laguna bali
With a new look and myriad unique offerings, this resort is undoubtedly one of the best places for experiencing authenticity in Bali. The Laguna

Earlier this year, The Laguna, a 5-star Marriott Luxury Collection Resort and Spa, underwent an incredible redesign that now immerses travelers in the best of Bali’s arts, history, heritage, cuisine, and culture. Located on stunning Nusa Dua beach, the property’s transformation and reimagining boast touches that are unique to this tropical paradise.

The 287 rooms, suites, and villas feature décor and designs inspired by traditional Balinese elements. The spectacle of each room is a colorful “sulaman” embroidered headboard, with woven keben baskets, used to carry offerings at temples, that accent the room’s furnishings and specially commissioned local artwork. Guests will appreciate the resort’s signature butler service while those in the grand lagoon suite and villas can enjoy an enchanting floating breakfast in their private pool.

Laguna lagoon
Each lagoon swimming pool is begging to be discovered all over again. The Laguna

Seven lagoon-style swimming pools (including one for children) are hidden among the resort’s expansive tropical gardens, perfect for an afternoon stroll. Nearby, guests can explore a renowned Uluwatu Temple and the Garuda Wisnu Kencana cultural park to learn more about local Balinese traditions.

Six restaurants, lounges, and bars serve a range of cuisines from around the world. Guests can dine among the lagoons at Banyubiru, featuring a pan-Asian and international menu. The beachfront Arwana restaurant serves gourmet fresh seafood under the moonlight.

The award-winning Lagoon Spa, with azure pools and calming waterfalls, is the ultimate Balinese retreat. With eight indoor treatment rooms and steam and sauna facilities, this wellness escape is the perfect spot to unwind at the end of the day. For a real treat, indulge in a signature lagoon Kelapa ritual, a full body 150-minute treatment that starts with a soothing coconut milk foot soak followed by a complete Balinese massage using the purest virgin coconut oil.

Nusa Dua beach
Nusa Dua beach is always a main draw for guests seeking serenity, but the spa will immensely elevate the experience. The Laguna

There’s a full slate of daily activities including beach volleyball, sunrise yoga, circuit training, fruit carving, beach soccer, and Balinese hat-making. Special experiences have also been created for children from paper weaving to beaded bracelet and mask-making to exciting treasure hunts.

For guests who really want the most authentic Bali vacation, a special evening event begins with a cultural Rindik and Legong dance followed by a jamu ritual and an indigenous blessing ceremony at the resort’s temple garden. Next, guests move on to a traditional hand-washing ritual followed by a feast of Indonesian and Balinese cuisine.

AYANA’s Newest Resort Adds an Invigorating Option in Bali https://www.islands.com/resorts/ayana-segara-bali-grand-opening-deal/ Tue, 15 Nov 2022 17:26:28 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=45830 The fourth property in this sprawling estate blends contemporary design with all the local elements guests have come to expect.

ayana segara bali
California cool meets Balinese culture and style at this spectacular new resort. AYANA Segara Bali

Few resort communities on this planet truly reflect the “something for everyone” mantra as well as AYANA in Bali. Set across 222 acres, this luxurious estate has earned considerable praise for its Villas and Rimba concepts, as well as the flagship AYANA Resort, which spoils guests with regional authenticity. But there’s a new star in this constellation, and it is destined to become the immediate crowd favorite.

AYANA Segara Bali recently opened its doors, ushering in a new sense of style at this sprawling Jimbaran oasis. In addition to boasting the largest indoor/outdoor pool in Bali, this resort is also home to a downright massive spa—more than 236,000 sq. ft. for those keeping track at home—which will make it a highly desirable choice for rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. After all, that’s a crucial element when traveling 10-20 hours to get somewhere.

Just like the original AYANA Resort, this property’s 205 rooms and suites will feature unmistakably Balinese décor and accents; however, guests will also experience an overwhelming sense of “California Cool.” Every accommodation spoils visitors with a private balcony or terrace, which amplifies the already incredible views of this cliffside escape that sits above the tree line.

Luna
Luna’s deck will be a popular spot for sunset gazing. AYANA Segara Bali

The highest point in Segara Bali is Luna, one of three new restaurants putting a heavy emphasis on creative variety. This spot will be an instant hit for travelers who crave the best sunsets in the world, but the farm-to-table Indonesian dishes like jagung bakar and mie goreng kaki lima will still be the real treats. The appropriately named Medi will serve fresh Mediterranean salads and pastas, as well as Italian wines that won’t be found anywhere else on the island. And Karang is the all-day dining option serving Pan-Asian and Italian dishes, among other resort staples.

No opening is grand unless it features special deals, and AYANA Segara Bali is offering guests a 25 percent discount on rates, as well as special spa perks that bolster this property’s intense dedication to wellness. A complimentary one-hour AYANA Spa experience and in-room therapy discount should have everyone forgetting why they needed an escape in the first place.

‘Ticket to Paradise’ is Set in Bali—But Here’s Where it was Actually Filmed https://www.islands.com/resorts/ticket-to-paradise-is-set-in-bali-but-heres-where-it-was-actually-filmed/ Tue, 25 Oct 2022 20:19:06 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=45653 The new romantic comedy, starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney, is full of stunning tropical island scenery and splashy comic antics.

Tangalooma Island Resort
Moreton is home to Tangalooma Island Resort, where scenes for Ticket to Paradise were filmed. Tangalooma Island Resort

The new romantic comedy that reunites stars Julia Roberts and George Clooney, Ticket to Paradise is set on the Indonesian island of Bali, but here’s a fun nugget of movie trivia: It wasn’t actually filmed there. What tropical paradise was chosen to fill in? That would be Moreton, an island in the Australian territory of Queensland that’s located just a ferry ride away from Brisbane. And assorted other locales along the Gold Coast and in the Whitsundays were also involved.

