Caribbean yacht charter
Picture perfect Caribbean yacht charters with The Moorings. The Moorings

Picture the perfect Caribbean vacation. Perhaps a beachfront villa rental offering seclusion and relaxation comes to mind, or maybe it’s a small-ship luxury cruise promising multi-island exploration. Now imagine a five-star tropical escape that lets you effortlessly experience both. Exclusivity and freedom—that’s the winning formula of the best vacation you’ve probably never heard of: a fully crewed, all-inclusive yacht charter with The Moorings.

Accommodating six to 10 guests—ideal for a family or group of friends—the luxurious motorized sailing yachts operated by The Moorings specialize in flexible itineraries and personalized gourmet cuisine. The state-of-the-art catamarans used for the company’s all-inclusive charters are all under five years old, built to stringent specifications, and feature air-conditioned staterooms with queen-size beds and en suite bathrooms. These sleek vessels are crewed by an experienced captain and a gourmet-trained chef, typically a couple, who will share their love for the islands as they become your personal tour guides on an unforgettable bespoke Caribbean vacation.

Flexibility is key to all crewed voyages with The Moorings; in the Caribbean, charters are available in the British Virgin Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Lucia, the Bahamas (the Exumas and the Abacos), Grenada and several other locales. Spot a gleaming white-sand beach you’d like to visit? You can. Want to linger at a snorkel spot teeming with colorful sea life? No problem. Eager to sip a cool cocktail or two at the best beach bars in the BVI? Go for it! That’s the beauty of a luxury yacht charter with The Moorings: Guests, no matter their experience at sea, are free to create the itinerary of their dreams and then relax while an experienced captain makes it a reality. Beyond the Caribbean, island-lovers can also book a crewed charter with The Moorings in the Greek Islands, Croatia, Sicily, Sardinia, Tahiti and Belize.

The extraordinary freedom of an individually curated sailing means your all-inclusive vacation unfolds exactly as you want, from a freshly prepared breakfast enjoyed on deck at sunrise to lazy afternoons swimming in picturesque coves, posing for keepsake photos at the Baths on Virgin Gorda (after the cruise ship crowds have left, of course), or marveling at blissfully remote Anegada, where you’ll feel as if you’ve arrived at the edge of the world. In the off-the-beaten-path Exumas, skim over the surface of some of the clearest, most dazzling blue water imaginable or hang out with the islands’ world-famous swimming pigs. Sun-kissed and utterly relaxed, you’ll wind down with unlimited wine and cocktails from your catamaran’s fully stocked bar as you savor the sunset and an incredible dinner prepared to your personal preferences (vegetarian, pescatarian, or lactose- or gluten-free, for example), which have been ascertained via a pre-cruise questionnaire.

The Moorings has more than 50 years of experience in private yacht charters, and all crewmembers are trained to provide a consistent and reliable luxury experience for their guests. Your home away from home will be one of the company’s exclusive crewed vessels, which range from 45 to 58 feet in length and feature sleek, modern interior décor and ample outdoor space for relaxation. Options include The Moorings 4500, sleeping six guests; The Moorings 5000, sleeping eight guests; and The Moorings 5800, sleeping 10 guests.

The extraordinary freedom of an individually curated sailing means your all-inclusive vacation unfolds exactly as you want. The Moorings

Your intimate and low-key Caribbean yacht vacation can be as active or relaxing as you wish. Guests seeking to explore and play have access to water toys, including kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, inflatable tubes and snorkel gear. While some travelers opt to disconnect while sailing, those who wish to stay in contact with friends and family back home still can, because each of The Moorings’ luxury catamarans is equipped with Wi-Fi.

While island-hopping in the BVI, it’s also possible to experience the more social aspects of the yachting lifestyle with a visit to Virgin Gorda’s North Sound, where legendary resorts such as the Bitter End Yacht Club and Saba Rock cater to yachties with a welcoming ambience and live music. But if a private beach picnic with chilled Champagne is more your style, your captain can make that happen too.

“The best-kept secret in travel is that a crewed yacht charter with The Moorings offers the luxury of extraordinary experiences and access to places you might not ordinarily see—places that are certain to make you say, ‘Wow!’” says Ian Pedersen, senior marketing manager for North America for The Moorings.

If this sounds like the kind of Caribbean escape that celebrities regularly indulge in, it is. But you don’t have to be famous to appreciate the privacy and exclusivity offered by a sailing charter with The Moorings. It’s easy to book a charter to celebrate an anniversary or milestone birthday, or enjoy a multigenerational family vacation (children are welcome). The company’s crewed catamarans are bookable by the day, with a five-night minimum. All-inclusive rates start at around $20,000 for a seven-night sailing accommodating six passengers. The Moorings is also a full-service travel agency that can arrange your flights and transfers. With one phone call or online consultation, you can ensure that your next Caribbean vacation will be luxuriously carefree, perfectly curated and truly unforgettable.

Hideaway
St. Thomas is already a favorite destination for many travelers, but newer properties like The Hideaway at Hull Bay will make it even more popular. The Hideaway at Hull Bay

The northern side of St. Thomas now offers a surprising escape for discerning travelers in search of a bespoke experience. The Hideaway at Hull Bay, which opened earlier this year, is a beachfront estate that accommodates only 36 guests for a fully tailored private island experience. Spread across five acres, the property is comprised of two villas and eight cottages that offer a creative curated vacation.

The Hideaway indulges guests with a mix of luxury and playful sophistication. Spacious three-bedroom, three-bath beachfront villas feature Caribbean-chic design and wrap-around oceanfront balconies with spectacular views. Eight beachside cottages provide all the comforts of home with hand-crafted furnishings, fully equipped kitchenettes, cozy reading nooks, and private patios for al fresco dining.

