If the goal is to disappear in a tropical paradise loaded with natural beauty and spectacular amenities, Isla Palenque is the place to be. Isla Palenque

Afloat in Panama’s Gulf of Chiriqui is Isla Palenque, a 400-acre, all-inclusive private-island resort that promises visitors a back-to-nature break from everyday stress. Here are five reasons you should consider adding it to your list this winter.

It isn’t easy to get to

Isla Palenque is an unspoiled destination with marvelous natural beauty.
Not far from the Costa Rican border and just south of (and barely attached to) Boca Brava, Isla Palenque is a magical Pacific paradise. Isla Palenque

This sounds counterintuitive but bear with me. Because sometimes, when you really need to get away, a two-hour non-stop flight just isn’t enough distance from the real world to totally detach and relax.

From the U.S. East Coast, it takes a lot more effort to reach this vacation nirvana. Coming from Miami, I took a three-hour Copa Airlines flight into Panama City (where I chose to overnight, but you don’t have to) and then an hour-long flight to the city of David. From there it was another hour’s drive to Boca Chica, on the gulf of Chiriqui, where we boarded Isla Palenque’s launch for the 15-minute ride to the resort.

But trust me when I tell you that the moment I stepped onto the pier (where a retinue of the island’s staff were waiting to meet us); took in the sight of spindly palm trees sprouting from the black-sand beach; and then a hearty swig of a fruity welcome cocktail, the hours it took to get there were forgotten. Not only did I instantly feel as if I was a world away from the realities of my day-to-day, I took comfort in the fact that I really was!

You’ll have your own casita

Isla Palenque offers guests a private casita with decor and design inspired by the surrounding natural beauty.
The resort’s eight casitas were designed with the region’s tropical beauty in mind, as if they were pulled straight from some of literature’s greatest island tales, but they still offer modern creature comforts. Isla Palenque

Tucked into the tropical greenery that borders Isla Palenque’s beach are eight thatch-roofed, a-frame villas, each named for authors who wrote books about islands, and one of which you’ll call your own. Simply yet comfortably appointed (with low-slung wood furniture handmade on property) and blissfully air-conditioned, these are the digs Robinson Crusoe would have built if he had better tools and supplies.

For me, the highlight was the outdoor bathroom (bathing al fresco is my jam) with two showers; double sinks; and, in the garden, a cast-iron soaking tub. I’ve no problem with answering the call of nature in … well … nature. But if flashlight-lit nighttime bathroom runs aren’t your thing, better stop drinking early in the evening, because the toilet’s outside, too.

You’ll get a window on wildlife

The beaches of Isla Palenque in Panama are ideal for walking tours, as guests will likely spot local wildlife.
With guided tours of the beach, forests, and all around the island, visitors are sure to spot wildlife creeping spying right back. Isla Palenque

If, like me, your experience with wildlife is mostly limited to watching it on TV, you’re in for a treat. Secreted within Palenque’s tropical forest are all manner of animals and birds that screech and hoot in the night, and the waters surrounding the island teem with marine species. Catfish, snook, jack and roosterfish are plentiful, and you’re practically guaranteed to come back from a fishing trip with a decent haul.

From August through October, humpback whales and their calves can be spotted about a 30-minute boat ride from the resort, and guests with eagle eyes (and a good measure of luck) will see them breeching during private or group whale watching tours. (Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, too).

On land, armadillos, anteaters, and raccoons shuffle about in the undergrowth beyond the resort (which occupies only a tiny part of the island). And you can get up close and personal with them on (included) hikes led by Isla Palenque’s experience coordinator, José Chavarria. But it was the howler monkeys that caught my attention quickest.

You hear them most in the early morning and evening, barking loudly and insistently like disgruntled dogs on your doorstep, although they may be as far as three miles away. The primates sound huge but, if you manage to see one, you realize that they’re actually quite small—about the size of cat—with big personalities and even bigger vocal cords. Brings earplugs or prepare to wake up early!

The food is superb

Isla Palenque's chefs create authentic, fresh Panamanian cuisine with modern twists.
At this resort, the culinary offerings are as creative as they are delicious, and most of the ingredients are locally sourced. Isla Palenque

I expected fresh fruit and fish, of course. But on an island this isolated from the mainland, I certainly didn’t expect the variety I enjoyed on my four-day trip. The island’s chefs—all local talents—wowed us with Panamanian dishes that were inventively prepared and beautifully presented, taking advantage of the bounty from the resort’s own kitchen garden and micro farm.

From “Palenque Benedict” (poached eggs with homemade jerky and sofrito hollandaise on tortillas) to chilled beetroot soup with yogurt foam and orange zest to seafood rice with sofrito, cream and gouda cheese, every meal was a delight. Gluten-free and vegetarian options were plentiful and desserts irresistible. I devoured my weight in soursop sorbet and don’t feel even a tiny bit guilty.

Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword

Isla Palenque in Panama is devoted to sustainability and keeping the natural elements protected.
Isla Palenque is a celebration of natural beauty and the things that make Panama, in general, so unique and special. Isla Palenque

At Isla Palenque, they walk the talk when it comes to sustainability, and the resort is remarkably self-sufficient. On the culinary front, 95 percent of the F&B is either farmed on grown on property (tours of the garden are welcome), the only exceptions being olive oil, wine, and scotch. Toiletries are locally made, and straws are fashioned from the hollow stems of papaya plants, also grown at the resort.

The staff of 40 people is 99 percent Panamanian, many of them from the local area. And the roster of included activities—from jewelry making to rum tasting and Panamanian cooking to guided hikes that reveal relics from more than 2,000 years ago-–acknowledge and celebrate the country’s unique culture and traditions.

The result: A vacation at Isla Palenque is one you can feel good about, because while you’re enjoying your stay, the community is reaping tangible benefits from it, too.

margaritaville belize
The actual property will soon be populated by very relaxed and entertained guests. Margaritaville Beach Resort Ambergris Caye

There’s nothing quite like visiting a new resort with a can’t-miss deal, and travelers can now enjoy just that with the upcoming opening of Margaritaville Beach Resort Ambergris Caye in Belize. Not only will this boutique property showcase the best of this spectacular, emerging destination, but with booking now available, eventual guests can celebrate discounts of up to 25 percent ahead of the doors opening in early 2023.