Moreton, which is fringed with protected beaches and washed by aqua-hued waters, served as one of the outdoor film sets where beach scenes from the movie, which features Roberts and Clooney as a divorced couple who travel together to Bali to try to stop their daughter from marrying a man she just met, were filmed in December 2021. The island is home to Tangalooma Island Resort, which boasts a range of accommodation types from hotel rooms to beachfront villas and was the setting for the dolphins swimming scene and other coastal segments.

Hamilton Island
The cast and crew had to hop from Moreton to Hamilton Island to film the hotel lobby scenes. Qualia

However, interior shots (Roberts’ and Clooney’s hotel rooms, for example) were a stage set at Gold Coast Studios, while the Long Pavilion at Qualia resort on Hamilton Island served as the fictional resort’s lobby and bar. An incredible Tangalooma sunset does have a major cameo toward the end of the movie.

“Only a 75-minute ferry ride from Brisbane, we often position ourselves as a ‘conveniently remote tropical paradise,’ with our seasonal temperatures, blue waters, tropical palms and relaxed island vibe perfectly fitting the Bali description,” said Bernie O’Keefe, Tangalooma’s Director of Marketing.

Glass Onion house

You Can’t Buy the Private Island Home from Netflix’s ‘Glass Onion’—But You Can Vacation There

Edward Norton’s billionaire retreat is a villa at the Greek resort Amanzoe, and it’s just as spectacular as it looks.

Other filming locations around Queensland included the Gold Coast’s outdoor Carrara Markets, Hamilton Island’s Catseye Beach, North Burleigh Beach and Palm Bay Resort in the Whitsundays. To follow in the steps of the cast and crew, check out this guide by Tourism Queensland.

There’s a reason “Do Not Disturb” signs were created. When a refreshing dip in a plunge pool is just steps from your bed, there’s no need to fight the crowd for a lounge chair — or even don a swimsuit. At these resorts with private pools, that’s exactly the lifestyle you can enjoy with your significant other.

From the Caribbean and Mexico to Spain, South Africa and even Utah, there’s a host of luxurious hotels with private pools perfect for the most relaxing, most romantic getaways. Isolate yourselves at Amangiri in the seemingly remote landscape of Utah; there are sunsets and gorgeous horizons all around. Prefer something more tropical? Visit St. Lucia and Jade Mountain for vistas overlooking the island.

If you’re looking for hotel rooms with a private pool, read on for our list of the best 14 locations.

a plunge pool at Jade Mountain resort in St Lucia
Jade Mountain has long been considered one of the Caribbean’s most romantic resort. Jade Mountain

Jade Mountain – Soufriere, St. Lucia

The 24 suites, aptly called sanctuaries at Jade Mountain, are stacked atop each other on a hillside, all with heart-stopping views. As you open the door, get ready to be wowed: Organic architecture blends curved stone walls with exotic hardwood floors, and the open plan means you’re never without a view, from the king-sized bed draped with mosquito netting to the sans-walls bathroom with its sexy whirlpool tub.

But the stars are the pools. Sized from 400 to 900 square feet, each is lined with iridescent glass tiles in shades like sapphire, jade, magenta and bronze. The effect is so mesmerizing you won’t mind that there’s no TV (or air conditioning, as the lofty locale provides cooling breezes). Just pour yourselves some bubbly, and slip into your infinity-edge paradise.

Royal Davui Island Resort’s private villas are the main reason this is such a preferred property for couples. Royal Davui Island Resort

Royal Davui Island Resort – Beqa Lagoon, Fiji

Each romantic “vale” is nestled into hillside foliage with plunge pools facing out toward the lagoon for ultimate privacy at Royal Davui Island Resort. Trading up from the island or deluxe categories to premium earns you the largest and most private oasis with its own refreshing rock waterfall.

Inside, a 20-foot netted canopy hangs from the ceiling to cocoon the king bed, which floats mid-room on a sea of polished Fijian-wood flooring adjacent to a large bathroom with a whirlpool tub and outdoor shower. A separate living room has sliding glass walls and a sunning patio with twin chaise lounges.

Grand Velas Riviera Maya oceanfront suite with plunge pool
Only the best plunge pools will convince guests to choose them over the beautiful ocean. Grand Velas Riviera Maya

This 539-room all-inclusive is definitely abuzz, but the quiet Grand Class section perfectly combines luxe amenities with honeymoon privacy. All 90 suites in this section have ocean views, spa tubs and oceanfront balconies with private plunge pools. There’s even room for a massage table, should you prefer your spa treatment in suite. Top-floor rooms boast vaulted ceilings and the best views.

Hermitage Bay hillside cottage private plunge pool
Beachside or hillside cottages, guests can’t make a wrong choice. But only hillside have these romantic pools. Hermitage Bay

Hermitage Bay – Antigua

Yes, Hermitage Bay has cottages set right on the beach. But if it’s privacy and plunge pools you seek, request one of 17 hillside-cottage suites. You have to trek up a steep stone path to get there, but your effort is rewarded with the treehouse-like enclave, boasting sexy extras like a king bed, outdoor shower, wraparound sun deck and infinity-edge plunge pool with views that stretch all the way to neighboring Nevis and Montserrat.

The Resort at Pedregal plunge pool
The Resort at Pedregal goes above and beyond by offering plunge pools in every room and suite. The Resort at Pedregal

The Resort at Pedregal – Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Each of the 66 rooms and suites features a private terrace with a plunge pool, but, for the most indulgent ambience, book one of the eight Capella rooms at the Resort at Pedregal. These oversized havens have carved, wood-beam ceilings, a separate sitting area and a driftwood-back king bed positioned opposite a fireplace. The terrace door opens to an infinity-edge plunge pool with stellar sea views. More watery revelry is on tap inside in the rainforest shower for two.

Cavo Tagoo Mykonos Greece plunge pool
Cavo Tagoo offers the best of everything travelers expect from Mykonos. Cavo Tagoo

Cavo Tagoo – Mykonos, Greece

Cavo Tagoo stays true to the stark-white Cycladic architecture Mykonos is known for, but the whitewashed interiors are refreshingly modern. Classic rooms on the lower level have private terraces and refreshing plunge pools while the upper-level deluxe rooms come with infinity-edge pools overlooking the Aegean Sea. A free shuttle runs between the hotel and Old Town five minutes away.

