A golfer uses a putter with the RipIt Monsters Ink grip.
Golf doesn’t have to be boring, even when you’re covering your travel basics. RIPIT Grips

There is nothing quite like playing golf in paradise, but the journey and experience often come with some challenges. As I was marveling at the views from the Dye Fore courses during my recent trip to Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic, I was quietly annoyed that my poor reception was keeping me from being able to share my delight (and subtle boasting) with my Instagram followers in the moment.

Fortunately, I had my one of my all-time favorite golf gear gadgets, the Solis portable WiFi hotspot, in my golf bag, so I was able to fire that up and boost my signal for when it was time to kick back at Chilango Taqueria for a post-round mezcalita. Still, I wondered if there’s a better solution for bringing WiFi with me, and it turns out that Solis already has the answer.

Solis 5G Mobile WiFi Hotspot

The Solis 5G personal hotspot
Golf, exploring, lounging poolside—there are plenty of reasons to own a personal hotspot. Solis

It might be time to host a retirement ceremony for my old WiFi hotspot now that Solis has changed the game once more with the 5G Mobile WiFi Hotspot. While I’d have loved to head out to another Caribbean course to test this one, it arrived in time for Florida’s storm season, and my old house loses power and WiFi the moment a light breeze picks up. I figured there’s no better way to test a new hotspot than when Mother Nature does her thing.

With a new digital interface, activating and using the hotspot is easier than ever. In moments of desperation, using the app to operate the previous version could be complicated if my phone was getting no reception. However, the 5G model is as simple as turn on and connect to the best available signal—that is, once you’ve registered and subscribed to the best data plan for your needs.

That, of course, is the million-dollar question: how much do you need? And the answer relies on how much you plan to use it. The so-called digital nomads will likely want the biggest and best plan for setting up shop in those beautiful locations where there’s no connectivity so they can post the obligatory “my office for today” photos. But the occasional traveling golfer and anyone who wants a Plan B device for power outages will enjoy a basic plan. No matter the scenario, this 5G hotspot is bound to become every traveler’s new best friend.

Blue Tees Golf Player Pack

The Blue Tees Golf Player Pack
This might be the best and easiest way to help a beginner power up. Blue Tees Golf

Now, let’s talk about a gift that will make your favorite golfer smile from ear to ear—especially on the links. Blue Tees Golf has quickly become one of the most buzzworthy names in accessories, because the gear is just sublime. And there’s no better way to stock up on this equipment than by picking up the Player Pack, which boats two of the brand’s best items at a big-time discount with two additional items providing even more convenience.

The Series 3 laser max rangefinder alone is an item that will help a basic golfer get a better feel for the game, and the Player speaker is ideal for providing a soundtrack and keeping your iPhone charged. Joining them in this pack are the MagHub, which keeps the other two items attached and organized in your bag and cart, and also a multitool that includes a divot repair, ball marker, groove cleaner, club tee, and bottle opener.

Sure, the giftee might be thrilled, but the gifter should be pleased, too, because this limited edition offering also comes with a nice discount.

Monoprice Power Bank

The Monoprice Power Bank 44369.
Travelers should never leave home without a high-quality portable battery. Monoprice

Aside from connectivity, battery life should be your biggest concern. Especially if you’re carrying an iPhone, Airpods, a watch, and the rest of the gadgets I’m about to list below. Let’s start with the basics, though, and choose a portable battery charger that packs enough punch to handle your most important digital accessories.

Monoprice offers a trio of power banks that can handle everything from one phone to your whole kit. The simple choice for the minimalist traveler is the Monoprice Power Bank 44369, which has a capacity of 10,000mAh or, for those of us who don’t speak tech, enough for two or three full phone charges. This is especially great for couples because it has a dual port for charging poolside or at the beach. The 44370 model can handle as many as three devices, or 4-6 phone charges, and the 44371 is the big dog of the bunch, allowing 4-6 rapid charges for five devices.

Shot Scope X5 GPS Golf Watch

The Shot Scope X5 GPS Golf Watch in black.
It’s like having the world’s smartest caddy on your wrist. Shot Scope

Three things made my game significantly better this year: my Takomo 101 irons, a borderline miraculous visit to The Kingdom at Reynolds Lake Oconee, and the Shot Scope X5 GPS Golf Watch. I was always skeptical of the need to know the distance to the pin from every spot on the course, but that’s obviously dumb. When you hit the ball as many bad places as I do, you most certainly need to know the crucial numbers for getting back on the right path.

Not only does the X5 act as a personal digital caddy in that capacity, but it also makes finding and adding courses a breeze. And that’s just one of the many exceptional touches this watch offers, as it also comes with 16 club tags for performance tracking, keeps track of your real time scoring, and counts your steps from the car to the clubhouse and beyond.

RipIt Monsters Ink Putter Grip

The RipIt Monsters Ink putting grip.
It’s time to make your clubs stand out from the rest. RIPIT Grips

Want to make new friends on the golf course? Add RipIt Grips to your clubs, sit back, and wait for the comments to pour in. At every course I have played since having my clubs re-gripped with the Marilyn, Uncle Sam, Geo, and other various designs, other golfers, cart attendants, and even the pros and instructors have asked me about them. In a sport that has long lacked personality and character, people love seeing this kind of creativity in and around our golf bags.

Now, RipIt has rolled out its first putter grip, and the design is an indicator of the Australian brand’s plans for the future. The Monsters Ink concept is a collaboration with Aussie artist Happy Decay, who has already worked with companies like Nike, Prada, and Porsche, among others, and it is just the beginning of exciting partnership with emerging artists. Judging by how quickly golfers jumped on this one, that means great things for upcoming swing grips featuring the works of Evan Weselmann, Nori Okawa, and Renato Flores.