The lush vegetation sets this tropical oasis apart with pathways that meander through starfruit, passionfruit, guava, and banana trees, all products that appear on the estate’s breakfast and cocktail menus. Guests can while away the day on a lounger at the swimming pool or enjoy lawn games on the spacious green area.

The Pavilion is the central gathering spot enticing guests for happy hour with communal seating and a fully stocked private bar. The Hideaway specializes in catering to every guest’s desire with a fully stocked commercial kitchen and can arrange for group or family events like a movie night under the stars, complete with fireside s’mores and stargazing.

Guests also have exclusive access to a concierge who can arrange local tours and water excursions such as boating, snorkeling, paddleboarding, and kayaking.

One of the prized features of The Hideaway is the property’s 100 percent organic two-acre farm that grows more than 50 varieties of vegetables, fruit, flowers, and herbs, around which dining menus are created. For more casual dining, The Shack is just a short stroll away, and this 50-year-old establishment is legendary as the spot where locals gather to dine on fresh fish tacos and soursop coladas.

Amazing beach club on a private island in the USVI
The beach club is a first for the USVI, and it is only just the beginning of something special on this private island. Lovango Resort and Beach Club

Not very far from Cruz Bay in St. John, Lovango Resort and Beach Club is the kind of place that can make an entire region buzz. After all, it’s not every day that a new resort, let alone a private island, opens in the U.S. Virgin Islands. In fact, when it opened in December, Lovango became the first new resort to be built here in the last 30 years, so there is something genuinely special about this passion project from a couple that knows a thing or two about cultivating a memorable vacation experience.

Little Gem Resorts owners Mark and Gwenn Snider have already delivered incredible experiences at their award-winning properties in Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, so if anyone is capable of creating an incomparable setting for families and couples, it’s the brilliant minds behind Winnetu Oceanside Resort and The Nantucket Hotel and Resort.

“We set out to find an opposite season, U.S.-based destination that would have a good synergy with our New England resorts, from a guest perspective,” Gwenn tells us. As luck would have it, when the couple was vacationing in St. John a few years back, they were able to explore this very special island, and a plan came together.

“When Mark and I were shown the property we were so entranced, because of its natural beauty and breathtaking vistas,” she says. “As we explored the island, we were fascinated and could see this becoming an opportunity to create a private island resort.”

Poolside cabanas offer a place to relax out of the sun
Daily visitors can enjoy poolside cabanas when they’re not exploring this beautiful island and its surrounding waters. Lovango Resort and Beach Club

Aside from the obvious allure of the island’s natural beauty, the other no-brainer aspect is location—by boat Lovango is minutes from Cruz Bay and less than 20 minutes from Red Hook in St. Thomas—and that also gives the property the advantage of boasting the destination’s first beach club. Even if people aren’t staying here, they can still make day trips, and they will undoubtedly leave with the desire to choose Lovango next time.

Originally intended to be a private residential community, Lovango is not your typical resort. Fortunately for Mark and Gwenn, the previous owners completed several crucial aspects, including the installation of three deep water docks and some solar, as well as mapping out roads. Most importantly, one villa was built out, serving as the main resort villa for rent this season.

Like most resorts, though, Lovango’s plan was altered by the pandemic. That meant the owners had to be a little more creative in working through adversity.

“Because we were able to take a step back, we slowed our roll on the resort and decided to build the public amenities,” Gwenn explains. “We put in a 145-seat restaurant that is both indoor and outdoor—we have a fantastic chef, and his food is pretty spectacular—and we built the beach club. It’s very much a European model, that you can rent a cabana or a day bed by our infinity pool and really have a curated beach experience.”

Incredible snorkeling at Lovango
Guests at Lovango will have access to some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean. Dan Mele/Lovango Resort and Beach Club

The three-bedroom resort villa, which is already sold out through May, is ideal for family getaways, as it can be booked by day or week and offers everything we want in a Caribbean getaway—privacy, exclusivity, views for days, and plenty of little perks that go a long way in making a vacation that much better. A stocked pantry for snacking by the private pool, a fire pit for sharing romantic dinners and cocktails, launch service to Cruz Bay, and access to a wide variety of activities, from exploring the island’s natural beauty to enjoying some of the best snorkeling the region has to offer. Guests also receive beach club memberships and priority seating in the on-site restaurant.

Lovango will also be anything but typical as the Sniders complete their overall vision. For starters, the private island still has a residential component, with 14 lots available for private villas that will also be designed to celebrate the surrounding natural beauty. Bungalows will be added, as will glamping tents for the ultimate nature-lover’s experience.

As for right now, though, Lovango seems to be just what the USVI needed.

“People are here enjoying themselves,” Gwenn says, “and it’s been amazing.”

Clear ocean and beach in U.S Virgin Islands
With beautiful beaches and stunning waters that are perfect for snorkeling, diving and all kinds of watersports, the U.S. Virgin Islands is a spectacular destination for families. Shutterstock

When you become a parent, your daily life becomes all about them—and so do your vacations. Luckily, today’s resorts in the U.S. Virgin Islands are packing the amenity list full of what you need, from kids’ clubs with daily activities to grocery delivery right to your villa’s fridge. It all adds up to a hassle-free experience, so you spend more time making memories to last a lifetime. Here are the best resorts for families in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Bluebeard’s Beach Club and Villas, St. Thomas

The vibe is quiet and relaxed at Bluebeard’s Beach Club and Villas, a Club Wyndham property on the southeast coast of St. Thomas. The beach is sheltered, with almost no waves—perfect for small children. For older kids, we like the resort’s outdoor game room with table tennis and billiards, and oversize chess on the lawn. Onsite, you’ll also find a tennis court, a pool with a volleyball net and a deli for refueling between games.