But it’s what they’ll find when the red carpet rolls out that will really have travelers over the moon. This 55-suite property will boast all the frills and charm that Parrotheads and everyone else have come to expect from the Margaritaville brand, but not many hotels in this portfolio can offer this kind of setting. The nearby barrier reef is the second-largest living coral reef in the world, which means phenomenal snorkeling and diving opportunities, but even plain, old beach bums will fall head over flip-flopped heel for this resort’s stunning stretch of sand and two lagoon swimming pools.

With four types of suites, this Margaritaville property should please groups of all sizes, from sun-soaked retirees to small families looking to celebrate big occasions. The Paradise Master Bedroom and Ambar One Bedroom Suites can sleep as many as three adults or two adults and two kids, while the larger Ambergris Coast Two-Bedroom Suites are ideal for up to five adults or any combo of six adults and kids, which means this place has “family spring break getaway” written all over it.

The crown jewel of accommodations is the Island Breeze Two Bedroom Penthouse Suite, which boasts oceanfront views and approximately 3,659 sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor space for families to kick back and truly enjoy the vacation vibes. A complete kitchen is included for private meals, and the wraparound terrace will provide the most memorable moments as guests bask together in the magnificent views.

Riddles is in the Sand is the lone restaurant here, but the fresh local cuisine promises to fully appease guests. However, there’s also conceptual culinary creativity on display here with the Sun Baked BBQ picnic area located in the heart of the property. Guests can host their own grilling events or attend biweekly food events, including bonfires. And everyone will appreciate being able to escape to The Sandbar and the aptly named The Boat Drinks for expectedly delicious tropical cocktails.

5 Tropical Resorts that are Perfect for a Quick Golf Getaway https://www.islands.com/story/resorts/tropical-resorts-perfect-for-quick-golf-getaway/ Tue, 20 Jul 2021 22:34:36 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=40794 Adding 18 holes to your vacation in paradise is always recommended. Especially if you’re visiting one of these destinations.

The Divi and Tamarjin Aruba Resort.
When the all-inclusive resort is renowned for spoiling guests, you shouldn’t be surprised that the course is a hidden delight. Divi and Tamarijn Aruba All Inclusives

There’s nothing quite like a round of golf on a Caribbean course. The clear skies, light breezes, and warm sun always make for a perfect morning or afternoon of 18 or even nine holes, but the views really make the experience better than anything we’ll find back home. Listening to waves crash, deftly maneuvering between sun-bathing lizards, grabbing quick selfies on greens with breathtaking views—these are the perks offered on golf courses in paradise.

Of course, amazing golf courses aren’t just a Caribbean thing. If you’re looking to plan your next quick vacation around the links, we have some great Caribbean spots, sure, but we also have two others that are equally amazing. Now it’s just a matter of choosing.

Divi and Tamarijn Aruba All Inclusives

A lot of people say that Aruba isn’t a golf destination, but I strongly disagree. The island only has two golf courses, sure, but this is a place that is perfect for a three-day weekend, and the nine-hole The Links at Divi Aruba is the kind of course you can play and enjoy two or three times without missing out on everything else this wonderful island has to offer.

The Summer Golf Package currently being offered by Divi and Tamarijn Aruba All Inclusives is only available for booking through July 31, but it’s good for travel through October 31, which is great for those of us who cherish an endless summer season. Guests will enjoy 35 percent savings on rates plus a 15 percent discount on golf and club rentals, so there’s no need to lug those giant bags to the airport.

Best of all, a discount for lessons at the Feel Golf school is included. Here, you’ll meet Donald Ross, one of the best golf teachers I’ve ever met—he fixed my flaws in a matter of minutes and helped me fall in love with golf again—so don’t pass on the opportunity to meet this quirky Scottish swing doctor. Oh, and be mindful of the iguanas on the cart path.

The Buccaneer, St. Croix

Aerial view of The Buccaneer golf course.
Between its incredible views and generous fairways, this is a course any golfer can appreciate. The Buccaneer

Having recently had the immense pleasure of staying at The Buccaneer, St. Croix’s flagship resort, I was thrilled to experience so much of this under-the-radar USVI gem, but it was golf that sat at the top of my to-do list. I’d heard so many great things about this course, mostly that it’s wide open and designed to be very forgiving for those of us with the occasional monster slice. In fact, thanks to the broad fairways and my aforementioned Aruban lessons, I shot an 88 on my first round, so that should be all the convincing anyone needs.

What makes this Bob Joyce-designed course truly magical, though, is the layout. For starters, I was incredibly lucky no one was playing behind me as I stepped into the tee box on Hole 3, because the view here made my jaw drop. An 8-iron and short wedge shot later, I was on the green and once again captivated by the 360-degree spectacle before me. It’s so nice that golfers will have to be patient with the resort’s non-golfing guests who make the trek just for a selfie or two (I happily paused between holes to help a family with photos).

With 13 holes offering an ocean view, the toughest part isn’t the hike to your ball when you inevitably blast your drive a mile from the cart path. It’s fighting the urge to walk away from Hole 14 and find a spot on the sand just a few steps from the tee box.

Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort

Aerial view of the Ocean Course golf course at the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico resort.
The 16th hole on the Ocean Course is considered by many people to be one of the best and most beautiful in the entire Caribbean. Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort

Why settle for one course when you can stay at a resort that offers two world-class courses? Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort’s Inclusive Package includes a bevy of perks, including daily meals, beverages, and discounts, but if your clubs are your most important travel partner, then it’s the comped green fee (one round per room) that’ll put some extra pop in your drive. And the unlimited use of the driving range will at least help you get loose before you make the ultimate decision: “Which course will I play first?”