Lucyd Lite 2.0 Sunglasses

Lucyd Lite 2.0 Sunglasses
With a variety of styles, every type of traveler is covered. Lucyd

Whether traveling for work or a family vacation, I love golfing alone. Getting out on a course at the crack of dawn and knowing there’s not a soul in front of me does wonders for keeping the golf demons in my head from ruining 18 holes. It also allows me to listen to my favorite playlists, which I usually do with one of my portable speakers. However, when I am traveling as light as possible, and with my favorite caddy already on my wrist, I recently discovered a new way to save bag space, keep the sun out of my eyes, bring my music along, and look great while doing it all: the Lucyd Lite 2.0 Sunglasses.

The first time I tried a pair of Bluetooth shades, I thought they were clunky and aggravating, but I should have known that time would cure all ills. Lucyd’s new offering is a slimmer, lighter style that looks good for any occasion, so you can wear them even in those moments when you don’t need a soundtrack. Aside from golf, these sunglasses are also great for exploring, sightseeing, or simply relaxing on an empty beach.

Tifosi Swank XL Sunglasses

Tifosi Swank XL Sunglasses
Sometimes a simple style is the best. Don’t overthink it. Tifosi

What are the most important aspects we look for in a pair of golf sunglasses? Durability, for starters—especially when you’re playing a course in the Caribbean and Mexico, where ocean breezes hit you with a salty mist that can wreak havoc on lenses. If you need one pair to go from the course to the resort and beyond, style matters just as much. And if you’re worried about possibly losing them or leaving them in the cart by accident, price is also near the top of your list.

Enter: Tifosi Swank XL. While I love having a pair of floating sunglasses that I can use on land or water, a lighter frame has one serious drawback: it slips right off my face when I’m sweating heavily. This is a huge problem on my home courses in Florida as well as my Caribbean favorites like Old Quarry Curacao and Royal Turks and Caicos, so the Swank XL is a terrific solution. The hydrophilic rubber frame actually increases its grip when it gets wet, so sweat, rain, and ocean water are no concern. And at just $25, it’s a hell of a bargain on a classic look with cool color variety.

Tomo Golf Bravo Shoes

Tomo Golf Bravo Shoes in gray.
Versatility, comfort, and style collide in one fantastic pair of shoes. Tomo Golf

Have you ever had a Cinderella moment with a new pair of shoes? You’re not sure they’re the right style or fit just by looking at them, but you give it a shot anyway and it ends up being the best pair of shoes you’ve ever worn? That’s basically what happened when I recently tried on my first pair of Tomo Golf’s Bravo shoes, because this is a stylish and insanely comfortable concept that will undoubtedly only keep getting better.

For starters, the simple, fun style allows for the Bravo to be worn anywhere, which is clutch for anyone who needs to keep the backpack light (the shoe weighs just a tick under 11 oz.). But what I love most about this new essential is the extra cushion in the heel, as it saves my sensitive heels from scraping against the back of the shoe (the sacrifices I make to keep wearing no-see socks) and just flat-out feels fantastic. That goes a long way when your travels take you an even longer way.

Even the infamous Bear Trap is no match for the Takomo 101 Irons. Islands

Of all the made-up holidays we celebrate because we simply love celebrating anything, National Golf Month might be the one that is the most unnecessary. For most golfers, no matter how good or bad we are, rain or shine or mind-blowingly hot, we never stop thinking about this sport that is both wonderful and mean, so I’ll just borrow a cliché and state the obvious: every month is National Golf Month.

Still, it’s a holiday and you and the golfer in your life deserve to be pampered. If anything, a nice gift will hopefully add a little positivity to your mojo or add a little swagger to your profile. From the irons to the shoes, here’s the gear I’m absolutely loving right now.

Takomo 101 Irons

One of my favorite things about my Takomo 101 Irons—aside from the affordability and fact that they might have been crafted by wizards—is watching this company take off and become one of the hottest new names in the game. Some of the sport’s most popular influencers are now riding the Takomo wave, and it’s simply thrilling to see more and more people learn firsthand what I’ve been screaming for at least a year: these irons are absolutely phenomenal.

First and foremost, they are extremely forgiving and swing like a breeze. Switching from a “major” brand to Takomo made me wonder if I was making a mistake, but the experts behind this concept had people like me in mind, as the 101s were designed for casual and beginner golfers who don’t have time to practice daily. Even my much better friends—and two instructors—confessed how much they love swinging my irons and the Takomo Skyforger wedges as well.

Equally important, though, is that the traveling golfer should love them because the price is low enough that lost or damaged luggage won’t feel like a stock market crash. Not that you want to lose your sticks, obviously, but less money spent means more for a high-quality travel case (like Samsonite’s hard case that says, “I’m all business, even in paradise”) or this next accessory…

Stewart Golf VERTX Remote Trolley

A golfer with the Stewart Golf VERTX Remote Trolley.
It lacks the wisdom of a human caddie, but it’ll still save your back. Stewart Golf

As the temperature (hopefully) declines, golfers who love to play for the fitness value will prefer to walk more and leave the carts at the clubhouse. Obviously, that either means lugging a heavy bag around for 18 holes or choosing the right trolley, and UK-based Stewart Golf has made it clear that the VERTX Remote is the only trolley for the job.

What makes this one so special? Its coolest capability basically allows it to do the caddy things the tech accessories can’t do for you: bring you your clubs. Golfers will love using the Active Terrain Control feature to summon their trolleys from up to 100 yards away. That’s especially great for those moments when you know darn well you’re holding the wrong club and don’t want the people behind you shaking their fists in rage.

Instead, they’ll be staring in awe.

ORCA Golf Customized Bag

A golf bag from Orca Golf.
A customizable bag is the pinnacle of creativity and style on the course. Orca Golf

Hey, if you’re getting new irons and a fancy remote trolley to carry them, you might as well have the hottest personalized bag in the game. And forget a cart bag with your name stitched on the side, because the intricate process used by this creative team will leave no doubt in any golfer’s mind that this is not their bag when they mistake their own for all the other similar brand names at the clubhouse.