Secret Harbour, St. Thomas

Secret Harbour sits on one of the best beaches on St. Thomas for families. It’s quiet and wide enough for groups to spread out. Plus, the sugar-soft beach is flat and free of rocks, making it super friendly for even little water babies. Snorkeling, scuba diving and water sports rentals are available onsite, giving families with older kids more options for activities. We love that the 48 beachfront condos have kitchens, so feeding your crew meals and snacks is easy any time of day.

Virgin Islands Campground, St. Thomas

A Caribbean camping experience isn’t for every family, but for those who appreciate nature, a quieter escape and the experience of being on a small island—in this case, the Water Island—there is no better experience than the Virgin Islands Campground. The property sits on a choice stretch of golden beach, and offers quick access to the island’s hiking trails. The accommodations are stand-alone cottages with electricity, with a communally shared kitchen. Ferries run four times each day between Water Island and Crown Bay, St. Thomas.

Tamarind Reef Resort and Spa, St. Croix

Tamarind Reef Resort and Spa, with just 40 rooms, offers a retreat-like resort experience along a shallow, white-sand beach with conditions generally favorable enough for even toddlers. Older kids will enjoy the volleyball and tennis courts, as well as the paddle boards, kayaks, snorkel gear that are free for guests to use. Parents will like the protected waters, sheltered from waves thanks to the offshore island of Green Cay blocking any wave action.

Divi Carina Bay All Inclusive Resort, St. Croix

Find Divi Carina Bay All Inclusive Resort on the southern coast of St. Croix, 20 minutes by car from Christiansted. The quieter location comes with a wide, private beach where sailboats, kayaks, paddle boats, snorkel gear are available for guest use. We like that younger kids can join in the action with the Divi Treasures kids’ club, which organizes pool games, sandcastle-building contests and dive-in movie nights with popcorn and drinks.

Sugar Bay Resort and Spa, St. Thomas

The soft, inviting beach that fronts Sugar Bay Resort and Spa is reason enough to bring the fam to this spot—and the Kid’s Club seals the deal. The half-day sessions include bumper boating, mini-golfing, scavenger hunting, iguana feeding and more. Parents will love the swim-up bar, in-room on-demand movies and seven on-site restaurants. Note that the property is currently under renovation, with plans to reopen in late 2019.

Bolongo Bay Beach Resort, St. Thomas

A great choice for families with older kids, Bolongo Bay Beach Resort, a 15-minute drive east of Charlotte Amalie, outfits their white-sand beach with one of the island’s most extensive collections of water toys: aqua tricycles, Hobie Cat sailboats, kayaks, Jet skis, paddle boats, pool noodles, plus the onsite St. Thomas Diving Club offering scuba and snorkel sessions. Plus, everyone who books a stay of five nights or longer gets a complimentary sunset sailing tour.

The Westin, St. John

The Westin St. John Resort Villas is one of our favorite U.S. Virgin Islands resort thanks to its white-sand beach, quarter-acre pool and watersports offerings that include scuba diving, Jet-skiing, boating and more. All the villas have kitchens, with in-room grocery delivery an option for families who want to jump right into pool and beach time, and still have snacks and drinks on hand. For little guests ages 3 to 12, the Family Kids Club offers half- and full-day sessions with arts and crafts, movies, games and more, plus evening sessions are available so parents can enjoy a night out.

Renaissance St. Croix Carambola Beach Resort & Spa, St. Croix

Renaissance St. Croix Carambola Beach Resort & Spa occupies one of the most scenic beaches on island, set against a backdrop of rainforest-covered mountains. The beach is somewhat protected, but in the winter, bigger waves do sweep the coast, making this shore better suites to bigger kids. Kids old enough to snorkel will appreciate the reefs just yards from shore, home to lobsters, stingrays and even octopi. We also really like the buffet dinner nights, which make feeding the whole family a breeze. Other perks include complimentary guided hikes of Hams Bluff on the eastern edge of the property, plus most rooms have screened-in porches ideal for napping and reading.

The Buccaneer, St. Croix

With three beaches, two pools and three restaurants, The Buccaneer has enough action to keep your kids entertained for the week. Staff from The Mermaid restaurant serve salads, wraps, burgers, conch fritters and drinks to you poolside so your brood can have nearly uninterrupted play. The resort also offers a Kids’ Camp for guests aged 4 to 12, with beach games, treasure hunts, crab races and more organized from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parents can take that time to enjoy onsite golf, tennis, spa treatments or paddle boarding and other water sports, or simply enjoy some downtime alone.

Quiet beach U.S. Virgin Islands
With beaches so beautiful, the U.S. Virgin Islands boasts a bevy of resorts that offer instant access to the sand and surf. Shutterstock

Not every traveler defines “beach vacation” in the same way. Thankfully, the best resorts in the U.S. Virgin Islands offer a mix of romance, affordability, and family-friendly vibes. You also won’t find a shortage of things to do during your stay. However you like it, have your next beach vacation exactly your way in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Tamarind Reef Resort and Spa, St. Croix

Turn off of East End Road as you leave the town of Christiansted, and as you wind along a green hillside, then down to the resort, you already have a sense of the privacy and away-from-it-all feel of Tamarind Reef Resort and Spa. The beach itself is flat and wide—large enough to host a beach soccer game, should the mood strike. A collection of thatched-roof palapas provides shade just yards from the water. From the shoreline, you won’t enjoy beachside drink service from this budget property, but you can walk a few yards to the Deep End Grill for nachos, fish and chips, fish tacos, burgers, beer and cocktails.

Elysian Beach Resort, St. Thomas

Set along Cowpet Bay on the east end of St. Thomas, Elysian Beach Resort offers a beach experience where you can spread out and relax away from the bustle of Charlotte Amalie. We love that the condo-style suites offer full kitchens and dining rooms—perfect after a long day in the sun when you’d rather not rally for dinner out. Plus, the service at this property ranks among the best on island, which can tip a good stay to great. Note that the property should be receiving guests by summer 2019.