Designed by Tom and George Fazio, the Ocean Course is highlighted by the natural beauty of both the Atlantic Ocean and the El Yunque Mountains, but when it comes to signature holes that every golfer should dream of playing, you won’t find many better than the 16th, which is bordered by the gorgeous golden sand.

With its wide fairways, the River Course is beneficial for building confidence in golfers of all ages and skill levels. And while everyone knows that you never turn down the chance to play a Greg Norman course, this one really takes the cake (bizcocho mojadito, if you prefer). The Shark designed this one to highlight the majesty of the Mameyes River, so try not to be too distracted.

Haven Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa

The golf course at the Haven Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa
El Tinto was developed using Platinum Paspalum, AKA the “Cadillac of grass,” so remember to replace your divots. Haven Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa

We’re cheating a little here, because the celebrated El Tinto Golf Club isn’t actually part of Haven Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa, but it’s close enough and no one said we can’t appreciate a great golf deal. And when it comes to a Nice Price course, there’s no way a golfer of any experience level should miss a shot to play here. Certainly not if the green fees are included in the resort rates.

All guests will receive a free round, but those who stay in the Serenity Club Suites for at least three nights will enjoy complimentary golf cart use as well, but why stop there? And why stay for only three days? Anyone booking four to seven nights will get to play two rounds, in addition to some other perks, so it shouldn’t take “Fluff” Cowan to know this is the right play.

As for the course, Price designed El Tinto to be challenging enough for the best golfers among us, but also fun for those of us who don’t mind losing a few sleeves in the five lakes.

Santa Maria Hotel and Golf Resort

The Santa Maria Hotel golf course.
We love beaches and forests, but there’s nothing wrong with a spectacular urban setting, too. Santa Maria Hotel and Golf Resort

Even if you’re a casual golfer with a handicap as high as the afternoon temperature, you should never pass on the chance to play on vacation—even if for the Instagram clout. The most average courses in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America are still better than the cookie cutter links you play back home, so imagine what it’s like to play the amazing Santa Maria Golf and Country Club at The Santa Maria Hotel and Golf Resort in Panama City.

If Panama isn’t already on your travel wish list, it needs to be—mainly because of this celebrated resort that offers access to the best of this bustling destination. Looking for luxury? It’s here. Romance? Oh yeah. Incredible food? Bring an appetite. But this is all about golf, and this course is as beautiful as it gets. The Stay and Play experience includes accommodations and daily breakfast, as well as one round per night, so if your hands blister easily be sure to bring enough tape for at least 54 holes.

A beautiful beach in Placenia, Belize
Placencia is already one of Belize’s most popular destinations, so how do you make it even better? A private island getaway, of course. Shutterstock

Having an entire private island to yourself—or at least you and your family or a close group of friends—has never been more appealing than right now. And if in the Before Times (before “bubbles” and “pods” were part of our social lexicon) you thought that renting a private island was vastly beyond your budget, think again.

These 10 private islands available for rent on AirBnb are located in destinations currently welcoming Americans (a few are even in the U.S.) and most are bookable for less than $100 per person per night.

The Overwater Bungalow Experience

The Place: Urraca Private Island Eco-Lodge, Panama

Not only is this smoke-free, adults-only eco-lodge located on its own private island in the Bocas del Toro archipelago off of Panama’s Caribbean coast, but you’ll stay in six vibrant over-the-water bungalows set on stilts above the mangrove-lined lagoon and coral reef—and you’ll be sharing your getaway with 12 rescued monkeys.

Urraca can accommodate 16 guests (up to 24 with a total island takeover) and features 4.5 shared bathrooms with hot water, an on-island restaurant (breakfast is included), free Wi-Fi and overwater swings and hammocks for total back-to-nature relaxation. Superhost Francine can also arrange organized adventures.

Rates from $1,310 per night for 16 people and there’s no minimum-stay requirement.

For the Small Group Getaway

The Place: Bird Island, Belize

Nature is center stage at this unique and colorful retreat located inside a coral atoll about six miles from Placencia, Belize, where you and your family or friends can enjoy total privacy in four bedrooms (set in separate buildings) accommodating up to eight guests—plus an over-the-water bar area with panoramic ocean views.

Bird Island is entirely self-catering, but superhost Fred will arrange for your pick-up upon arrival, with a stop at the grocery store to stock up on supplies. Fred also has a tour company and offers private excursions on the Monkey River as well as snorkeling and fishing trips.

Rates from $695 night, with a four-night minimum stay.

Get Lost without Going Far

The Place: Private Islands of Old House Cay, Hilton Head Island, SC

If going off-the-grid—without sacrificing modern comforts such as air conditioning and a washer/dryer—is your style, this series of three private islands located 10 minutes by boat from Hilton Head Island offers a laid-back Low Country escape for up to six guests.

The solar-powered house was built in 2010 and features three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, making it ideal for a family or a small group of friends. No pets or smoking are allowed, but superhosts Sarah and Bill have created a peaceful retreat ideal for kayaking, fishing and observing nature (bald eagles, dolphins and more).

Rates from $567 per night, with a two-night minimum stay.

Romance is in the Air

The Place: Hideaway Caye, Placencia, Belize

The name just about says it all: This secluded island, set on a pristine reef off Belize’s coast between Hopkins and Placencia, is designed for couples seeking an adventure. There’s a treehouse-like cabana, built amid 500 feet of boardwalks and mangroves, featuring just one bedroom, one bathroom and a veranda with a welcoming hammock.

But there’s also a restaurant, bar and staff to prepare the three authentically Belizean (fresh seafood caught every day) meals included with every stay. Superhost Kim has also provided guests with access to kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel gear, but the island is smoke-free, pet-free and there’s no TV, Wi-Fi or air conditioning.

Rates from $365 per night, with a two-night minimum stay.

For the Bigger Moments

The Place: McGee Island, St. George, Maine

For Maine cabin coziness on a grander scale, this 110-acre private island retreat located three miles off the coast combines seclusion with togetherness for a large family or group of friends. The property, which host Elizabeth’s family has been enjoying for years, features two buildings with 11 bedrooms (sleeping up to 16 guests) and 6.5 bathrooms.