Instead, ORCA allows you to choose the bag model and then upload whatever logos, artwork, and colors you prefer, so if you want to be the only dude on the course with a “Macho Man” Randy Savage bag, go right ahead and do it. (Except please don’t because that’s my idea.)

Carl’s Place Mevo+ TeeParty Golf Simulator Package

The Mevo+ TeeParty Golf Simulator Package from Carl's Place
Simulators offer an opportunity for golfers of all experiences to learn in a casual environment. Carl’s Place

You know that old joke about how you’ll know if a person is a vegan (“they’ll tell you!”)? Well, that’s how I feel about golfers who have simulators set up in their homes. Except I love hearing all about them, and I love it even more when I’m invited to play them, because they’re just so much fun (and I don’t have to worry about being on a packed Florida course, somehow with a 5-some playing into us while we wait for the twosome in front of us to six-putt /endrant). Choosing one is, of course, the hardest part, but fortunately Carl’s Place makes it too dang easy.

Obviously, space plays an important part in the selection process, so the new Mevo+ TeeParty Golf Simulator Package offers golfers multiple sizes of the C-Series DIY Golf Enclosure Kit (which includes the premium impact screen) so they can plan and play accordingly. Also included are the FlightScope Mevo+ 2023 Edition launch monitor, BenQ LU710 Golf Simulator Projector, and the 5’x8′ Country Club Elite Golf Mat. And while the serious golfers will love the analysis and tracking features of the Creative Golf 3D Software for Mevo+, young players will get the golf itch by playing a variety of fun games that will provide indoor entertainment and instructional insight.

The only thing missing is the swagger, and that comes with the simulator apparel from Carl’s Place, because why not increase the comfort while dominating virtual courses?

True Linkswear FS-Slide

The True FS-Slides
A golfer’s feet will love these slides for almost any occasion. True Linkswear

Of all the news I heard at this year’s PGA Show, one of the most exciting revelations came from the team at True Linskwear, the geniuses behind my favorite footwear for on and off the course. When I first learned about this brand, it was because people were raving about the All Day Knit 2—arguably the best shoe in travel and golf. This simple, stylish concept has been ideal for anyone who packs light and needs an “all of the above” shoe, as I wear mine on the plane, at the resort, and on the course.

So, how does that get any better? With the introduction of the True All Day Knit 3, which offers better heel padding for those of us who wear no-see socks and have sensitive heels. But before I could even celebrate this new shoe, the team behind it all let me on a big secret: resort wear is coming. And now it’s here, starting with the “Golf and Leisure Club” drop.

I wanted to just highlight everything, but your attention spans won’t allow that. So, I’ve chosen my absolute favorite for, again, travel and golf: the True FS-Slide, an extremely comfortable sandal option for those moments when you don’t need full coverage. From the resort pool to the 19th hole, give your feet a break with exceptional style. (And this slide pairs oh so nicely with the All Day Vacay Button Up, too.)

Blue Tees Player+ GPS Speaker

The Player+ GPS speaker from Blue Tees Golf
This GPS speaker does a little bit of everything. Blue Tees Golf

Bluetooth GPS speakers are all the rage right now and having tried several I’ll admit they’ve helped. But then I caught wind of the buzz building around Blue Tees Golf’s tech-sessories—especially the 3 Max rangefinder, which has earned rave reviews—and early tests of the Player+ GPS Speaker are coming back unanimously positive.

What sets this model apart from other speakers, including those from the biggest name brands, is the touch screen display that shares the hole, its specs, and the golfer’s distance all of which are helpful for those of us who typically just look at the pin, shrug, pull an iron out, and hope for the best. Basically, we are golfing at a time when there are more aids than ever, and companies like Blue Tees are not only helping us shlubs play so much better, but we get to listen to our best playlists while we do it.

Solis 5G Personal Hotspot

The Solis 5G personal hotspot
Golf, exploring, lounging poolside—there are plenty of reasons to own a personal hotspot. Solis

The Solis Lite Hotspot has long been a constant accessory in my carryon gear (and hurricane preparedness kit), and the first time that I realized just how important it is was when I was on Hole 4 at Quivira Los Cabos and I couldn’t get a signal on my phone to save my life. That’s bad news not only for whichever GPS device I’m using, but also for keeping my playlists bumping. But golf aside, having a portable hotspot will just make any getaway easier and safer.

Now, Solis has stepped it up with the 5G personal hotspot, so you can connect to the strongest available signal and enjoy faster speeds. Plus, the rugged design means it basically belongs in every adventurer’s backpack, because you simply need to listen Enya when looking at the most beautiful waterfalls in the world (or Kenny Loggins when you’re playing closest to the pin with the strangers you’ve been paired with at Teeth of the Dog).

Rheos Stono Sunglasses

The Rheos Stono unisex sunglasses
The Stonos is the olive shade. Rheos

For my hottest golf apparel take, I’ll confess that traditional golf sunglasses are a little fugly for my taste. The sleek style and narrow lenses remind me of professional cyclists and 1990s professional wrestlers, and I’m sure they offer certain advantages for the more intense players who can measure their own distances using the sun and shadows. But for us casual golfers, it’s all about finding the right look with a style that isn’t clunky or annoying.

When I first added the Rheos Lanier sunglasses to my bag for water adventures, I was thrilled by the extremely lightweight over the fact that they’re built to float so I won’t lose them in the ocean. Then it occurred to me that this might be the ideal style for a golf course in the Caribbean heat as well, and by the fifth hole at the Ocean Club in the Bahamas I realized I was correct. And while the Lanier is still in my travel rotation, I like the new Rheos Stono style even more, as the color choices make it phenomenal for those one-backpack, one-item-for-any-occasion quick getaways.

Linksoul Low Tide Short

The Linksoul Low Tide Short
The Low Tide style is a traveler’s Swiss Army short. Linksoul

Are you really a golfer if you don’t have a drawer filled with Linksoul shorts? That’s a trick question, because you don’t need to play to enjoy the immense comfort provided by this California company’s gear. Like the True shoes (of which there has been a Linksoul collab that we’d love to see again), the Low Tide Shorts should be the preferred choice for minimalist travelers who want something that works for a variety of occasions.