Marriott Frenchman’s Cove, St. Thomas

One of the biggest properties on St. Thomas, Marriott Frenchman’s Cove offers the amenities you expect from a big hotel—grocery shopping service, concierge desk, fitness center—and it’s just a 12-minute drive from downtown Charlotte Amalie. All this, and it sits on its own crescent of beach on Pacquereau Bay. For those who prefer the verticality of hotels, this one offers dramatic, high views of the bay and nearby Hassel and Water islands. On site, guests can also enjoy two outdoor pools, waterslide, sauna and hot tub.

Secret Harbour Beach Resort, St. Thomas

Sprawling white sand beach. Hammocks by the ocean. Quiet location on the eastern tip of St. Thomas. Secret Harbour Beach Resort, with 48 beachfront individually owned condos, has everything necessary for a beach getaway, whether you’re stealing away as a couple, family or solo traveler. Plus, we’re a sucker for the beachside and poolside drink service from Cruzan Beach Club—painkiller cocktail, anyone?

Sand Castle Beach Hotel, St. Croix

Known to locals simply as “Sandcastles,” Sand Castle on the Beach Hotel on St. Croix’s west end is a favorite for its soft sand oceanfront, as well as for its café dishing a menu with favorites from steak-and-eggs brunch to grilled local fish. Lounge all day on the beach, or check out the reef system just offshore from the hotel. There, beneath the typically calm water, you’ll find angelfish, schools of juvenile fish and the occasional sea turtle.

Westin St. John Resort Villas, St. John

With a private beach and fleet of inflatable water toys, plus drink and food service while you lounge and play, the beach of The Westin St. John Resort Villas is exactly the sort of place where you want to commit at least an entire day—if not every day of a weeklong vacation. Plus, from the resort, you can arrange and enjoy a few hours of sailing, Jet-skiing, scuba diving, kayaking or snorkeling before retiring to your all-new room or villa. It’s no wonder why the Westin makes the list as one of the best resorts in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Renaissance St. Croix Carambola Beach Resort & Spa, St. Croix

The beach fronting the Renaissance St. Croix Carambola Beach Resort & Spa feels so exotic, it’s hard to believe you’re still in the States. As you lounge on the wide, golden-sand beach, behind you are the green hillsides of the rainforest. The result is a sanctuary that feels secluded and remote—perfect for a beach getaway. What’s more, we love the hammocks just yards from the beach, which offer further relaxation in addition to the screened-in porches accompanying most rooms.

Sugar Bay Resort and Spa and Spa, St. Thomas

Sugar Bay Resort and Spa has the beach you’d expect with a name like that. This 294-room resort stretches along a cove where the sand is super soft and the waves tend toward nonexistent—making for choice conditions for landlubbers to try the free included watersports. We love that the water is so clear that while you kayak, windsurf or enjoy a paddleboat, you’ll see the sea life below, from stingrays to turtles. Note that this property will be reopening in late 2019.

The Buccaneer, St. Croix

It’s perhaps no surprise that this resort that ranks highly across so many categories also rates as St. Croix’s premier beach resort. The 340-acre property of The Buccaneer is rare in that it offers guests three beaches. Mermaid Beach is the most protected, home to the water-sports center. Find Whistle Beach a short walk from the hotel up and over a small hill, beloved by honeymooners and other couples looking for alone time. Grotto Beach extends along the western side of the property, away from the pools, restaurants and other noise, allowing solitude-seekers to read and relax to the sound of the waves.

The Ritz-Carlton Club, St. Thomas

Some people just need the beach to be happy on vacation. Others want 24-hour-room service and full beach service with servers delivering club sandwiches and icy cocktails. Those in the latter category should look no further than The Ritz-Carlton Club on St. Thomas, occupying 30 oceanfront acres of the eastern tip of the island, provides the idyllic setting you crave with all the details you demand to make for a smooth, seamless trip with nonstop pampering.

With beautiful beaches and ample snorkeling, Buck Island in the U.S. Virgin Islands is a popular destination for day trips.
Buck Island is home to a marked snorkel trail that takes visitors through 704 protected acres, making it perfect for a day trip. Shutterstock

The U.S. Virgin Islands offer snorkelers a wide mix of underwater attractions. St. Croix alone delivers reefs, plus a pier where small critters have taken up residence among the sponges that cover the pilings. Choose St. Thomas for its amenity-packed beaches, and for dayboats that visit offshore reefs. St. John, the most undeveloped of the three islands, offers so much solitude on the beaches and reefs, where you can swim face to face with trumpetfish, schools of fish and sea turtles. These are the best sports for snorkeling in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Cow and Calf Rocks, St. Thomas

Reachable by boat, Cow and Calf Rocks is both a snorkel and a scuba diving site. Most vendors, such as Aqua Action Dive Center, will ferry guests the 45 minutes from the city of Charlotte Amalie to the site. We love the spot for the elkhorn coral, lobsters and occasional sea turtle sightings. Plus, one highlight of visiting a spot with divers is that they’ll often hover and point out the harder-to-find critters deeper down, from eels to stingrays.

Shoys Beach, St. Croix

Find Shoys Beach on the east end of the island, less than 10 minutes by car from the town of Christiansted. Locals love the spot for the sea grape trees lining the shore and providing shade. Visitors like the easy access to reefs home to lobster, spotted moray eels, stingrays and more.

Coki Point Beach, St. Thomas

Coki Point Beach, found on the northeastern shore of St. Thomas, is a good pick for families who want amenities—such as beach chairs and umbrellas available for rent—along with their snorkeling. A sugar-sand bottom makes for easy entry, and in the water, snorkelers will likely encounter parrotfish, remoras, schools of blue tang fish and even shoals of squid.

Buck Island, St. Croix

The nation’s only underwater national monument, Buck Island gives guests the chance to guide themselves through a marked snorkel trail that winds through the 704 protected acres. Visiting the island does require booking a daytrip with a local snorkel tour company, so don’t expect solitude.