Quintessential coastal activities, such as kayaking, canoeing, fishing and hiking, pair with vintage Maine charm—most of the furnishings are antiques and the main house, built in 1915, has a huge wraparound porch—to create a nostalgic ambience, while a modern kitchen and Wi-Fi (but no TVs) are welcome 21st century touches.

Rates from $550 per night (for up to 12 people), with a seven-night minimum stay.

Talk about Cultural Immersion

The Place: Private Island Paradise, Ilha Grande, Brazil

This rustic-chic property, owned by an Italian designer and surrounded by nature, is located two hours away from Rio de Janeiro. It features two houses, situated on opposite sides of a foot bridge that links the island to Ilha Grande, which accommodate up to 14 guests in six bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom.

Three decks offer plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the Brazilian sun, reading (or snoozing) in a hammock and enjoying caipirinha cocktails. Superhost Francesca can also arrange for a private chef to whip up meals prepared using fresh local ingredients and enjoyed al fresco with views of the aqua-blue sea.

Rates from $600 per night, with a two-night minimum stay.

That Classic Keys Vibe

The Place: Seabird Key, Marathon, FL

Tropical luxury meets local craftsmanship—the Old Florida Keys-style residence is constructed entirely of cypress—in this private island retreat located off Marathon Key. The distinctive home, which features four bedrooms (sleeping up to eight guests) and three bathrooms, is set amid coconut palms and host Deborah provides a 19-foot Boston Whaler for exploration and watersports.

Seabird Key has its own private beach with white sand, calm water, hammocks, paddle boards and kayaks, and a gazebo-like outdoor kitchen.

Rates from $1,350 per night, on a seven-night Saturday-to-Saturday basis only.

Time to Completely Disconnect

The Place: Charming Caribbean Private Island, Islas del Rosario, Colombia

The warm, inviting, turquoise Caribbean surrounds this private island in Colombia’s Islas del Rosario, located about 40 minutes by boat from Cartagena. The airy beach house, which has three bedrooms (with seven beds) and 4.5 bathrooms, sleeps up to 11 guests and features clean modern lines with decks, hammocks and Balinese-style daybeds for lounging.

There’s a private beach on a scenic cove and a cook/housekeeper to prepare meals of local seafood, but no TV, air conditioning or cellular service/internet.

Rates from $393 per night (for two guests), with a two-night minimum stay.

Host Your Own Water Olympics

The Place: Fort Morgan Cay: All-Inclusive Private Island, Honduras

Perfect for families or friends who love to snorkel, fish, or simply laze the day away, eco-friendly, 40-acre Fort Morgan Cay, located in the Caribbean near the Honduran island of Roatan, can accommodate 8-20 guests in seven bedrooms (with seven bathrooms).

Nightly rates include all meals, prepared with local ingredients and served family style, while complimentary activities provided by superhost Mark include sailing, snorkeling, paddle boarding, yoga and volleyball.

Rates from $274 per person per night, with a three-night minimum stay.

When Unwinding is the Only Goal

The Place: La Isla Zacatalosa, Granada, Nicaragua

Tropical greenery, a view of Nicaragua’s Mombacho Volcano and the colonial city of Granada—which is just a 10-minute boat ride and 1.5-mile drive away—and the sounds of chirping birds and howling monkeys make this eclectic villa on La Isla Zacatalosa in Lago Cocibolca (aka Lake Nicaragua) a peaceful yet accessible setting.

There are three bedrooms (sleeping six guests) and three bathrooms, plus a pool and tennis courts, and host Nelson, who has owned the property for more than 30 years, or the villa’s caretaker can suggest other activities and excursions.

Rates from $180 per night, with a minimum two-night stay.

Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa—St. Barts

Amazing view from the Océan Lux Piscine Privée room
The Océan Lux Piscine Privée room includes a private patio with heated plunge pool. Laurent Benoit

For a sophisticated romantic getaway, head to Le Barthélemy Hotel & Spa tucked along the northeastern shore of St. Bart’s. Newly built in 2016 (and repaired in 2018 after hurricane damage), this property perches right on the beach, offering magnificent views of the Caribbean Sea. Spacious rooms and suites boast a neutral décor with pops of colorful hues, all featuring either a garden, lake, or ocean view. Ask for a unit with its own private plunge pool for a steamy swim.

When you’re surrounded by spectacular turquoise waters, you’ll want to spend the day kayaking, kitesurfing, snorkeling, or swimming. After you’ve worked up an appetite, dine al fresco at Aux Amis and Aux Amis Plage as you indulge in sumptuous French-Caribbean cuisine. Then head for a nightcap at the rooftop bar featuring live music on weekend evenings.

Hotel Riu Palace—Aruba

If you crave the no-fuss nature of all-inclusive hotels, consider the Hotel Riu Palace located on Aruba’s main strip, Palm Beach. Splurge for a spacious Jacuzzi Suites with a king size bed, a feels-like-home lounge area, and a jacuzzi on the terrace. If you’re a couple of planners, you can pack your days with scheduled entertainment, shows, and live music. Or grab a workout together at the gym, try paddle surfing, play one-on-one beach volleyball, go diving, or hop in a kayak and explore the area.

Ready to unwind? Book an aromatherapy massage and a rejuvenating treatment (like a facial or body wrap) at Vita Novus Spa, then linger in a whirlpool bath or sauna to end with totally relaxation.

With five restaurants onsite, you’ll find something to please both of your palates, from Italian creations to Japanese specialties to select cuts from the steakhouse. Pop in the hotel bars (or the swim-up pool bar) for a tropical drink, grab a pastry at the patisserie, or cool off with a cone at the ice-cream parlor.

Casa Kimberly—Mexico

Enchanting pool at the Casa Kimberly
With only nine suites, this elegant, timeless hotel is bound to make any couple feel like A-listers. Casa Kimberly

Situated on the Bay of Banderas in Puerto Vallarta, the trendy-and-intimate Casa Kimberly looks out over the horseshoe-shaped shoreline stretching along the Pacific Ocean. Originally home to the famous lovers of the 1960s—Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton—the property is unofficially dubbed “the legendary love nest.” Here, you can expect romantic bliss (such as a soak in the pink marble heart-shaped tub) during your stay at this lavish romantic getaway. (Trivia buffs: All suites are named after Taylor’s films, such as the Cleopatra and Velvet.)