With versatile colors, these shorts can go to the gym, beach, pool, trails, driving range, and probably even the airplane, so long as it’s not on the return trip following those activities.

Birdie & Ace Racerback Polos

Birdie & Ace Racerback Polos and V-Top shirts
Fun, stylish performance gear that’s great for tennis or golf. Birdie & Ace

Hot on the heels of the buzzworthy “skort” from this creative newer company comes the Racerback Polo, which is made with the same soft and durable performance material. Available in a variety of colors and patterns, the Racerback (and similar, equally fun V-Top) are ideal choices for women who not only play both golf and tennis—at home or on vacation—but also want to include a sense of style that has been lacking from golf apparel for a long time.

RIPIT Grips

A set of Ripit Grips featuring various colors of the Geo styles on irons.
These grips don’t just look fun—they feel great, too. RIPIT Grips

Circling back to my Takomo irons, the only thing that other golfers and my instructors find more interesting than the clubs are the RIPIT Grips. In fact, when I was recently playing Teeth of the Dog at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic and I asked my caddie, Guillermo, for my 4-iron, he laughed with delight when he saw the peach-colored “Marilyn” grip. It instantly became a topic of discussion for the next two holes, and everyone in my foursome took turns examining my clubs.

Now, the Marilyn might be a little risqué for some golfers, but RIPIT Grips offers a variety of fun, creative styles, from the simple Geo and Suiggle patterns to the goofier Daily Diet and Bloody Ripper. Grab one of each and your clubs will instantly become the talk of the course. Unless, of course, your pal Boner puts his cart in the lake again.

A trio of Revolve Golf Bags.
A great golf bag goes a long way—like all around the world. Revolve

Playing golf on vacation can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, when you visit the Dominican Republic to play Teeth of the Dog or Mexico to take on El Camaleon or Quivira Los Cabos, you can take a million photos to share on Instagram and make all your golf buddies back home insanely jealous. On the other hand, you have to pack a lot of extra gear and, unless you’re fine spending a few hundred dollars on rental clubs, you also have to pack your sticks and lug them around, too.

It can all be a bit much sometimes.

Fortunately, there’s so much gear out there now that is designed to make the experience more convenient without taking affecting your skills and reliance on certain tools and gadgets. And best of all, when you bring only the gear that you need most, that means unpacking is easier as well. Here’s the gear that I recently brought with me to PGA National and Ocean Club in the Bahamas and why I think every traveling golfer should want to bring it on their next trips, too.

Revolve Golf Bag

I recently purchased another brand’s cart bag because I loved the design and look, but after two rounds with it, I was furious because it never stood up on its own and constantly fell over. Guess who isn’t a fan of that? My hotel room’s neighbors. I was back to square one with a need for a durable, convenient bag that not only does the job of carrying my clubs and accessories, but also travels well and looks good, because style always plays a big role.

The solution to all my problems came with the Revolve Golf Bag. Lightweight and boasting enough pocket space to carry my balls, gloves, towels, and more, this is already as fine as any carry bag can get, but the two detachable wheels and retractable handle are downright brilliant additions. It is an exceptional choice for when you’re staying at a resort that doesn’t have a golf course and therefore can’t or won’t hold your clubs, because you can move across the property with ease, as opposed to having to stop to adjust a clunky cart bag and maneuver through families who insist on walking 10-wide.

And normally I don’t care much about people checking out my gear on the course, but every attendant who helped me or simply saw my bag at PGA National stopped to ask me about it, because I could tell they appreciated the convenient design more than anyone. Although I had to teach them how to take the wheels off to properly strap it onto the cart, because that caused a little confusion each morning of my stay. But that learning curve aside, this bag will travel the world with me, because it is simply my favorite.

Takomo 101 Irons

A Takomo 101 iron displayed next to a tee sign at the Ocean Club Golf Course in the Bahamas.
An affordable club will make golfers feel better about bringing them on trips—but these are great irons, too. Islands

The sleek, simple design of my Takomo 101 Irons also always has other golfers asking me about my gear, because people see them and think that I’ve spent big bucks on improving my game. Not quite, friends. Yes, I love these clubs because they swing like the breeze, and I have never hit irons better in my years of trying to play golf than I have with my Takomos. But I love them most of all because of how affordable they are.

That’s why they were created in the first place: to give golfers a budget-friendly alternative to the sets that cost four digits. Affordability also goes a long way in the travel realm, because prior to owning this set, I was terrified by the idea of bringing my clubs anywhere they could be lost. Poor baggage handling, careless resort attendants, or just some sticky-fingered golfer who decided he liked my clubs—these are the fears I previously lived with. At least with my Takomo irons, I know they can be replaced if the worst happens, even if I’d still mope for weeks.

Bearbottom Tech Polo

A man wearing a Bearbottom Tech Polo
Versatility in apparel is any traveler’s best friend. Bearbottom Clothing

One of my greatest goals in testing and learning about new travel gear has been finding the perfect polo for a little bit of everything. I’ve worn some good options, but none has made me as comfortable and carefree as the Bearbottom Tech Polo, which comes to us from the same company that makes my new favorite dry bag.

To a lot of people, a polo is just another shirt, but when you’re on vacation and trying to keep your luggage light, it can be your best friend. As simple as the style gets, this one comes in three basic colors that all wear well enough for everything from the airplane to the resort’s fine-dining option. But the aspect that matters most is comfort and this is a polo that feels as good on the golf course as it does on the sunset catamaran cruise. Pack two of these in your backpack and don’t bother with another shirt for your weekend escape.