All of the resort’s plush, overwater bungalows offer dive- or step-in access to the lagoon, but couples who book an overwater bungalow with a plunge pool can also take a freshwater dip on the lanai right outside their room. It’s perfect for a relaxing rinse after a snorkel session or a sunset soak complete with champagne.

Inside, contemporary Polynesian décor is equally seductive, especially the oversized tub with lagoon views. The glass panel in the living room floor lets you spy on multicolored reef fish below.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba plunge pool suite
Banyan Tree Mayakoba is the kind of resort that keeps getting better and better. Banyan Tree Mayakoba

Banyan Tree Mayakoba – Riviera Maya, Mexico

For a romantic respite, book a bilevel spa-pool villa at Banyan Tree Mayakoba. Here, your rectangular H2O oasis is the perfect relaxation spot after a massage in your private treatment area. The décor is Asian spare meets Mexican spice. Think minimalist architecture that blends into the landscape and a neutral color palette accented by touches of orange and red.

Your outdoor terrace has twin chaise lounges and a dining area. Round-the-clock room service ups your incentive to stay put, too.

Situated on a ridge 1,100 feet above sea level, the three-walled suites boast panoramic views of the Caribbean, the Pitons (two mountainous volcanic plugs) and the town of Soufriere. Each terrace has a private plunge pool surrounded by lush landscaping. Many also have waterfalls and teak swing sets hanging from the ceiling.

The resort’s 1,200-square-foot Anthurium pool suites are located on the lower level, and each has a private courtyard terrace where gardens and chaise lounges surround a supersized 12-by-16-foot plunge pool.

Uma Ubud Bali private plunge pool suite
With only a trio of plunge pool suites available, this is the definition of exclusive. COCO Uma Ubud

Uma Ubud – Bali, Indonesia

There are just three Uma pool suites at COCO Uma Ubud. They’re constructed in an open, airy Balinese style with separate lounging, dining and sleeping areas. Each bedroom features a four-poster king bed and gleaming terrazzo floor that leads to a light-filled bathroom with a sunken tub for two. Outside, a pair of chaises flanks a sapphire-blue infinity plunge pool embraced by the solitude of the Balinese jungle.

Belmond La Residencia Mediterranean resort
The traditional Mediterranean vibes are strong at Belmond La Residencia. Belmond La Residencia

Belmond La Residencia – Majorca, Spain

The isle of Majorca is classic Mediterranean: olive groves, quaint towns and seaside cliffs. Within the sleepy artists village of Deià is Belmond La Residencia, a pair of stunning stone houses that have been converted into a 67-room Orient Express retreat. Here, guests lounge around the grounds, hike to the nearby swimming cove or hole up in a Tramuntana suite with a tiled garden terrace and private pool.

The stunning Utah landscape is best experienced at Amangiri, a 34-room oasis surrounded by stark plateaus near the Arizona border and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Six of the hotel’s suites have spacious plunge pools and private, candlelit sky terraces accessed by staircase and furnished with a daybed. It’s perfect for evening stargazing.

Earth Lodge Africa resort plunge pool
Earth Lodge is an entirely different experience. Earth Lodge

Earth Lodge – Mpumalanga, South Africa

Spend your mornings spotting lions, giraffes and elephants from a Land Rover while on safari around Kruger National Park. Then, return to Earth Lodge for afternoons staring out over the bush from the pool on your private terrace. The lodge’s 13 suites were made from stone and built low to the ground. While they appear minimal on the outside, inside, they’re an interior designer’s dream.

Each suite is filled with rich metallic art and funky, locally sourced furnishings, such as handmade twig chandeliers.

An island vacation offers all kinds of exciting opportunities to try new things, but if there’s a die-hard foodie inside of you then a novel culinary experience is likely to be a top priority—and perhaps even something to check off your travel bucket list.

Leading hotels, resorts, and island destinations are answering the call for memorable dining moments with an array of food-and-beverage offerings designed to showcase the island’s specialties, the talents of local chefs and, of course, the sunset.

Here are 10 cool resort culinary experiences to try.

Chef-Guided Culinary Excursion

The Place: Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan

Immersing oneself in the tranquility of the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, which features 42 villas and 18 suites set on 20 acres of lush riverside wilderness just outside of Bali’s cultural heart, Ubud, is a treat unto itself. But now guests can go off-the-beaten-track and deep into nature with a chef-guided picnic adventure in the Sayan Valley.

The experience starts with a trek to a secluded riverside location in the jungle, only accessible to Four Seasons guests, where the resort’s chef will set up a camp kitchen and cook a Balinese-style picnic in the wilderness.

HA Private Island Mesa 1 Dinner

The Place: W Punta de Mita, Mexico

Offered just once per night (advance reservations required), the unique Mesa 1 dining experience at W Punta de Mita, located on Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit, lets guests enjoy an exclusive al fresco dinner beneath the stars.

The setting? A 100-year-old Parota tree table set on its own private island and only accessible by stones suspended over the water—and they disappear once everyone (just two people for a romantic evening or as many as 10 for a private gathering with friends and family) has been seated. The meal? A customizable seven-course tasting menu.

Vittle Art Farm-to-Table Dinner

Vittle Art Curaçao
Curaçao is an amazing place for food and art, so it’s only natural that someone would combine them. Vittle Art

The Place: Willemstad, Curaçao

The vibrant Dutch-Caribbean island of Curaçao has a distinctive food scene and creative culinary talent—and travelers with a taste for a private, uniquely curated dinner can book a workshop experience with Vittle Art. The farm-to-table dinner, the creation of local Curaçaoan Kris Sling, features fresh, authentic, and locally inspired dishes from his farm in the countryside.

The dinner is a personalized menu of 9-10 courses, all prepared with ingredients from the land and local ancestral cooking techniques—with plates served on an al fresco terrace at sunset, offering views of Curaçao’s cacti-filled terrain.