This nine-suite hotel delivers an indulgent level of privacy, with spacious rooms, top-notch service, and amorous touches. Book a couple’s massage or a private Jacuzzi soak in the spacious treatment suites designed for a romantic experience. Enjoy dinner for two on a private terrace or at the open-air restaurant and tequila bar, The Iguana, which overlooks Banderas Bay and the city of Puerto Vallarta.

Looking for a tropical romantic getaway without leaving the states? Consider a trip to Hawk’s Cay Resort or Barbary Beach House Key West—just two of the amazing Florida Keys hot spots that serve up the perfect stateside romantic getaway.

The Santa Maria Hotel & Golf Resort is the first Marriot Bonvoy Luxury Collection property in Central America. Marriot Bonvoy Luxury Collection

Not far from Panama’s airport and its cosmopolitan urban core is The Santa Maria Hotel & Golf Resort, perfectly placed to allow you a lush home away from home within easy proximity to top tourist sites and the shimmering Pacific Ocean. Once at Central America’s only Marriot Bonvoy Luxury Collection property, you’ll be warmly greeted like an old friend. Fidel Reyes, General Manager of the country’s newest resort, can often be spotted mingling with guests, embodying the hotel’s passion for superior hospitality, which is essentially authentic friendliness. Take a minute to chat with him, and you’ll see what I mean.

Stroll into the Lobby Bar toward the wall of massive glass doors and you’ll glimpse dreamy pool waters and beyond that, the elegant greens of the city’s only Championship Nicklaus Design golf course. The 18-hole, 72-par course has hosted its share of events and in 2020 will welcome the US Open Kids Golf Tournament. Personally, the pool was whispering my name upon arrival, especially as I could spot servers from the poolside restaurant AQVA carrying cocktails to lounging guests.

Thoughtful expressions of Panama’s history and cultural heritage are woven into the resort’s design and offerings. Even the resort’s decision to make the Holy Spirit Orchid, the country’s national flower, its logo artfully furthers Panama’s story. In the lobby, run your hand over the statuesque dark wooden columns, mined from the construction of the historic canal from the depths of Gatun Lake. When you enter your room, note the colorful blanket at the end of your bed, a traditional “Mola” of the Guna Yala indigenous people. Every one of the guestrooms and suites includes handmade artifacts crafted by one of Panama’s indigenous groups.

Like yours will, my room offered all the perks of modernity without compromising on the cozy. Each night, I anticipated returning to my dreamy room and when morning arrived, I wasn’t yearning to leave. You’ll likely want to linger and rest on your chaise lounge, warmed by the plush resort robe and slippers while sipping a beverage from Coffee Hat in the privacy of your chambers before launching into another day in this tropical paradise.

Savor your view of the pristine golf course with the ocean glimmering in the distance, or the dramatic city skyline boasting over 60 skyscrapers, making Panama City one of the world’s skyscraper cities.

Guests wishing to learn more about Panama will appreciate the off-site private complimentary tour to learn about efforts to preserve local culture and artifacts. The resort concierge team can also arrange a visit to Panama’s iconic sites, such as the charming colonial old city Casco Viejo—where you must stop for an Indiana Jones cocktail at the sumptuous Salvaje Restaurant. Hop on a boat for monkey-spotting in the rainforest, learn about the Emberá people and revel in the engineering feat of the Panama Canal.

Because of its diverse population—indigenous, African, European, Asian—Panama’s food scene is exciting. Known as the Crossroads of the World due to its unique geographic position, Panama is a narrow isthmus connecting Central America to South America, as well as the Pacific to the Caribbean Oceans thanks to the 50-mile long canal, making the region a wonderfully stimulating melting pot.

Correspondingly, the food scene mirrors the mash-up of nationalities, especially thriving in Panama City, Central America’s largest city. I tasted some of the best ceviche, paella and cuatro leches cake during my visit.

The Mestizo Restaurant pairs fine regional cuisine with stimulating views of the property’s best aspects. Marriot Bonvoy Luxury Collection

The culinary scene at The Santa Maria provides cultural-slant offerings and then some. Daily at 4p, guests can sip a complimentary Panamanian Chichita. The traditional cocktail combines Seco Herrerano, a local spirit made from sugarcane, with pineapple and grapefruit juice.

Executive Chef Dani Osorio serves a cultural meal weekly at The Mestizo Restaurant. It’ll be like Panamanian Cuisine 101, allowing you to interact with Osorio, who will discuss the menu, local ingredients and field questions. Fans of al fresco dining will be glad that the restaurant also offers terrace seating, with a view of the pool and palm trees, where you can enjoy breakfast and later, happy hour.

I experienced fine dining at its best the eve of my departure at The Grill House FSH & STK. Located in the stately clubhouse with superb views over the iconic 9th hole, the establishment is popular with guests as well as the who’s who of Panama.

With a menu inspired by the famed Sous Chef Julio Artigas, the restaurant serves fresh local seafood and top cuts of steak. Artigas creatively incorporates Panamanian flavors to craft unique dishes. Share the Lobster-stuffed Avocado and Crab Croquettes as starters before your tomahawk steak—or in my case, shrimp risotto—arrives.

Marriot Bonvoy Luxury Collection
Go from playing the course to enjoying it as a serene background for your spa treatment. Marriot Bonvoy Luxury Collection

Just entering The Spa will make the stress fall away. The air hints of soothing essential oils such as lavender, guaranteed to make your shoulders relax. The stylish facility goes above and beyond, such as an expansive shower-for-two in the couple’s treatment cabin and a full-service beauty salon for that pre-dinner emergency blow-out. The sauna and steam room facilities are complimentary to guests, regardless of a spa booking. After your workout, for example, you can feel free to step into the steam room.