Shot Scope X5

The Shot Scope X5 GPS Golf Watch in black.
It’s like having the world’s smartest caddy on your wrist. Shot Scope

Don’t tell my Apple Watch this, but this is the reason I rarely wear it anymore. For the simplest needs, the Shot Scope X5 is an ideal timepiece with a clear, accurate display with five interchangeable digital faces for your everyday preferences. But on the course, this thing is a pint-sized, lightweight caddy that will do wonders for your club selection and accuracy.

Before owning the Shot Scope X5 golf GPS watch, I never paid much attention to yardage. I’ve always been the kind of golfer who just guesses and hopes for the best, which is obviously a really careless approach to trying to shave strokes off the scorecard. Having the depth of insight that this watch and app boast has been incredibly helpful on my last several rounds, and it builds even more confidence when you know help is just a button tap away.

Tomo Bravo Shoes

A pair of Tomo Bravo golf shoes in grey
Multiple pairs of shoes can be tough to pack, so find a pair that does it all. Tomo

Just like a good polo, I’m always looking for a pair of comfortable shoes that can be worn anywhere on my trips. The best version of this that I have found to this point is the Tomo Bravo, a shoe with so many design perks that it’s hard to decide what I love the most. Obviously, the pillow insoles are a dream to walk on, especially when your vacation involves guided tours and exploration, or when the course is cart path only after a little rain.

Honestly, I’m just in love with the simple style of these shoes. The two basic colors—Frost Grey and Ink Black—go with almost any outfit, so after a morning on the course they’re still fine for walking around downtown Willemstad for shopping and admiring the street art, and they go great with a pair of jeans or travel pants for a dinner on the restaurant’s patio overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

Osmo Active Hydration

An assortment of Osmo Hydration packets
Staying hydrated is crucial for golfers playing multiple rounds. Osmo

Little resort perks like reusable water bottles go a long way with me, mainly because it makes a perfect “free” souvenir, but also because the hot Caribbean sun will keep a golfer thirsty all day long. Being dehydrated is the last thing anyone wants on vacation, but when you’re planning to play one to five rounds of during your trip, you need to be sure that you’re taking care of numero uno.

When you can’t travel with big jugs of sports drink, individual powder packets are the best alternative, and Osmo’s Power Fuel has a permanent spot in my golf bag. Not only are the packets convenient space savers, but the flavors blow away the regular brand’s blue and red. Blueberry pomegranate is my personal favorite, but blackberry is terrific as well, and orange and lemon-lime are also great for traditionalists.

A pair of INNO F-1 Golf Cars on display at the 2023 PGA Show in Orlando.
Sometimes you just want to hit the course on your own. Innodesign

Of all the coolest gear I saw and tried at the 2023 PGA Show in Orlando, I probably spent the most time browsing the new golf carts. I’m hardly in the market for one of my own but seeing the evolution of these seemingly simple vehicles and how companies keep making them better and smarter is nothing short of impressive. And all the while I’m seeing more and more families zipping around the neighborhood in their custom carts, so we have to admit this is far more than a one-trick pony.

But the model that stole my heart is the INNO F-1 Golf Car, a solo-player’s dream ride conceived by Innodesign Inc. in California. Sleek and stylish, looking like something Kevin Flynn would drive if Tron’s MCP had a golf course. There’s just something cool about the idea of waking up early and quietly driving out to the first tee in bright red electric cart.

Hopefully, it will still have enough room for all the new gear golfers will be rocking this spring, including my top picks.

SoundExtreme by Ecoxgear

For boating, golfing, or simply lounging by the pool, a great, versatile soundbar goes a long way. Ecoxgear

No golf cart is complete without a proper sound system because music always makes a round better—when enjoyed at a considerate volume. From the moment I set up my SoundExtreme-SEB26 Wireless Electric Soundbar, I was blown away, not only by the clarity and crispness of the sound and volume, but by the design, durability, and especially the ease of assembly. Obviously, I don’t have the cart yet, but there’s also incredible versatility in this device despite its size.

For the sake of testing the sound quality and capabilities, I have used it in my garage space for yard projects, connected it via Bluetooth to my poolside TV to considerably enhance the sound on weekend PGA tournaments, and even provided a soundtrack for the neighborhood kids as they played in the street.

But this is still primarily a golf cart boombox, so naturally I had to test the installation process on a friend’s cart. It’ll take a few minutes, but setup is as easy as it gets, thanks to a quick and concise cable connection and mounting design. From there, golfers will never have to worry about anything but choosing the right playlist, because this bad boy was built to withstand it all—rain, wind, sand, and probably even your friend’s errant approach shot that rattles around your cart like a pinball machine.

Carl’s Place Train and Entertain Home Golf Package

The Train and Entertain Home Golf Package from Carl’s Place.
Is it a golf simulator or a home movie theater? It’s both. Carl’s Place

Many golfers have probably dreamed of setting up their own home simulator so they can tee off on Pebble Beach anytime they like, but there’s always that one nagging problem: space. As in, where the heck are we going to put this thing? Carl’s Place is already well-known for developing premium home simulators, but now the Train and Entertain Home Golf Package helps solve the space issue by turning it into something the whole family can enjoy, even if you’re the only one who cares about golf.

Carl’s Place turned to expert YouTuber DJ (@GolfRnD) to create this concept that is equal parts simulator and movie theater. So, when you’re not hitting off the divot strip and living out your wildest golf dreams, the entire squad can make plenty of popcorn and gather to watch Tin Cup and Happy Gilmore. Or, you know, movies that don’t involve golf if that’s what they’re into.

Safeplay Golf Monster Mat

An up-close look at the Monster Mat golf practice aid.
Thicker and more realistic than other practice mats, the Monster Mat is a very helpful tool. Safeplay Golf

For those of us who simply don’t have the space for a simulator or prefer to work on our swings outdoors, the Monster Mat from Safeplay Golf is simply as good as it gets. I have purchased plenty of hitting turf pads in the past, and not one of them can hold a candle to this 5’ x 5’ turf platform. Forget the thin pieces of foam covered with fake grass and miss me with the plastic carpet that comes with most affordable chipping practice sets.