Six in Your Sanctuary

Jade Mountain pool
The only thing that makes this view better is great cuisine. Jade Mountain

The Place: Jade Mountain, St. Lucia

Room service isn’t usually something to get excited about. But at St. Lucia’s cliffside Jade Mountain resort, a special dining experience—served to guests inside their three-walled open-air “Sanctuary” with its infinity pool, 24/7 butler service and sweeping views of the twin Piton mountains—is a game-changer.

“Six in Your Sanctuary” is a six-course chef’s tasting menu with wine pairings by Jade Mountain’s sommelier. Adding to the dreamy ambience: a serenade by an acoustic guitarist during dinner for a truly intimate experience.

Underwater Dining

Just don’t be surprised if the marine life is offended by the fresh catch. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

The Place: Multiple Resorts in the Maldives

Dreaming of the Maldives? If so, several different dining experiences set beneath the surface of the Indian Ocean are available at private-island resorts. Options include: Ithaa at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, which is the first of its kind and offers 180-degree views while seated at a depth of 16 feet; SEA at the Anantara Kihavah, featuring the world’s first underwater wine cellar; 5.8 at Hurawalhi Island Resort, currently the largest all-glass undersea eatery in the world; and Subsix at Niyama Private Islands Maldives, which features sea-life-themed décor  with chairs resembling sea anemones and coral-inspired chandeliers.

Sunset Water Table Dining Experience

The Place: Playa Largo Resort & Spa, Florida Keys

Feet-in-the-sand dining is old hat, but couples interested in taking their al fresco dining to the next level can head to Playa Largo Resort & Spa, a tropical oasis set on 14.5 secluded beachfront acres in the Florida Keys.

By booking the unique “Water Table Dining Experience” at the resort’s signature beachside restaurant Sol by the Sea, they’ll enjoy an intimate dinner of fresh, coastal cuisine as they kick off their shoes, dip their toes (and ankles) in the water, and have front row seats to a cotton-candy sunset beneath the soft glow of string lights.

You Hook, We Cook

Corazón Cabo Resort & Spa
There’s no such thing as a bad day on the open water, especially for fishermen. Corazón Cabo Resort & Spa

The Place: Corazón Cabo Resort & Spa, Los Cabos, Mexico

Not only does the Aleta restaurant at Corazón Cabo Resort & Spa feature dazzling destination-inspired dishes—made-to-order sushi and sashimi, a raw bar featuring oysters, local clams, and ceviche, and ocean-to-table main courses—but it also has a “You Hook, We Cook” option, allowing guests to bring the fish they reeled in that day and the restaurant will prepare it however they prefer.

Cabo is known for its world-class deep-sea fishing and the resort is located just a five-minute car ride or 15-minute walk from the marina, so a sea-to-table dining experience is a convenient and delicious way to end the day.

Night Brunch

The Bellini wall starts guests off with a refreshing cocktail. Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino

The Place: Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino

Anyone who craves brunch off-hours should book a well-timed stay at Aruba Marriott Resort, which has turned it into a post-sunset party with its new “Night Brunch” experience. On the first Friday night of each month, the La Vista restaurant transforms into an indulgent brunch scene with a live DJ, colorful cocktails, and tasty brunch bites. Guests can grab a welcome drink from the Bellini wall, where glasses are surrounded by lush greenery and lit up by a neon “Cheers” sign and enjoy other Insta-worthy moments at every turn.

The multi-course experience features classic morning favorites as well as savory bites—Dutch style pancakes, sous vide eggs, chicken and waffles, red snapper, prosciutto ham bites, and fresh pizza—along with dessert favorites such as churros, banana cake, and chocolate mousse.

And what is brunch without the booze? Guests can sip Bellinis, sangria, or specialty brunch cocktails and then take a piece of the Night Brunch experience home with them, since all cocktails are served in a specially branded glass and gifted to the guest. Reservations are required.

Top Chef Winner’s Sushi Bar

Friends and family back home will be incredibly jealous of this experience. Resorts World Bimini

The Place: Resorts World Bimini, Bahamas

Fans of Top Chef have likely drooled over some of the winning creations—and with a visit to the expansive Resorts World Bimini , a beachfront complex located on the seven-mile Bahamian island of Bimini, it’s possible to actually sample some while on vacation. Guests can taste Top Chef season three winner Hung Huynh’s delectable creations at the resort’s Asian fusion Sushi Bar.

This intimate, 24-seat dining venue allows diners to watch as their dishes are prepared right in front of them. Standouts include a variety of nigiri, sashimi, and the must-try signature Sun of a Beach Roll (made with salmon, shrimp, miso honey, and topped with a spicy sliver of jalapeño), as well as classic Asian favorites such as fried rice, pad thai, and dumplings.

Humo Unique Woodfire Grilling

Humo experience
The Humo experience is sure to wow guests with the unbelievable flavor exposed by the chef’s cooking method. Thompson Zihuatanejo

The Place: Thompson Zihuatanejo, Mexico

Argentine-style asado can be enjoyed closer to home with a getaway to Thompson Zihuatanejo, where resident chef Javier Garcia Cerrillo masters the art of open-fire grilling on beautiful white-sand Playa La Ropa. Cerillo has lived and worked in countries that include Argentina, Greece and Spain and his firsthand expertise is on display at the resort’s “Humo” pop-up experience, where he works with smoke to give a very distinct and delectable flavor to his cooking.

Guests can enjoy a variety of meats, among them beef tenderloin, grilled pork ribs with chimichurri sauce and “pollo al gancho” specially grilled with herbs in its own juice. Accompanied by grilled vegetables, rustic blue cheese mashed potatoes, and smoked cheesecake for dessert, the “Humo” grill is a memorable dining experience—especially ay just $45 dollars a person.