The Spa offerings come with a seductive Panamanian twist. I’d argue their most alluring service is the Cacao & Coffee Santa Maria, which mixes local coffee with a cacao spa service, a truly unique cultural experience. The 90-minute treatment starts with a full-body coconut oil massage and coffee exfoliation, then wraps you in a soothing organic cocoa mask.

Afterwards you’ll be welcomed at The Coffee Shop for a coffee tasting. The coffee sommelier will educate you on Panama’s renown coffee, most notably Geisha, the priciest coffee in the world which hails from the country’s coffee region of Boquete.

Marriot Bonvoy Luxury Collection
While enjoying your daily cup of coffee, take the time to learn what makes it so delicious. Marriot Bonvoy Luxury Collection

Eco-tourists will appreciate that coffee grounds are composted and used for landscaping the golf course and fertilizing the resort grounds. Another demonstration of the commitment to operate responsibly is the resort’s pledge to limit the use of plastic bottles, opting instead for water stations and glassware. Plastic straws have been replaced with paper.

The Santa Maria also donates house-slippers and toiletries to the local oncology hospital. Leftover food is shuttled to women’s shelters and area hospitals when logistically possible, yet another example of efforts to better the local community, country and environment.

Learning of these behind-the-scenes initiatives raised the resort’s stock even higher in my mind, enabling me to relax 100 percent and freely indulge.

Buenaventura Golf & Beach Resort Panama
Located near Playa Blanca and El Faro beach, Buenaventura Golf & Beach Resort Panama is a stylish, amenity-packed property for travelers of all ages. Marriott Autograph Collection

Arriving at the newly renovated Marriott Autograph Collection’s Buenaventura Golf & Beach Resort Panama promises to be dramatic after the 2.5-hour journey from Panama City. The drive out of the city creates natural suspense about this off-the-grid luxury resort in the Riviera Pacifica area so that you’ll feel you’ve been admitted to an exclusive paradise when you enter the resort. Alighting from your car, you’ll be enveloped by a brick-lined cavernous portico, with ocean air gently blowing through palm trees.

The resort is Spanish-colonial designed with an open tiled courtyard concept, which allows the delightful songs of many of Panama’s 400 bird species to waft through the air along with free-flowing cross breezes from the nearby Pacific Ocean. Panamanian artifacts are deftly incorporated into the lobby’s décor strategy, providing colorful accents. Altogether, I felt every sense stirred, as if preparing me for a time of rejuvenation.

Due to ongoing expansion activity at the resort, the option of arriving by boat will be possible in 2020, thanks to the Buenaventura Marina. Boat service from Panama City will be appealing because it’ll relieve weary travelers of facing possible congested roads in reaching Buenaventura. Additionally, traveling by boat will offer enviable views, allowing a deeper appreciation of the country.

El Faro
Panama may not be surrounded by water, but it is still home to some amazing beaches, including El Faro Marriott Autograph Collection

Though Panama isn’t an island, as Costa Rica lies west and Colombia to its east, the narrow isthmus is comprised of 1,786 miles of shoreline and considered part of the Caribbean, bordered by the Pacific as well as Caribbean oceans. Enjoying a water commute to the resort will provide a window into the seemingly endless shoreline as well as distant glimpses of some of the country’s 1,500 islands scattered about. The newly constructed marina will also allow guests to rent boats and take part in chartered fishing excursions and sunset tours.

Opening the doors to my private balcony, I glimpsed the Pacific Ocean and heard the bubbly ubiquitous fountains spilling and splashing about below. Of the colonial-designed 114 guestrooms and four villas, you’ll not have a bad view since all thoughtfully provide either a pool, ocean or garden view. An example of the resort’s guest-first mentality is that though the entrance and bath are tiled, the remainder of the suite flooring is wood, making it less chilly when you step out of bed in the morning.

The colossal 100-year old Corotú tree, one of the resort’s not-to-miss Instagrammable landmarks, was carefully considered in the resort’s design. Sitting in its own grassy space with shops, restaurants and outdoor seating surrounding it, the revered tree sees lots of happy action. It serves as the choice spot for wedding receptions as well as the ideal camp site for kids, an experience offered through the complimentary Kids Club, whereby kids sleep outdoors in tents pitched under the expansive protection of the tree.

Corotú tree
The 100-year old Corotú tree is basically a celebrity. Marriott Autograph Collection

Camping is just one of many of the rotating Kids Club activities. Other examples of the truly unique activities include mother-daughter yoga classes, cupcake decorating class, snorkeling and fish-feeding at the fishpond. Should parents wish to shimmy late into the night to Latin American tunes at the nightclub Menao, babysitting can be arranged.

Many activities cater separately to kids and adults, but in the spirit of togetherness many are suitable for every age group. For example, the cultural workshop at the Mua Mua Museum, led by a member of one of Panama’s indigenous groups, helps you create locally inspired art, such as a Kuna bracelet. To connect guests with the community, Buenaventura promotes various day-long volunteer projects. Guests can contribute to help build libraries, schools and aqueducts for the resort’s province of Coclé, an impactful way to enrich your vacation.

Chocolate, anyone? Panama’s chocolate fame is rising and you can be a part of it at the resort, which recently unveiled the CACAO Experimental Bar in collaboration with Casa Bocao’. The unique experience guides guests through the chocolate-making process, beginning with Panamanian cacao from the famed region of Bocas del Toro. The quality of your own handcrafted chocolate bar, made from the purest of ingredients, will be the best you’ve ever had.

And though my mind was on eating the finished product, the presentation was interactive and captivating, an unforgettable way for anyone (six years and up) to learn about chocolate-making and Panamanian cacao. The Corotú Spa furthers the Panamanian cacao story by inviting you to indulge in their locally sourced, organic treatments which include a cacao service.

Panamanian sunset
There are worse ways to watch a Panamanian sunset than sipping a cocktail by the resort’s lagoon. Marriott Autograph Collection

Good news: the chocolate theme continues at the Palapa Bar perched on the lagoon where legendary mixologist Miguel Diaz will regale you with a chocolate cocktail experience, culminating in the Caribbean Delirium which fuses chocolate and passionfruit. And Diaz is hugely effervescent and entertaining. You’ll want to spend as much time as possible lounging in the Palapa Bar, sipping his handcrafted creations.

