Why Guanaja, Honduras is a Waterman’s Paradise

Islands contributor Hart Roberts is big on fishing. But after a stay at Fly Fish Guanaja, he couldn’t stop talking about the other offerings that make this private island a nature lover’s paradise. From snorkeling to surfing (oh, and the best sunset views), here’s why Guanaja is more than just a fishing destination.

Private Island

Privacy and comfort. That’s all I need to hear. A former vacation home, the Guanaja Fishing Lodge offers up just as much as a big-name resort, without the crowds and all the touches of home. (Well, if home had a private beach, four huge bedrooms and my own personal fishing deck.) Hart Roberts

Plenty of Fish

I’d heard that Guanaja is home to some of the best saltwater fishing in the world. Several catches of bonefish and tarpon later, I I had to agree. Hart Roberts

Under the Sea

With world-class fishing comes world-class diving. I traded the rod for a mask, and dove in. Untouched reefs, caves, shipwrecks in perfect visibility and warm water? Let’s just say the “fishing” is good in and out of the water. Hart Roberts

Just Keep Swimming

We didn’t have to dive to get a good view of the fish. Jones Cay showed off vibrant coral and beautiful reefs — just steps from my bedroom door. Hart Roberts

Raising the Bar

Surprisingly enough, fish isn’t always on the menu. The German-inspired Manati Bar, a local fave that serves up homemade pätzle, roasted pork, and chicken schnitzel, is the prime spot for mingling with ex-pats, world-traveling sailors, and friendly locals. German tunes on the breezy terrace go surprisingly well with Caribbean views. Hart Roberts

Surf’s Up

The ever-present wind and surf on Guanaja make for perfect kiteboarding conditions (and a great hangover cure from German beer). Beginner? The crew at the The Sweet Spot will get you on a board and flying-high in no time — and yes, the views of the island make the spills worth it. Hart Roberts

Take the Leap

But off the ocean, there’s still plenty of adventure (and relaxation) to be had. I explored the island cays by sea kayak, hiked to a local waterfall, took a walk through the restored mangroves, discovered uninhabited beaches and relaxed in hammocks on the front porch — all in just one day. Best Seat in the House

Ready for the best part? This was my view every night. In my hammock. On the deck of my private lodge. Fly Fish Guanaja made sure to place the porches just right for optimal sunset viewing. They truly thought of everything — and tomorrow I’ll get to experience it all again. Hart Roberts