Finns Bali lounge resort pool by the beach.
Known for starting some really great parties, Finns Bali leads a crucial effort to help bring life to the entire island. Finns Bali

Bali is one of those places that, when you simply hear the island’s name, you imagine impossibly blue waves splashing against absurdly gorgeous golden beaches, while you sip an extraordinary cocktail with a name you can’t even pronounce. Normally, it’s the kind of dream destination some of us will only ever visit through the magic of TV and movies, but things aren’t normal these days.

Strange times sometimes call for exceptional opportunities.

Like most tourism havens that have been hit hard by closures, Bali and her people have faced unprecedented challenges and made significant sacrifices. Closed for more than a year, this nation is ready to bounce back in a big way, but also with a focus on patience. The “Back to Bali” campaign was launched by Finns Bali, the popular, vibrant beach club, not only as a means of reinvigorating the economy, but also offering travelers something they don’t find in a lot of deals: flexibility.

“There are no words to express how excited we are to welcome travelers from around the world ‘Back to Bali’,” said Beau Whittington, Chief Operating Officer at Finns Bali. “We created this campaign to make the dream of Bali travel start to become a reality again. This campaign is not just about Finns, but the entire island and every industry that relies on tourism. While we realize there is a long road ahead, this first step is monumental, and we look forward to welcoming the world to paradise.”

In this case, it’s the flexibility to merely pay a $69 (U.S.) deposit now and then pay the rest and actually travel within the next three years. The total cost is approximately $350, which is a fraction of the true value of $1,050 in credits for accommodations, food and beverage, and the Finns Bali VIP membership. (Airfare isn’t included, however.) Picky visitors needn’t stress, though, as the credits can be transferred between the three categories for the sake of keeping the getaway customized.

And with more than 100 hotels and resorts and 500 villas to choose from, in addition to 150 tour operators, the Back to Bali campaign is ideal for families, couples, and solo travelers.

It’s for anyone at any time. Within the next three years, of course.

Musha Cay beach house on the beach.
There’s plenty of magic at David Copperfield’s Musha Cay—especially in the water. Musha Cay

Divers always want the best of both worlds. We want to be wowed underwater and we want to be back at the resort in time for happy hour. The easiest way to take it all in is to choose resorts that offer mind-blowing experiences right from the properties (or just offshore).

Here are our picks for the best spots to stay and dive:

Shark Dive

Thirteen tiger sharks show up regularly at the house shark dive at Beqa Lagoon Resort in Fiji. Unlike many other shark dives in the world, this one is renowned for the variety of apex species that show up: lemon, reef, and bull sharks are all frequently in the mix at this site 100-feet deep.

The resort itself is located on the island of Beqa, just a 45-minute boat ride from the main island of Viti Levu.

Trippy Biolume Light Show

Timing is everything when it comes to seeing this bioluminescent wonder off the coast of Roatan, Honduras. Seen only a few days before and after the new moon, a deep-water crustacean rises to the shallows, around 45 feet, where divers can kneel in the sand and witness the magic.

Anthony’s Key Resort takes guests on a night dive just in front of the resort at a site called Overheat, where they can watch what appears to be underwater fireflies. These orbs of light show up one at a time in perfectly vertical chains, appearing to form little underwater cities of light.

Corals Doing the Deed

A boat on the Compass Pointe Dive Resort.
Compass Pointe Dive Resort offers a variety of exciting excursions, from three-tank safaris to exploring the USS Kittiwake wreck. Compass Pointe Dive Resort

You could say corals have an out of body experience when they mate: to breed, coral polyps release eggs—that look like a tiny, pink ping-pong balls—into the water column. The result is thousands of these orbs floating around until a mess of sperm clouds the water.

Because the nighttime event happens every year, dive operators such as Ocean Frontiers on Grand Cayman time it right down to the week it will occur—typically at the end of September. This dive center is the in-house operator for Compass Point Dive Resort, where you can roll out of bed and walk right onto the dive boat.

WWII Cargo Ship

The USS Liberty shipwreck, found off the Indonesian island of Bali, is famous for being the biggest wreck dive reachable from shore. Torpedoed in 1942, the 427-foot, very-much-intact ship lies on its side off the beach of Tulamben on the north coast.

The best part: Puri Madha Dive Resort Bali is so close to the wreck, enough so that you can dive the ship then come back and have a cold one and go for a swim in the pool.

The Great Blue Hole

Turneffe Island
Divers will already be thrilled with the resort, but the proximity to one of the world’s greatest dive locations is a huge bonus. Turneffe Island Resort

We love Turneffe Island Resort in Belize because it’s located just 1.5 hours from one of the most amazing natural wonders of the world: The Great Blue Hole. Whereas most resorts on the mainland require a three-hour trip each way to visit this site that Jacques-Yves Cousteau made famous, Turneffe sits 35 miles off the coast of Belize, so you’re already halfway there.

So, just what is inside a blue hole? Stalactites as big around as divers, and sharks sometimes circling down at 90 feet. The craziest part: the sandy bottom is 410-feet down, covered in lost snorkels.

The Underworld

The Maya believed that the underwater caves throughout their lands were a direct link to the underworld—dive in, and you’ll see why. These caves, called cenotes, can be found by the dozens around the cities of Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras, both south of Cancun.

Hotel Catalonia Riviera Maya offers an onsite dive shop, Pro Dive Mexico, that runs day trips to these otherworldly realms, known for 150-feet of visibility and ceilings full of stalactites. On some cenote dives, swim through tunnels and then pop up in a pond surrounded by a canopy of trees.

Black Pearls

Pearl Havaiki Lodge on the French Polynesian island of Fakarava is unique for so many reasons, including that it has an onsite pearl farm. Not only do the farmed oysters, living among the patch coral reefs, spit out regular pearls, they also produce a black variety as well. Resort owners and staff will teach you how to harvest the goods, starting with an in-water dive.

Sculpture Art Installation

Musha Cay mermaid statue underwater.
A trip to Musha Cay simply isn’t complete without a visit to this gorgeous underwater sculpture. Musha Cay

Musha Cay, David Copperfield’s private island resort, commissioned an underwater sculpture from artist Jason deCaires Taylor. This piece, “The Musician,” sits just 12-feet deep, making it available to snorkelers and divers alike.