Get into nature by visiting the newly opened Wildlife Center, which showcases animals of Panama such as monkeys, parrots and peacocks. You can also purchase food to feed select animals. If you have birders in your group, head to a nearby facility for serious bird watching.

There’s no better way to explore the 400-acre resort than on cruiser bikes. Follow the trail that winds through the scenic property and get some exercise as well. If you’re keen on team sports, there’s pickup soccer or beach volleyball; for those exercise buffs wanting more, consult the rich array of sports/fitness programming available through the Sports Club.

Jack Nicklaus course in Panama
Any Jack Nicklaus course is a must-play. Being located in Panama is just an added bonus. Marriott Autograph Collection

Golfers will fulfill a dream by golfing at The Buenaventura Golf Course, awarded the best course in Panama by the World Golf Awards. This course has hosted prestigious tournaments, including the Latin American PGA Tour. Take your turn on the Troon-managed 18-hole Nicklaus-design 72-par course but be prepared for a challenge—there are 300 Corotú trees and 100+ water bunkers sprinkled about.

Of course, the gorgeous water will be central to your visit, how could it not? You’ll be helplessly drawn to the swimming pools, seven in all. Charming bridges connecting different pool areas make for a bewitching setting. I honestly didn’t want to leave my stately poolside cabana, except to cool off with a margarita at the swim-up bar. The pristine, uncommercial two-mile beachfront is the picture of serenity, so unspoiled—and complimentary kayaks and paddleboards are available to get out on the water.

Panama pool
The pools make it difficult to even think about visiting the beach… but you will. Marriott Autograph Collection

With nine restaurants, you can’t really go wrong. I loved the entertaining meal we had at the Japanese restaurant Tai Kai Sushi & Martini, which features the teppanyaki style of cooking where the chef prepares fresh food in front of guests on an enormous grill. Another unforgettable evening was spent at the poolside El Faro Beach Club’s Asa’o & Pesca’o Restaurant where I dined on Grilled Tuna with Maracuya Sause. The water shimmered under the moonlight creating an overall enchanting experience.

For the days you’re 100 percent beach or poolside, stroll over to El Faro for casual fare such as pizza, roasted vegetable salad and grilled shrimp. Or have it brought to your lounge chair, your choice.

Before you retire to your private kingdom for the night, aka your guestroom, visit Palapa Bar and ask Diaz for his Coclé Tropical Mojito. It may change your life, if Buenaventura hasn’t already.

Though often celebrated for remarkable biodiversity both on land and in the water, Panama and Costa Rica rarely get tapped as prime snorkeling territories, but these Central American eco-tourism hubs shouldn’t be overlooked when it comes to subaquatic exploration. Extensive reef systems line the Pacific and Caribbean coastlines of both countries, where coral colonies and rocky, volcanic outcroppings undulate with marine life.

Christian Mata, expedition leader and local expert aboard UnCruise Adventures’ Safari Voyager, shares eight snorkeling spots where the underwater world shines.

The Pearl Islands, Panama

Island-hop through paradise in the Las Perlas archipelago, a chain of more than 250 mostly uninhabited islands in the Gulf of Panama. Located about 30 miles from the mainland, Isla Contadora serves as the jumping off point for snorkeling the idyllic castaway cays on nearby Chapera, Boyarena and Mogo Mogo. June through October brings migrating humpbacks to the area, making the Pearl Islands some of the best locations for snorkeling in Panama.

Isla Iguana, Panama

Isla Iguana, Panama

Hire a panga (boat) from Playa Arenal in the sport fishing hub of Pedasi and motor just a few miles offshore to tiny Isla Iguana. A protected wildlife refuge, the island offers a safe haven for Panama’s largest colony of magnificent frigatebirds, as well as brown-footed boobies, black and green iguanas and hoards of hermit crabs. A short swim from the white-sand beach leads to a sprawling reef, where more than 350 species of fish make their home among 17 different varieties of colorful coral.

Coiba National Park, Panama

Coiba National Park, Panama

A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005, the 38 untouched islands that comprise Coiba National Park harbor the second largest coral reef in the eastern Pacific, making it a vital marine conservation area. Hop aboard a boat in the nearby surfing town of Santa Catalina for a 90-minute jaunt to dreamy locales like Granita de Oro, Rancheria and Isla Afuera, to snorkel with an array of tropical fish as well as sea turtles, rays, and white-tipped reef sharks.

Guna Yala, Panama

The San Blas archipelago, a collection of 365 coral atolls off Panama’s Caribbean coast, invites a true escape from reality. Take a two-hour boat trip from Panama City to reach these islands, an indigenous territory that falls fully under the control of the native Guna Indians. Isla Perro (Dog Island) remains a popular destination for day-trippers, but lesser known snorkeling spots and sublime beaches can be found on Isla Aguja, Isla Diablo, and the Cayos Holandeses (Dutch Cays).

Bocas del Toro, Panama

Nine inhabited islands accompanied by about 300 tiny, deserted islets make up the Bocas del Toro archipelago, known for its perfectly clear Caribbean water and vibrant coral reef. Set up shop in Bocas Town on Isla Colon, the area’s bustling tourist hub, where you can swim among the sea stars at Playa Estrellas or set out by boat to the remote reefs and sugar sand beaches of Coral Cay and Cayos Zapatilla, unspoiled snippets of paradise within the Bastimentos National Marine Park.

Cahuito and Manzanillo, Costa Rica

Cahuito and Manzanillo, Costa Rica

Discover Costa Rica’s only surviving Caribbean corals in Cahuita National Park, where a rich marine ecosystem flourishes within 787-acres of protected reef. Book a tour with a local guide and head to Punta Cahuita to swim in a real-life aquarium surrounded by vibrant, coral polychrome. Less than an hour south in Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, follow the shoreline trail toward Punta Mona through the rainforest and snorkel numerous hidden coves along the way. It’s no wonder why this place makes our list of the best snorkeling spots in Costa Rica.