But, once the boat moors, you’re free to explore on your own. We love swimming a bit away from the boats to the southeast side of Buck—the side that faces St. Croix. There, you can encounter hawksbill turtles, needlefish and occasionally eagle rays.

Leinster Bay, St. John

Find Leinster Bay, aka Waterlemon Cay, tucked inside a cove along the north shore, located roughly 25 minutes by car from the town of Cruz Bay. Taxi drivers will take you to the spot, but because not many travelers take them up on the offer, it tends to be free from crowds—always a bonus in our book. In the water, you’ll likely see angelfish, trumpetfish and the odd barracuda passing by. Plus, out in the sea grass beds, you may spy a green sea turtle nibbling on the buffet.

Great Lameshur Bay, St. John

Those spending at least one night on island can trek to Great Lameshur Bay on the south side of St. John. This wide flat beach opens to a wide bay where you can easily pass an afternoon snorkeling amid bigger marine fauna, including eagle rays, nurse sharks and turtles, as well as all the reef fish that flit between the sponges and corals. Keep in mind that this outpost spot is far from amenities, so pack a picnic lunch, and bring water and reef-safe sunblock.

Frederiksted Pier, St. Croix

What was once the pier for the west side town of Frederiksted is now a favorite spot for snorkelers. Weave between the pilings to watch juvenile fish, crabs, shrimps and even seahorses seeking sanctuary among the red rope sponges and orange corralimorph coral. Keep an eye on the sandy bottom for flying gurnards, a fish whose pectoral fins open like wings to reveal stripes of turquoise. You may also find batfish, an odd-shaped fish that appears to walk across the bottom.

Jumbie Bay, St. John

Jumbie Bay Beach
For sunsets or snorkeling, Jumbie Bay Beach is a secluded spot that offers the best of St. John. Shutterstock

Located 10 minutes by car from Cruz Bay, Jumbie Bay is the turn just before Trunk Bay. We love that this spot is still somewhat under the radar, as parking allows for just six cars at a time. Plus, the site offers a mix of crags and crevices among the limestone shoreline, and 100 feet offshore, so you can see a greater mix of sea life, from crabs and eels to schools of sergeant major and Creole wrasse fish.

Cane Bay, St. Croix

With a scuba shop located just across the street from this white sand beach, this north shore site is as easy as it gets for newer snorkelers who may have questions about mask fit or where to find the best critters. Scuba divers love the location for its quick access to a wall—that is, a reef that drops away sharply to the depths.

But you don’t need to go deep to spy tons of life, from lobster to Caribbean reef octopus. We love that you can enjoy sunning on the beach and snorkeling as much as you like, then pop across the street to the restaurant Eat at Cane Bay for a drink and Caribbean-spiced chicken wings, or stay for a fuller meal, such as the mahi tacos or the crispy fish reuben.

Salt Pond Bay, St. John

The wide bay that unfolds in front of Salt Pond, found off the island’s southern tip, is a healthy mix of marine life, from juvenile fish to sea turtles. We love that snorkelers need not swim too far from shore before cruising alongside bigger snapper, jacks and other big fish. Just remember that this site is one of the more remote beaches on island, so pack in any snacks, drinks and towels that you may need.

U.S. Virgin Islands
Couples will find every endless romance and inspiration throughout the U.S. Virgin Islands. Shutterstock

The U.S. Virgin Islands are one of the easiest choices for couples looking for a Caribbean escape—you get the white-sand beaches, steel drum music, rum drinks and more—all without the need to exchange money, find your passport or worry about a language barrier. Whether you’re looking for an affordable hotel for two, or a resort with plenty of things to do, the USVI has you covered. Here are the most romantic resorts in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Chenay Bay Beach Resort, St. Croix

Chenay Bay Beach Resort on the northeast coast of St. Croix is a hidden gem, offering couples the sanctuary of stand-alone cottages spread along a hillside and strip of golden sand beach. Each cottage has its own front porch and kitchenette, allowing guests to truly nest while away. The resort also has kayaks, paddle boards and snorkel gear for rent so you can take full advantage of this choice stretch of coastline.

Sugar Bay Resort and Spa, St. Thomas

If you prefer the privacy of staying outside of Charlotte Amalie, then consider the lush east end escape that is Sugar Bay Resort and Spa, located on one of the softest, most picturesque beaches on St. Thomas. We like that this non-chain resort lets you opt for an all-inclusive stay where you pay one price for all meals, drinks, non-motorized watersports and activities. Note that this property will be reopening in late 2019.

Marriott Frenchman’s Cove, St. Thomas

Marriott Frenchman’s Cove is a safe bet for those who want the best of both worlds: The property sits just 10 minutes by car from Charlotte Amalie and its restaurants, bars and shopping—plus it’s set on a calm water beach perfect for lounging the day away. The 453 rooms are built on a hillside, with most rooms offering elevated views of the ocean. We like the resort’s two hilltop infinity pools—elegant by day, and sexy by night.

Bellavista Bed and Breakfast, St. Thomas

With just four rooms, Bellavista Bed and Breakfast offers one of the more intimate settings in the U.S. Virgin Islands. We love how tucked away and secluded the property is, with ample landscaping, including plumeria trees and palms surrounding the pool—which grants inspiring views of downtown Charlotte Amalie thanks to the hilltop location. The owner, who lives next door, prepares a two-course breakfast daily for guests, and is on hand to answer any questions you may have about the island.

Gallows Point Resort, St. John

Situated on its own peninsula, Gallows Point Resort offers quiet seclusion—and it’s just a 10-minute walk from the town of Cruz Bay. Each of the 60 apartment-style suites includes a kitchen and ample living room, giving you plenty of space to spread out during your stay. Plus, because the resort faces west, you’ve got a perfect beachfront location for sunsets.