Constructed of stainless steel and an ocean-safe cement, the life-size piano, kept company by the figure of a young mermaid, comes with a twist—it plays music when divers approach.

Alien invaders

Nowhere else on Earth do reef manta rays, known for wingspans of 18 feet, show up regularly just yards from shore. On Hawaii’s Big Island, find them most nights in the front yard of the Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay. Yes, you can see them after sunset from the hotel’s observation platform, but the once-in-a-lifetime experience is to book a night snorkel or dive and be in the water as anywhere from three to more than a dozen come in to feed on the plankton attracted to high-power lights that dive operators bring.

These animals swoop, dive, loop, and perform acrobatics, all over your head. As for booking, the hotel concierge can set you up on a tour with a variety of operators; they recommend booking at least a month in advance.

Yellow Submarine

Who doesn’t have a secret fantasy to go for a submarine ride? On the island of Roatan, Honduras, Half Moon Resort’s Captain Karl Stanley offers submarine rides down to 3,000-feet, giving you the chance to see the anemones, black corals and wiggly, wobbly weirdies living down deep.

Over the years, Stanley has also piloted the sub while encountering mantas at 1,350-feet, sharks feeding on dinner, and mystery animals still awaiting classification.

These are the places to go.

Seychelles islands
Are the Seychelles islands worth adding as a second stop on your honeymoon? Some celebrity couples think so. Shutterstock

In the “SeinfeldVision” episode of 30 Rock, Jerry Seinfeld tells Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) about his vacation “in a country in Europe only rich people know about,” and no, it’s not Svenborgia. That throwaway joke is funny because it’s true—even when one-percenters visit the same countries and islands as us mere mortals, they do things and stay places we’ve only imagined. A sunscreen-covered Mark Zuckerberg might be paddle boarding in Hawaii, but he’s probably not rubbing elbows and sharing sand with a family of six from Poughkeepsie.

Honeymoons are a different story, though. A couple will save for years, putting off other trips and eliminating unnecessary purchases, so when the time comes to celebrate a marriage in style, there’s almost no price tag too high or destination too unrealistic. That’s when we look to celebrities for inspiration, because even though they might be springing for the best private villas or luxury yacht charters in and near Grenyarnia, there’s always an affordable alternative that still offers ordinary travelers the honeymoon of a lifetime.

If you’re planning such a getaway, loveholidays recently compiled a list of the top 10 celebrity honeymoon destinations, and it’s no surprise that these locations are almost entirely tropical. The only one that isn’t, well, it won’t shock anyone.

10) St. Barts

St Barts
With a reputation for luxury and exclusivity, there’s no wonder why this is a well-kept honeymoon secret for celebrities. Shutterstock

Pronounce it however you’d like, this Caribbean island has long been known for two things: romance and extravagance. From stylish, luxurious private villas to elegant, eco-friendly resorts, accommodations on St. Barts almost entirely focus on spoiling travelers, which is why celebrity couples like Kevin and Eniko Hart and Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo have chosen it for their honeymoons.

9) Hawaii

Kauai
Each Hawaiian island offers something different for everyone, but the one thing they all have in common is romance. Shutterstock

This seems a little low for such a popular destination, but rest assured that Hawaii is the No. 1 holiday choice for celebrities including Katy Perry, Oprah and Beyoncé, and that last one is all that really matters to most of us.

When it comes to high-profile romance, though, Hawaii is hardly chopped liver. Dwayne Johnson and his wife, Lauren Hashian, celebrated their 2019 wedding with a low-profile honeymoon on Kauai, while Chris Pratt forgot the sunscreen for his Lanai honeymoon with Katherine Schwarzenegger.

8) Bali

Bali
Bali is world renowned for rest, relaxation and being ridiculously romantic. Shutterstock

With incredible views, stunning natural beauty and iconic landmarks, Bali is a legendary destination for couples seeking luxury, romance and arguably the best yoga classes in the world. After popping the question in Hawaii and getting married in Connecticut, Evan Ross and Ashlee Simpson escaped to Bali for their honeymoon in 2014, almost following in the footsteps of Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan, who got hitched in Hawaii before celebrating in Bali. Either way, Hawaii-to-Bali is a trend we can get behind.

7) Punta Mita

punta mita
Punta Mita has long been a quick retreat for West Coast celebrities. Shutterstock

The original celebrity Simpson sister, Jessica, and her husband, former NFL tight end Eric Johnson, celebrated their honeymoon in Punta Mita, and who could blame them? This very exclusive resort community offers one of the best vacation experiences in Mexico.

Don’t take our word for it, though. Just ask Kim Kardashian, who loves this location so much that when she was rumored to be bored with her Ireland honeymoon with Kanye West, she quickly shot down those reports and… immediately scheduled a second honeymoon in Punta Mita.

6) Turks and Caicos

Turks and Caicos
The romance of Turks and Caicos begins with the stunning beaches and continues with wonderful cuisine and luxurious resorts. Shutterstock

Already a favorite getaway spot for Drake, and of course once the home of Prince’s legendary purple driveway, Turks and Caicos has become one of the Caribbean’s best honeymoon destinations thanks to several very high-profile couples. Most recently, Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello introduced the world to Parrot Cay Resort, and they followed in the footsteps of couples like Tony Parker and Eva Longoria and Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner.

If couples are looking for privacy and elegance, as well as beach villas that they’ll want to live in for eternity, the Ambergris Cay private island resort would be a fantastic choice.

5) Seychelles

Seychelles
The Seychelles islands are a favorite spot of some of the biggest A-listers in the world. Shutterstock

We always say, “If it’s good enough for a royal couple, then it’s good enough for you,” and that definitely goes for the Seychelles islands. And sure, this was the honeymoon choice of Prince William and Kate Middleton, but in this case the royalty we speak of is George and Amal Clooney. This Indian Ocean paradise was also the pick for NBA legend Dwyane Wade and model/actress Gabrielle Union, so the power couple rankings are off the charts.