Ballena Island Marine Park, Costa Rica

Lush jungle edged by rocky shoreline and golden beaches make up Ballena Island Marine Park, which protects one of the largest collections of coral in Costa Rica. Slip below the Pacific’s surface and paddle through extensive reef surrounding Ballena Island, the Tres Hermanas islets, and fascinating Punta Uvita — an odd quirk of nature, the entire point unfurls to resemble a whale’s tail. Afterward, head north and kick back on mostly deserted beaches like Playa Dominicalito and Playa Matapalo.

Tortuga Island, Costa Rica

Search the translucent Pacific for dolphins, humpback whales, and sea turtles en route to Tortuga Island, Costa Rica’s answer to a tropical paradise. After a short jaunt by boat from the Curu Wildlife Refuge, a veritable octopus’ garden awaits, especially in the rocky reef around the smaller Motero islands, often considered to offer some of the best snorkeling on the eastern Nicoya Peninsula.

7 Hurricane-Free (and Low-Risk) Caribbean Islands https://www.islands.com/7-hurricane-free-caribbean-islands/ Mon, 02 Oct 2017 22:50:36 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=41436 Yes, you can (and should) visit the Caribbean during hurricane season.

The post 7 Hurricane-Free (and Low-Risk) Caribbean Islands appeared first on Islands.

]]>
Here are seven islands that are historically hurricane-free or have a low risk of a direct hit.

The devastation of September 2017’s back-to-back Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria on some of the Caribbean’s most popular islands — the U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and St. Martin/St. Maarten among them — is a reminder that vacationing in the region in late summer and early fall is not without its risks. Luckily, many of the islands hit last year are well on the road to recovery and open for business. In addition, forecasters recently lowered predictions for the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which began June 1 and ends November 30, to below average with expectations of four hurricanes, only one of them major.

That means there’s still a risk — there always is, especially during the peak period from late August to mid-October — but if you’re eager to relax on a beach without worrying that your vacation could be ruined by a tropical storm-turned-hurricane churning toward your Caribbean paradise of choice, here are seven islands that are historically hurricane-free or have a low risk of a direct hit.

HISTORICALLY HURRICANE-FREE

Hurricane-free Caribbean Islands: Aruba

Aruba

Aruba Shutterstock

Aruba lies on the southern fringes of the hurricane belt, and locals likes to boast that only six hurricanes have passed within 62 miles of this Dutch island over the past 140 years (the last two were Janet in 1955 and Ivan in 2004, while the tail of Matthew whipped the island’s beaches in 2016). That means with no direct hits the odds are in your favor that you can head worry-free to this welcoming island with its popular Palm Beach and Eagle Beach resort areas, casinos and watersports.

Hurricane-free Caribbean Islands: Bonaire

Bonaire

Bonaire Shutterstock

Like Aruba, this neighboring ABC Island lies on the outer edge of the hurricane belt and has a history of avoiding major storms. Yet, there have been a few close calls: 2008’s Omar got near enough to destroy many of the island’s shallow coral reefs and 2016’s Matthew skirted the island and storm surge caused some beach erosion. But if you’re a diver, love arid landscapes or want to see pink flamingos, Bonaire is a pretty safe bet for a late summer or fall visit.

Hurricane-free Caribbean Islands: Curacao

Curacao

Curacao Shutterstock

The “C” of the ABC Islands has not generally been in the path of major hurricanes. That said, 2010’s Tomas weakened to tropical storm status as it approached this Dutch island, stalled and caused heavy flooding. A few years before that, Felix (2007) passed to the north and drenched Curacao and Omar (2008) formed nearby and also dumped heavy rain. But since a direct hit is rare, this island remains a good option if you want to experience the historic ambience of Willemstad and the beauty of its cave-lined coasts, secluded beaches and vivid blue water.

AT LOW-RISK FOR DIRECT HITS

Hurricane-free Caribbean Islands: Barbados

Barbados

Barbados Shutterstock

This Southern Caribbean island has generally avoided a direct hit over the past 100 years (Category-3 Allen in 1980 being the exception), although more than a half dozen storms have passed close enough to cause wind, rain and storm surge damage (notably Janet in 1955, Ivan in 2004 and Tomas in 2010). Given those odds, this upscale island, located where the Atlantic meets the Caribbean, is as low-risk as they come.

Hurricane-free Caribbean Islands: Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago Shutterstock

It has been 85 years since the last major hurricane (storms were unnamed back in 1933) hit Trinidad and 55 years since Flora made landfall on Tobago in 1963. Due to their location, these neighboring Southern Caribbean islands are at minimal risk of a direct hit relative to other islands — although 2017’s Tropical Storm Bret caused wind and flood damage on both. Sun-seekers love Tobago for its crowd-free white-sand beaches, while Trinidad offers a vibrant, multicultural vibe and takes pride in its steel-pan music.

Hurricane-free Caribbean Islands: Grenada

Grenada

Grenada Shutterstock

While Grenada lies in the Southern Caribbean and is generally at low-risk, 2004’s Ivan and 2005’s Emily, along with 1955’s Janet and 1963’s Flora, were the major exceptions. Category-4 Ivan stalled over this lush island for 15 long hours and devastated the agricultural and tourism businesses, and then Emily struck a year later. This tranquil island rebounded and has only had a few brushes with passing tropical storms in the years since. So if you love rum and nutmeg and want to mix beach relaxation with jungle adventure, head here.

Hurricane-free Caribbean Islands: Bocas del Toro, Panama

Bocas del Toro, Panama

Bocas del Toro, Panama Shutterstock

For a low-risk beach break during hurricane season, head farther south in the Caribbean to this up-and-coming Central American beach destination that has never suffered a direct hit (although Otto, which formed very late in the 2016 season, caused flooding and damage). I Bocas del Toro’s unspoiled beach-meets-jungle islands you can enjoy an eco-centric, off-the-grid escape.