The Ritz-Carlton Club, St. Thomas

Set along Turquoise Bay on the eastern tip of St. Thomas, The Ritz-Carlton Club offers stunning views of the bay, neighboring islands and the 30 acres of resort property. We love that the Ritz offers 24-hour room service, as well balconies and in-room mini-bars stocked with drinks. Plus, there’s an adults-only serenity pool, which allows for a more relaxing experience. Note that the resort is scheduled to reopen from renovating in summer 2019.

Renaissance St. Croix Carambola Beach Resort & Spa, St. Croix

The Renaissance St. Croix Carambola Beach Resort & Spa occupies what is easily our favorite spot on the island. The resort sits on a crescent of white sand, hemmed in by the green mountain of Hams Bluff on one side, and rocky, undeveloped coastline on the other. Here, the experience is all about privacy. We love the warm, cozy feel of the rooms thanks to dark wood furniture and doors, and the plantation-style décor of the rooms. As a bonus: When the two of you are lounging in bed, you can hear the waves hitting the beach just yards away.

Westin St. John Resort Villas, St. John

Set on Great Cruz Bay, the next inlet south of where the ferry lands, the Westin St. John Resort Villas is just six minutes by car from the downtown Cruz Bay. Explore the town, then retire to these modern studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom villas. Most rooms offer balconies with views of the surrounding green hillsides and Caribbean Sea. Onsite, you’ll find activities including scuba diving, boating, sailing and jet skiing, plus a gym and a spa offering couple’s massages.

The Fred, St. Croix

We love The Fred, a hip boutique resort breathing new life into a restored historic beachside property in Frederiksted, St. Croix. The resort is adults only, and features one-of-a-kind rooms with white and bright minimalist décor (many with kitchens). Each room features a collection of funky modern art—think pop portraits of Audrey Hepburn, Christopher Walken and Jimi Hendrix. Plus, we like the convenience of the onsite gift shop and spa, with a bar and restaurant coming soon.

The Buccaneer, St. Croix

Sure, you may not want to spend your entire vacation on resort grounds, but if you are going to stay put, you couldn’t pick a better spot than The Buccaneer. This classic, elegant resort just a 10-minute drive east of the town of Christiansted and offers onsite golf, tennis, paddle boarding plus a host of other water sports and activities. Its beach, with white sand and patch coral reefs well suited to snorkeling, is reason enough to stay here. What’s more, having a rum punch at the open-air bar overlooking the property and Buck Island is a romantic way to kick off any evening.

U.S. Virgin Islands
From luxury to budget-friendly, there’s a wide variety of exceptional accommodations on the U.S. Virgin Islands. Shutterstock

Saving for your next Caribbean getaway can be easier than you think—especially if you’re willing to forgo a few amenities, such as room service or poolside drink service. Stay at an unfussy property, and you can be on vacation sooner, and with more loot in your pocket for day trips, dinners and souvenirs. Here are some of the most affordable hotels and resorts in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Two Sandals By the Sea Inn, St. Thomas

If you don’t need to stay right on the beach but do want to be within walking distance of one, try Two Sandals By the Sea Inn on St. Thomas, just a four-minute walk from the white sands of Secret Harbour Beach. Rooms are basic, with a white and neutral color palette, kept super clean. All the must-haves—fast WiFi, a fridge and AC—are part of each stay, along with a simple breakfast, starting at $160 a night in low season.

Windward Passage Hotel, St. Thomas

St. Thomas doesn’t offer branded hotels with room rates less than $500 a night. If you’re the type who likes hotel rooms on vacation to be much as they are at home in the States, then try Windward Passage Hotel, which definitely has more of an urban, rather than island, vibe and starts at $175 a night. Plus, the hotel has an onsite casino, bar, restaurant, fitness center, tour desk and everything you’d expect from a big hotel.

Hotel on the Cay, St. Croix

Rumored to have been the setting for Herman Wouk’s “Don’t Stop the Carnival” novel, Hotel on the Cay exudes exactly the laid-back beachy vibe you’d expect. We love that the property sits on its own private island within the Christiansted harbor—giving you ample beach real estate for escapism, but also quick access to the Christiansted boardwalk, a lineup of bars and restaurants. The hotel’s 53 rooms aren’t fancy, but they’re clean and recently updated—a great value for prices starting at $179 a night.

Point Pleasant Resort, St. Thomas

The entire Point Pleasant Resort is oceanfront—but only the eastern edge of the property is sandy, known as Pineapple Beach. To the far right of the resort lies another beach, rocky and perfect for snorkeling. We love that you get two different ocean experiences for nightly rates starting at $210—which includes snorkel gear and beach coolers so you can pack your goodies for the day as opposed to schlepping back to your room.

Chenay Bay Beach Resort, St. Croix

Chenay Bay Beach Resort, just a 10-minute drive east of the town of Christiansted, is located right on the water along a sandy beach that rarely experiences waves. We love that the accommodations are stand-alone cottages, allowing for extra privacy—and each has a small porch in front. A bonus is that the snorkeling right off the property can serve up encounters with stingrays, sea turtles and other big animals. Rates start at $170 a night.

Hotel Caravelle, St. Croix

Right in the heart of downtown Christiansted, Hotel Caravelle has long been a favorite among divers, foodies and active types who don’t need a beach so much as access to what’s fun and happening. Just steps from the Christiansted boardwalk and its lineup of bars, including Shupe’s on the Boardwalk, The Mill Boardwalk Bar and Brew STX, Hotel Caravelle is also a wise choice for those who like to indulge in a few rum drinks or beers. The rooms are all recently renovated, with a bright, airy feel—think lots of white with pops of color. Rates starting at $169 a night.