4) Paris

Paris
Even if your heart is set on beaches and blue water, who can resist Paris? Shutterstock

The only non-tropical destination to make the list, the City of Love obviously makes perfect sense. Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher, Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Falchuk, Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman, Lily Allen and Sam Cooper—celebrity couples know what to expect from the home of romance, and you should, too.

One way to get the best and most of the region’s culture and history, as well as a fix of the water and beaches, is a European river cruise. See the Eiffel Tower from the Seine and cut out the crowds, while scoring amazing honeymoon selfies.

3) Bahamas

Bahamas
With so many islands to choose from, the Bahamas is packed with private, romantic options. Shutterstock

After a star-studded New Orleans wedding, Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian spent their honeymoon at the private island Kamalame Cay Resort, which is located right next to the Andros Great Barrier Reef. Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber wed and honeymooned on Nassau Paradise Island, choosing the Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort, as their accommodations. Josh Duhamel and Fergie also called the Ocean Club their honeymoon home, and Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz stayed at the Stella Maris Resort Club for their big romantic getaway.

What these celebrities know is that the islands of the Bahamas are packed with secluded, even private properties, like Cuvee’s Royal Island, that offer romantic experiences like none other. Now, their secret is out.

2) Bora Bora

Bora Bora
For many people, overwater bungalows are as romantic as it gets, and we have a hard time disagreeing. Shutterstock

The top two destinations shouldn’t surprise anyone, as they’ve inspired one of the most important travel questions we’ve ever posed. Overwater bungalows aside, Bora Bora is one of the world’s most beloved honeymoon locations because it feels like it exists on another planet. Resorts like Conrad Bora Bora Nui and Le Méridien Bora Bora provide romantic experiences unlike anything us mere mortals have ever experienced, and even celebrities can’t get enough of the unparalleled pampering and privacy.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux, Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter, Meghan Trainor and Daryl Sabara, Christina Applegate and Johnathan Schaech—so many celebrity couples have chosen Bora Bora for their best moments, and we don’t need to spend too much time on their Instagram accounts to know why.

1) The Maldives

Maldives
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the Maldives tops the list. Shutterstock

It’s worth pointing out that Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union just might be the royal couple of honeymoons. Saying they honeymooned in Seychelles is misleading, because their actual post-wedding vacation included multiple stops, beginning in the Maldives, continuing in Africa’s Serengeti and concluding in Seychelles. So, thanks to this couple’s spirit of exploration and dedication to romance, the Maldives tops the list of honeymoon destinations for celebrities.

But we don’t need a basketball legend and superstar actress to tell us what we already know—unparalleled romance can be found in the Maldives. Josh Duhamel and Fergie knew this, too, as their honeymoon started in the Bahamas and continued at the One & Only Reethi Rah. Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner chose the Maldives, as did Katy Perry and Russell Brand, Tim Tebow and Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, and Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes (which feels like a lifetime ago).

Best of all, the islands of the Maldives are home to amazing hotels and resorts that, while mostly in the ultra-luxurious category, are still well within the budgets of anyone seeking the honeymoon of a lifetime.

Bora Bora
Visitors to Bora Bora are greeted by stunning views of Otemanu Mountain. Shutterstock

Every island-lover has a dream destination—a place so alluring or remote it qualifies as the ultimate escape. These islands number in the dozens, but we’ve narrowed down our list to seven, each blessed with natural beauty, steeped in cultural allure or located just far enough away to seem intimidating. No worries, you can easily get there on a cruise. Here are 12 itineraries that visit seven dream islands: Bora Bora, Tasmania, Easter Island, Santorini, Borneo, Bali and the Seychelles.

Bora Bora

The islands of French Polynesia (aka Tahiti) are all pretty magical, but Bora Bora is the luminous pearl that most visitors travel thousands of miles to see—its radiant blue lagoon fringed by white-sand motus (islets) and crowned by mystical Mt. Otemanu. Cruises that call on Bora Bora as well as most of Tahiti’s main island group, the Society Islands, are offered by both Windstar Cruises and Paul Gauguin Cruises. Which you choose depends on your cruise style.

For a more casual, breeze-through-your-hair ambiance, there’s the 8-day Dreams of Tahiti itinerary on Windstar’s 148-passenger Wind Spirit. Sailing roundtrip from Papeete (Tahiti’s capital and international gateway) on more than a dozen dates from July-December 2020, this tall-masted-ship offers an exhilarating sailing experience as it visits Bora Bora, Moorea, Raiatea, Taha’a and Huahine. Fares start at $4,399 per person, including airfare from Los Angeles and one-night pre-cruise hotel accommodations.

The 332-passenger MV Paul Gauguin is also a small ship, but it adds an onboard blend of Tahitian music and dance and French cuisine via a gourmet menu in La Veranda restaurant by Paris chef Jean-Pierre Vigato. In 2020, check out the 7-night Society Islands and Tahiti Iti cruises, which spend two days anchored in Bora Bora lagoon and also visit Huahine, Taha’a and Moorea as well as Tahiti Iti, the smaller landmass connected to Tahiti. Fares start at $4,795 per person, including airfare from Los Angeles or San Francisco.

Tasmania

Bay of Fires
Tasmania’s Bay of Fires is a popular spot for campers, surfers and people who simply want to appreciate the local wildlife. Shutterstock

This isolated island state located off of Australia’s southeast coast offers something for almost everyone: Gorgeous scenery and abundant wildlife (its national parks are inhabited by wallabies, wombats, and yes, Tasmanian Devils), boutique wineries and cheese-makers, and historic sites such as Hobart harbor and the former penal colony at Port Arthur. Two cruise lines offering itineraries that include two port calls in Tasmania are Holland America and Princess.

Holland America’s 13- 14-, or 15-day New Zealand and Australia itineraries on the mid-sized Noordam, Marsdam or Oosterdam are scheduled throughout 2020 (in February, March, October, November and December) and are a great value. Most of these cruises, which in addition to visiting Tasmania, also explore the North and South Islands of New Zealand and coastal Australia, call spend a full day each in the charming capital of Hobart and Port Arthur. Fares start at $1,187 per person.