My biggest problem with the thinner, cheap mats has always been the pain and discomfort that comes with hitting a bad shot, and I’ve injured my wrist several times because of this. The Monster Mat will make an inexperienced golfer feel like there’s no bad shot, as it doesn’t punish you for chunking the iron. In fact, it has helped me build shot confidence so well that I want to bring it to the driving range, which isn’t that difficult, so long as the attendant is cool with it.

Shot Scope X5 GPS Golf Watch

The Shot Scope X5 GPS Golf Watch in black.
It’s like having the world’s smartest caddy on your wrist. Shot Scope

One of the most convenient things about golf clothing and accessories is how so much of what we wear is being designed for everyday use. Shoes can be worn on or off the courses, while performance polos and shorts have become every minimalist traveler’s best friends. I’ve always felt the same way about my Apple Watch, too, but as I have incorporated more golf into my vacations, the need for a convenient GPS device has become a priority, and so the Shot Scope X5 GPS Golf Watch has entered the chat.

The sleek design is ideal for myriad situations, especially all things travel, but golfers will love having access to front, middle, and back distances for more than 36,000 courses around the world, as well as an AI performance tracker that provides 100 statistics. There’s also a step-counter for general fitness use, and the customizable faces and various colored straps make this a fantastic all-around fashion accessory.

TecTecTec Team8 Golf GPS Speaker

The TecTecTec Team8 Golf GPS Speaker in use on the Ocean Club Golf Course in the Bahamas.
Paradise always has a playlist, but it’s better when the speaker makes you better at golf. Islands

Another important accessory for a lot of us is a Bluetooth speaker for enjoying our favorite golf playlists (again, at a responsible volume), and for those times when we don’t have a massive boombox in our own golf carts, the TecTecTec Team8 Golf GPS Speaker is a remarkable alternative.

First and foremost, for a speaker that fits in the palm of your hand, the sound is exceptional. I assumed the role of DJ on a recent round at the Ocean Club Golf Course in the Bahamas, and the random golfers I was paired with were quite impressed by the clarity and volume. But what blew them away is the fact that this is also a convenient GPS device that can tell you all the distances of each hole you’re playing at the touch of a button. And, best of all, the magnetized bottom makes it simple to attach to the cart frame.

Con.Struct Green Collection

A man wearing a performance polo from the Con.struct Green Collection.
Every traveler should want versatile apparel that saves luggage space. Con.struct

Minimalist travelers yearn for gear that can go anywhere and clothing that can be worn in any scenario. Give us a polo that can go from golf to brunch to the boat, and that’s two less pieces of clothing to be packed. Make it with recycled materials and you’re really scratching all our itches, and that’s exactly why we’re head over heels for the Con.Struct Green Collection right now.

Produced with renewable solar energy and recycled polyester, the goal with this line is to reduce pollution without affecting comfort. All the while, the polos, short-sleeve button downs, windbreakers, vests, and performance shorts and pants maintain a traditional sense of versatile golf and travel fashion while adding some elements that are a little fun and quirky.

Waggle Pargarita Golf Polo

The brand new Pargarita performance polo from Waggle Golf.
The Pargarita is one of the newest styles from this eclectic brand. Waggle Golf

A fun game to play while watching any PGA tournament is “Spot the Waggle gear.” As this fun, creative brand rises in popularity, the colorful polos and hats are popping up all over the place and judging by the reaction to the 2023 Azalea Collection, it’s only a matter of time before Waggle Golf is one of the biggest names in the sport’s apparel business.

My personal favorite from this year’s new drop is the Pargarita golf polo because it’s just about the most tropical design imaginable. There are plenty of “fun” brands popping up in the golf space lately, but what sets Waggle apart is the quality of the on-course apparel. These shirts are as comfortable as they are clever, and they’re almost always the talk of the clubhouse.

Bearbottom Rapids Dry Bag 10L

A man carrying the Bearbottom Rapids Dry Bag 10L.
There’s no reason to get your most important accessories wet when on vacation. Bearbottom

Big adventures require bigger bags, but when we’re hitting the links in paradise, a smaller dry bag can be a very important accessory. We already love the Bearbottom Rapids 30L backpack, so it’s a no-brainer to add the Rapids Dry Bag 10L to the cart bag.

Small enough to not be a burden for keeping the travel load light, this 500D PVC pack can be sealed watertight so crucial accessories like a wallet and smartphone don’t get wet at the beach or when that random afternoon storm picks up.

Rip It Grips

A set of Ripit Grips featuring various colors of the Geo styles on irons.
These grips don’t just look fun—they feel great, too. RIPIT Grips

Of all the new gear I’ve tested and added to my bag in recent months, nothing has had other golfers talking like my new set of Rip It Grips for my irons. Sure, the creative designs of the Uncle Sam and Bloody Ripper are conversation starters, but it’s all about the feel. A lot of golfers aren’t keen to letting other people touch their clubs, but I’m here to spread the gospel and so I want people to know that these grips are as soft to the touch as any others.

Durability and performance always remain the biggest factors and so I was elated when I made it through my round at the Ocean Club, not only with no sign of wear on any of my new grips, but also no blisters on my hands. Those of us with delicate paws know how bad a round can go when the grips are ruthless on our skin, so I’ve never been happier to not have to immediately reach for the golf tape to make it through 18.

A Takomo 101 iron displayed next to a tee sign at the Ocean Club Golf Course in the Bahamas.
An affordable club will make golfers feel better about bringing them on trips—but these are great irons, too. Islands

Save the best for last. While my new golf friends all spent several holes getting used to the rentals at the Ocean Club, I couldn’t have been happier to have my Takomo 101 Irons for the first time in paradise. With each round, I just can’t imagine swinging another club because these are so clean and forgiving, and the design always makes other golfers ask about them as well. (Between these and the grips, I’m having a lot of golf conversations lately.)