Olga’s Fancy, St. Thomas

Some hotels boast up-to-the-minute amenities, from televisions in the mirrors to voice-activated music systems. That’s not Olga’s Fancy. This charming inn located hillside just outside St. Thomas gives you that timeless Caribbean feel, yet with a fresh, updated look. Nightly rates start at just $150, and, because you’re so close to town, active types can save further by hoofing it to the beach or to town for dinner.

Company House Hotel, St. Croix

There’s a certain allure and magic to staying in a property dating back to the 1760s, as is the case with Company House Hotel in downtown Christiansted. The property is historic, but modern inside, with all 33 rooms recently renovated—and, yes, there’s fast WiFi and AC. Even if you’re not into island history, you’ll be interested in the price: Rates start at $209 a night, giving you more green to rent a car and explore all the beaches on island, not just the one that would otherwise be in front of your hotel.

Treetops, St. John

Treetops isn’t a treehouse exactly, but it sure feels like one. This intimate cabin-style property with just three rooms is so named for its up-island location amid the rainforest. Super affordable, rates start at $99 a night in off-season for the room called the bunkhouse, a cozy space with smart, nautical-themed styling and efficient use of space to include a fridge and shower. We love the prices, so low that renting a car becomes an option for the 15-minute drive into the town of Cruz Bay.

The Fred, St. Croix

The Fred is just the sort of place you want to be on a first-name basis with. The newest offering on St. Croix, the Fred is hip, fun and stylish—like that cool, in-the-know friend who’s always up on the trends. Find The Fred just a five-minute walk from town, oceanside with a beach. The rooms, starting at $209 a night, are bright and airy, with each one is styled with its own mix of retro furniture and funky, playful art. Plus, the hotel also offers a gift shop and spa onsite.

Steel kettle drummers
The St. John Festival runs for an entire month, but the best partying takes place on July 4, with a parade and fireworks. St. John Festival

With July 4 right around the corner, chances are you already made your plans for watching (or escaping) a local fireworks extravaganza. Maybe you’re heading to an outdoor concert and BBQ, watching a neighbor entertain everyone with a loud, colorful show of his own, or booking a room at a nearby resort to avoid that neighbor. Perhaps you’re taking the boat to watch the festivities from your favorite offshore spot. If your bases are covered, enjoy the show.

But with the holiday falling on a Thursday this year, there’s still a great opportunity to turn this 4th of July into a special trip. Here are some quick ideas for a last second getaway that will deliver fireworks and so much more.

The 65th St. John Festival

St. John Festival kicked off on June 1 with Festival Pan-O-Rama 2019 and has been going ever since. But it’s not too late to head down to the U.S. Virgin Islands for the biggest nights of the festival and carnival season. Emancipation Day celebrations take place on July 3, and the festival wraps up on July 4 with a parade and fireworks show in Carnival Village.

Rooms are still available at local hotels like the Westin St. John Resort Villas and Hotel Cruz Bay, among others, but options are limited.

Baha Mar’s Privilege 4th of July BBQ

Remember Nelly? The rapper behind some of the biggest hits of the 00s will be performing those songs and more for a 4th of July BBQ at Baha Mar in Nassau. The event is being hosted at the resort’s adults-only Privilege Pool, where “the party never stops.” At $250 a ticket, it’s a pricy affair, too, but between the food and fireworks the experience will be worth it, especially if you bookend your trip with a round at the Royal Blue golf course and a visit to the marine life at The Sanctuary.

Red, White and Bahamas

If adults-only doesn’t cut it for your family plans, Atlantis Paradise Island is always a quick and simple destination. This year’s Red, White and Bahamas event is perfect for the whole family, beginning at 6 pm at the Royal Deck and concluding with a fireworks show, all before 10:30 pm, so the kids can head off to bed and the parent that draws the long straw can hit the casino.

In addition to fireworks, guests can enjoy a carnival with games and food, arts and crafts and a special Junkanoo celebration. There’s also a food eating contest, but that is not recommended for anyone who plans on eating dinner at Carmine’s before Red, White and Bahamas begins.

Westin Grand Cayman July 4 Beach BBQ and Bonfire

The recently renovated Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa is hosting the BBQ and Bonfire as a way to combine classic 4th of July food and fireworks with the island’s signature flair. Sticklers for sticky fingers will enjoy BBQ ribs and other holiday favorites, while the resort will also be dishing out fish tacos on top of a full clambake. Running from 6-9 pm, the event will culminate in a fireworks show followed by S’mores on the beach.

Grand Cayman is an advantageous destination for last second travelers, with direct flights from major cities like Miami, Dallas, New York and more.

Hilton Head HarbourFest

Leave the passport in the safe and stick to a U.S. island by heading to South Carolina for HarbourFest on Hilton Head. Sure, there are fireworks shows on Hilton Head Island all the time, but this is the mother of all occasions and it’s especially perfect for families with young children. In addition to fireworks, the Shannon Tanner’s family will perform a special patriotic edition of their local show, and Cappy the Clown headlines an evening of train rides and bounce houses that kids are sure to enjoy.

Rooms are already scarce for July 4, but Beach House Hilton Head not only still has openings, but there’s also an all-day party at the resort featuring four bands.

Best Golf Courses in the Caribbean https://www.islands.com/best-golf-courses-in-caribbean/ Wed, 29 May 2019 01:39:02 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=39260 From Anguilla to Turks and Caicos, these island courses are perfect for golfers of all skill levels.

One of the most popular golf events of the last five years was also one of the most short-lived. In 2016, PGA pros Rickie Fowler, Smylie Kaufman, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas created a social media frenzy with their #SB2K16 vacation in the Bahamas. The foursome experienced Snapchat stardom by sharing antics from the exclusive, members-only Baker’s Bay golf course, and it was so successful that they returned again in 2017 for more shenanigans.

Alas, Spring Break eventually ends for us all, and so when the pros traded Baker’s Bay for Kaufman’s wedding in 2018, golf fans lost their inside look at arguably the best golf course in the Caribbean. However, while you probably can’t play Baker’s Bay, there is still a lot of great golf in the Caribbean. Pack your clubs and gear, and tee off at one of these best Caribbean golf courses.

CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa — Anguilla

CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa — Anguilla
Greg Norman calls his course at CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa in Anguilla “nothing short of spectacular.” CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa

Designed by Greg Norman, the 18-hole par 72 championship course was built to complement Anguilla’s natural beauty. Recently renovated after hurricane damage, CuisinArt Golf Club, offers views of the Caribbean and neighboring St. Maarten. The second hole showcases the Anguilla Channel, while holes 16 and 18 use native trees and plants to create challenging obstacles for even the most advanced golfers.

Tierra del Sol Resort & Golf — Aruba

Golfers at all levels will enjoy the Robert Trent Jones II-designed golf course at Tierra del Sol, which features the Caribbean as a backdrop. After knocking the rust off with some practice swings on the full range and putting greens (especially important if you’re renting clubs), guests will hit the first hole and choose from four sets of tees, each one offering a different angle and challenge. Helping golfers along the way is the Par View GPS yardage system, which gives a virtual pro’s eye view of the course while keeping score for bragging rights.

Royal Blue Golf Course — Nassau, Bahamas

Don’t be too bummed if you can’t get a tee time at Baker’s Bay or the members-only Abaco Club. The Bahamas still offers world-class golf for the general public and Baha Mar’s Royal Blue Golf Course — Nicklaus Design’s first layout in the Bahamas — is a perfect blend of beauty and challenge.

The front and back nines offer two entirely different golf experiences, and while both are loaded with natural obstacles, the course’s CaddieMaster program will help golfers of all skillsets. Royal Blue also encourages golfers to leave their clubs at home and take advantage of the “Better Than Your Own” rental service, which features the latest gear from golf’s biggest brands.

Sandy Lane — Barbados

Sandy Lane — Barbados
Sandy Lane’s three courses are all worth playing, but exclusivity makes the Green Monkey the most enticing of them all. Courtesy Sandy Lane Hotel Co. Limited

Sandy Lane is home to three courses — Green Monkey, Country Club and Old Nine — and each one is a bucket list experience that make Barbados a repeat destination for many golfers. Designed by Tom Fazio, the Green Monkey stands out due to its exclusivity (Sandy Lane guests only) as well as its unique design, having been carved from an old limestone quarry and boasting exposed rock that is unlike almost any other golf courses you’ll ever experience.

Santa Barbara Beach & Golf Resort — Curaçao

Regularly regarded as one of the best golf courses in the Caribbean, Old Quarry is part of the Santa Barbara Beach & Golf Resort complex. The course was designed by World Golf Hall of Fame inductee Pete Dye to provide a challenging golf course that offers views of the Caribbean, Spanish Water harbor and Tafelberg mountain.

Cruise guests stopping in Curaçao for a short visit can purchase a special package that handles everything from shoes and clubs to lunch and transportation to and from the terminal, while family members who would rather hit the pool can purchase a day pass to the resort for rest and relaxation.

Punta Espada — Dominican Republic

Punta Espada — Dominican Republic

Another course often mentioned in the conversation about the best golf courses in the Caribbean, Punta Espada is a Jack Nicklaus Signature course deemed as one of the best in the world. With ocean waves crashing against the rocky shores that run alongside eight holes on this par 72 course, you’ll be glad to have a caddie present to remind you to stop holding up the flow of the game with all your sightseeing.

Rose Hall — Jamaica

Rose Hall — Jamaica
Is Rose Hall’s White Witch golf course truly haunted? You’ll have to play to find out. Rose Hall

Rose Hall is home to two championship golf courses, both of which will satisfy even the most experienced golfers. Each designed by Robert von Hagge and Rick Baril, it’s difficult to choose between White Witch and Cinnamon Hill because they’re synonymous with the best golf in the Caribbean.

Each course offers not only challenging designs in a tropical setting, but there’s also so much history to learn at Rose Hall. Some people even think White Witch is haunted, which allows golfers to blame a ghost for their bad slice.

TPC Dorado Beach — Puerto Rico

TPC Dorado Beach features two championship courses, but casual golfers might be better off sticking to the popular East Course, as opposed to the much more difficult Sugarcane. The East Course offers views of the water, which bodes well for taking Instagram-worthy photos from your golf surfboard while your buddy recovers from losing a few balls in both lakes on hole four.

For anyone brave enough to take on Sugarcane, the Dorado Beach Golf Academy’s experts are on hand to help fix your swing before you face off against those deep bunkers.

The Buccaneer — St. Croix

The Buccaneer — St. Croix
What makes The Buccaneer in St. Croix so special is seeing the ocean on 13 of the course’s holes. The Buccaneer

The Buccaneer Golf Course will make you feel like you never left the clubhouse at your local country club. From the pro shop to the signature third hole, this Bob Joyce-designed course will inspire beginners and reward advanced golfers. That’s not to say it’s easy, but The Buccaneer is not going to make you want to snap your clubs over your knee and throw them into the ocean (which can be seen from 13 holes).

Fancy a quicker round out of the heat? The pro shop has a golf simulator loaded with 93 courses from around the world. However, nothing’s better than getting out there and taking on The Buccaneer.

Provo Golf Club — Turks and Caicos

Provo Golf Club — Turks and Caicos
Between the flowers and the exotic birds, Provo Golf Club is certainly one of the most beautiful golf courses in the Caribbean. Provo Golf Club

Opened in 1992, Provo Golf Club is the only course in Turks & Caicos and has long been a regular choice as one of the best Caribbean golf courses. Decorated by regional flora and fauna, and home to a variety of native birds, the recently re-turfed course at Provo is as pretty as it is challenging. Four tee boxes are available for golfers of all skill levels, with plenty of water and sand to avoid on each hole.