Princess Cruises has an 8-night Tasmania Cruise roundtrip from Sydney (Feb. 4-12, 2020) on its 3,560-passenger Majestic Princess, which debuted in 2017. The ship spends a full day at Port Arthur, overnights in Hobart, does a day of scenic cruising along the Freycinet Peninsula and also calls on Melbourne. Fares start at $699 per person.

Easter Island

Ahu Tongariki
Ahu Tongariki is the largest ahu on Easter Island. Shutterstock

It may be just a tiny speck in the South Pacific, but Easter Island (aka Rapa Nui) is on a whole lot of bucket lists—and for good reason. Ranked among the world’s most remote islands, it’s home to about 900 giant stone moai statues carved by Polynesian settlers 600-1,000 years ago. Book a cruise to see the quarry where they were created and learn how they were transported and posed in groups all around this 63-square-mile island, now governed by Chile. You can get there in 2020 aboard cruises by Regent Seven Seas and Princess.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers an 18-night Papeete, Tahiti to Lima, Peru itinerary aboard luxurious 490-passenger Sevens Seas Navigator (April 7-25, 2020) that mixes all-inclusive pampering and adventure—and checks off both Easter Island and Bora Bora in the process. The cruise embarks in Tahiti and in addition to Bora Bora visits four other islands in French Polynesia, and then navigates east across the South Pacific to call on Easter Island for two days before reaching Lima. Fares start at $13,199 per person, including airfare, shore excursions, open bar and gratuities.

If your budget is more modest, opt for 2,200-passenger Island Princess. Book quickly and you can still nab an inside or ocean-view stateroom for the 25-night Andes & South America itinerary, departing Fort Lauderdale on January 9, 2020 and arriving in Santiago Chile on February 3, 2020. It spends one day on Easter Island, transits the Panama Canal (another bucket-list experience) and visits 8 ports in five South American countries. Fares from $2,599 per person.

Santorini

Red Beach

The Greek Isles are full of mystique but few of them captivate as fully as Santorini, where whitewashed villages cling to black volcanic cliffs encircling an ancient caldera now filled with sapphire-hued seawater. Yes, it’s photogenic, but local wines, authentic Greek cuisine and sublime sunsets also add to the island’s allure. Many cruise lines offer itineraries that call on Santorini, including Celebrity and Oceania.

Celebrity’s 10-night Venice, Turkey & Greek Isles itinerary aboard 2,170-passenger Celebrity Constellation, which is scheduled for a complete refurbishment in May 2020, is offered in June, July and August 2020 and spends a generous 12 hours in Santorini. The cruise begins and ends in Venice and includes calls on Corfu, Crete and Mykonos as well as Athens and Kusadasi, Turkey. Fares start at $1,729 per person.

Oceania has 17 itineraries that call on Santorini in 2020, including the 11-night Legacies & Legends aboard 1,250-passenger Oceania Riviera from Rome to Athens (May 9-May 20, 2020). This cruise packs in nine ports in Italy, Greece, Croatia and Turkey, with 10 hours to explore Santorini. Fares start at $4,499 per person.

Borneo

Sibuan Island

What makes Borneo a dream island? Well, at 287,000 square miles, it’s the world’s third largest—divided three ways between Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei—but it’s also home to 11,000 species of flowering plants and 700 species of trees. Above all, it’s one of of only two places in the world where orangutans can be found in the wild, inhabiting the forests in the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak. Azamaraoffers a pre- or post-cruise land excursion to see these magnificent creatures.

Better still, with one particular itinerary you can experience not only Borneo but also Bali and Tasmania. Azamara’s 18-night Australia & Bali Voyage aboard 694-passenger Azamara Journey overnights in Bali, but since it embarks on March 24, 2020 in Sydney, guests can arrive a few days early to fly to Tasmania and explore. Then, after the cruise ends in Singapore, they can book Azamara’s 4-night post-cruise land program, In Search of Orangutans in Borneo. Cruise fares start at $3,025 per person and the land program at $2,759 per person.

Bali

Kelingking Beach

Cruisers who enjoy local culture–music, dance, arts & crafts and religious traditions—will love the rhythms, colors and rituals of this Indian Ocean island. While the island is part of Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country, most Balinese are Hindu, a religion known for its abundant gods and goddesses, mystical temples and daily offerings. Add in talented artisans, pampering spas, verdant rice paddies and even a sacred monkey forest and Bali has its own special allure. Many cruise lines call on Bali, but these two itineraries from Viking and Seabourn are standouts.

With Viking’s 12-night Bangkok, Bali & Beyond on 930-passenger Viking Orion (April 5-17, 2020), guests can arrive several days early to explore Bali on their own—or add on one of Viking’s 2-4-night pre-cruise extensions—before boarding and sailing to several ports on Java followed by Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. Fares start at $4,599 per person.

Seabourn’s 10-night Gems of the Java Sea aboard 600-passenger Seabourn Encore (April 7-17, 2020) from Bali to Singapore offers an overnight in Bali to start plus a call on a second Balinese port, Celukan Bawang. There are also two port calls on the Indonesian island of Java and one on Surabaya, as well as another bucket-list spot: Komodo Island, home to the Komodo dragon. Fares start at $3,999 per person.

The Seychelles

Anse Source D'Argent

With their white-sand beaches, distinctive rock formations, and unique flora and fauna—from the sensual coco de mer palm to the lumbering Alhambra tortoise—the Seychelles islands are ideal for travelers looking to unwind amid some of nature’s most spectacular scenery. A great option for exploring this Indian Ocean paradise is offered by Crystal Cruises.

Enjoy a relaxing, all-inclusive yacht experience aboard 62-passenger Crystal Esprit on one of six 7-night Mahe/Eden Island Marina Roundtrip itineraries (available January-March, 2020) that sail from the main island, Mahe, and visit six other Seychelles islands. Fares start at $3,749 per person.