Playing in the Bahamas was a great test for the Skyforger Wedges, too, because it was very windy the morning I played, and so I relied heavily on low runner shots, which can really screw with accuracy. I’ve never been great with wedges, but sometimes you just need a crash course and I’m already way more confident with them. Of course, we’ll circle back and see how I feel again after I play Teeth of the Dog next month.

These grips don’t just look fun—they feel great, too. RIPIT Grips

Roughly 60 balls into my twice-weekly bucket of twice as many, a fellow golfer spotted my frustration and agony from the other side of the driving range. He made his way over to me and confidently declared, “You have a blister,” as I considered my best Captain Obvious comeback. “Let me see your club,” he continued, taking the club from my hand before I could even tell him he was right. “These grips are terrible,” he concluded after a very brief examination.

“Here, try my club.” His pitching wedge had a jumbo grip on it, which felt bizarre after years of using standard grips, but sure enough, blister be damned, the swing was fine, the ball went straight, and my hand felt mostly pain-free. “A lot of golfers don’t realize how important grips are,” he said as we exchanged clubs again. “Get yourself the right set of grips on those clubs, and you’ll be much happier on the course.”

As soon as I was back at my computer, the quest for the right grips began, but I wasn’t just looking for the right feel. I always need the right look, too. My polos are fun, my bag is fun, and my club covers are fun. There’s no such thing in my game as matching, and I don’t give a hoot if my gear clashes a little. My golf icon is more Al Czervik than Arnold Palmer, so everything in my game needs color, character, and a touch of craziness with all the bells and whistles.

At face value, that certainly describes Ripit Grips. This Australian company has created a variety of grips that are fun, quirky, and even a little bit lewd, but these designs were developed to help golfers display their personalities through their clubs, which you don’t see much in the old school name brands. The Judge Smails crowd might not like these, but the weekend warriors who just want to crush it, Bryson style, are going to love this look.

But fun only gets you so far down the fairway. Performance plays the biggest role, and even though getting your clubs regripped isn’t that expensive, it’s still a huge decision. It’s like getting a tattoo—these things aren’t permanent, but they’re a B-word to remove. Fortunately, mine aren’t going anywhere.

My new range friend offered his advice right before I acquired a new set of clubs, so I first stopped by the local sporting goods store, purchased a few jumbo grips and the do-it-yourself kit, and then returned home to perform some experiments in my garage. I popped the jumbos on my old Nike irons, waited until they were set, and returned to the range. Yes, they were a little more comfortable, but they weren’t right.

Fast forward two months and my Ripit Grips were installed on my new Takomo Golf irons, and they instantly passed the personality test when the guy at the pro shop raved about the cool designs. The first thing I loved about ordering the iron set from Ripit was that you can mix and match, so all eight clubs can be the same or different, which is great if Mary Jane isn’t your bag, or if you want to go heavy on Uncle Sam or Bloody Ripper.

The Daily Diet style of Ripit Grips.
Fun styles like Daily Diet will surely have your fellow golfers jealous. Ripit Grips

Finally, it was time to find out if the performance matches the personality. As always, I am not a golf expert, so I base my conclusions on simple factors. In this case, I made a list of questions to answer once I hit 10 balls with each club that was rocking a new style:

Do they feel better than the old grips? Substantially. I don’t know if the specific patterns are conducive to a smoother experience or if it’s just that the combination of natural and synthetic rubbers are simply that much better than the standard alternatives. Either way, they feel smoother and that inspires more confidence in my swing.

Did they upset that one spot on my right hand that always blisters? Not yet. Fingers crossed that it remains this way. Nothing worse than having to mummy wrap with golf tape before each round.

Do they feel durable? This was probably my biggest concern, because sometimes gimmick brands lean more toward novelties, which means the fun only lasts so long. But after several rounds, my confidence growing with each swing, I’m immensely impressed with how clean and consistent the grips feel. There’s no wear, scuffing, or loss of color after several months of regular use, but I still have the Florida summer ahead. Things could change, but I really doubt it.

How do they handle the elements? That’ll be tested more in the months ahead, but they’ve already been exposed to a few rainy rounds, and all is well. If anything, the combo of new clubs and grips has made me more inspired to properly clean and maintain them between rounds.

What do I love the most? Feeling like I’ve created my own clubs. They’re fun, the Ripit Grips create a conversation, and most importantly they feel great. As an average golfer, I can’t ask for anything more than that. Unless, of course, there’s a magical grip out there that would do the golf equivalent of the movie Like Mike.

Until then, these will do just fine.

golf clubs
New golf clubs are a serious investment, and one clever company is doing something about that. Takomo Golf

No matter where we travel and which resorts we stay at, the most consistent thing we heard in 2022 was that people are playing a lot of golf. It makes sense, obviously, because many golfers probably didn’t play much in 2020 and even a good chunk of 2021, so tens of thousands of sets of clubs had been gathering dust in garages across North America. And finally, when it was time to get back out there and tee off again, those bored, frustrated players made up for quite a bit of lost time.

That’s why we are declaring 2023 the Year of Golf on Islands, as great rounds at epic courses like Quivira Los Cabos and Kapalua’s Plantation have us itching to go even bigger in the New Year.  Where will we end up? We have plenty of surprises in store, but it all begins with a new set of clubs.

Takomo 101 Irons

Buying a new set of golf clubs is a big investment, and it’s something I’d been kicking around as I’ve improved my game thanks to several visits to one of the Caribbean’s great miracle workers. One aspect that weighed a lot on my decision was travel, as in, “Do I feel comfortable taking these expensive clubs with me on my trips, and do I trust the airlines and myself not to lose or damage them?”

Calmer travelers might say I’m being paranoid, but when you spend four figures on anything, you have every right to be overprotective. Fortunately, before I made any permanent decisions, my brother-in-law tipped me off to Takomo Golf, a Scandinavian company that promotes the mantra that golf is for everyone by offering irons that won’t break your bank. That was certainly music to my ears.

As sleek and cool as they are budget-friendly, the Takomo 101 Irons were designed to offer forgiveness without affecting distance. So, if you’re like me and often crank a ball into the wild blue yonder (in this case, some beautiful Caribbean water), this set will help lessen the chance that a mishit ruins your round, because the thin faces have been precision-milled, which loosely translates to, “Even your worst shot might end up okay.” And these irons are proving to be godsends because I’ve played them on two rounds thus far, Skyforger Wedges included, and I’ve marveled at the way they’ve helped correct my worst habits. Even my friends have given them a go and they can’t believe the smoothness of the swing.

I’m extremely excited to take my Takomo irons to a lot of new courses in 2023 and continue to spread the gospel.

Takomo Pikku Bag

golf bag
A light Sunday bag should be a prominent piece of anyone’s golf gear. Takomo Golf

The other tough aspect of traveling with clubs is lugging your cart bag through an airport with an appropriate travel case. Takomo’s Pikku Bag is a slim enough Sunday style that it allows for light, convenient movement, while not requiring the bigger, padded cases to keep everything safe during flights and baggage handling. And even if you’re staying home and playing the local course, the jet-black style simply looks good.

Stitch Golf MUT Bag

carry-on for golf
One day it’s a regular carryon and the next it’ll fit your entire set. Stitch Golf

A good golf travel bag isn’t hard to find, but one that is as innovative as it is helpful will certainly steal our hearts. That bag is the Stitch Golf MUT—Multiuse Traveler Bag—which not only offers the head-to-grip protection we desire while we’re cramped in our airplane seats, but also transforms into a regular roller duffle for when the clubs stay at home.

Duvin x Puma

Duvin clothing
Even if you can’t be loud on a golf course, your outfit can. Duvin Design Co.

Golf fashion is subjective, as anyone can see upon arrival at the course’s pro shop and driving range. Some people are consistent with their styles whether home or away, and others take the opportunity to be a little more creative in tropical settings. For the latter crowd, we present the Puma x Duvin golf polo and bucket hat, which bluntly scream, “I came to paradise for an incredible round of golf.”

Just don’t be surprised or embarrassed if Rickie Fowler shows up in the cart behind you, showing off the same swagger.

Carl’s Place Build Your Own Golf Simulator

Golf simulator
Golf simulators are all the rage, whether for practicing at home or entertaining guests. Carl’s Place

According to the National Golf Foundation, as many as 12.4 million people played golf off-course in 2021. Obviously, the rise of Topgolf and similar businesses played a huge role in that, but there are also a lot of really cool simulators that people can have installed in their homes so they can experience the next-best-thing to playing some of the most beautiful courses in the world.

The biggest problem is that homes vary in size, and some people don’t have the space required for predetermined setups. That’s what makes the Carl’s Place Build Your Own Golf Simulator so ideal, because the golfer can determine and pay for what works best. Just the impact screen? Book it. A luxury home simulator on par with the kind you’d play at the Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas? Smash that order button.

But don’t forget to also pick up the right gear. Carl’s Place has also launched its Off-Course Collection boasting comfy clothes for both lounging around the house and cranking a bomb right down the fairway in your own living room.

Arcade 1Up Golden Tee

Golden Tee arcade game
Remember not to hit the ball too hard, or else you’ll be shopping for a new screen. Arcade 1Up

A simulator might be a little too much for some golfers, so let’s go old school with it. The Arcade 1Up Golden Tee brings everyone’s favorite bar game (with respect to Silver Strike) into the comfort of your own home with the classic standup style that’s great for impressing guests and celebrating your own sense of nostalgia. And it’ll rarely, if ever, get old because this machine is programmed with Golden Tee Classic and the ’98, ’99, and 2K versions.

Pro tip: Practice when your friends aren’t visiting so it’s easier to whoop them when they are.

Insta360 ONE RS 4K Action Camera

insta360 camera
For action shots or selfies galore, this camera will get the job done. Insta360

I had just returned home from Maui and couldn’t wait to upload my golf video and photos from the Bay Course at The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua. Except instead of my regular tradition of cringing as I rewatch my slice on a Par 3, my footage helped me realize that my backswing was way too high and straight, and that’s why my swing speed had dropped off to embarrassing numbers. All hail the versatility of the action camera!

About a month later, I lost my previous action camera while running around Aruba, and an influencer told me that all the kids are raving about the Insta360 these days. Specifically, the Insta360 ONE RS 4K Action Camera is celebrated for its high-quality video and photo capabilities in any settings, and especially its durability and battery life (compared to the well-known competition).

Just don’t leave it on a restaurant table somewhere in the Caribbean.

CEP Compression Sleeves

compression knee sleeve
After a long day of being outside and engaging in any kind of sports, your joints deserve a break. CEP

Older golfers, hear my call! It was only this year that I really started taking compression seriously. I’ve worn compression socks during flights in the past to see what the buzz was all about, and they certainly help keep my feet from feeling pain-free as I squeeze them under my backpack beneath the seat in front of me. But a round this week and next, as well as a couple next month and multiple driving range trips in between? The aches add up.

The CEP Compression Knee Sleeve has become a staple in my golf and travel kits because there’s just no such thing as too much comfort when your knee starts throbbing from a day spent walking the course or when your legs are in an awkward position for four hours because the passenger in the middle seat has no concern for the imaginary leg boundaries between seats. I’ve also been mixing in the CEP Ortho Ankle Sleeve because the old dogs tend to bark a little louder when they’ve been marching through the woods in search of lost golf balls.

Treblab HD7

portable speaker
Always bring a playlist, but just be sure to listen at a respectable volume. Treblab

This is where some golfers will disagree, but every round deserves a soundtrack. Some golfers love to play music while they’re playing, but other understandably want nothing in their ears aside from the chirping of birds and perhaps waves crashing. I like to exist somewhere in the middle, in that I love my 80s and 90s hip hop playlist bumping from my Treblab HD7 portable Bluetooth speaker, but I know better than to make it a distraction to other golfers. Let’s keep it peaceful out there.
