Sonesta
There are few places as great to experience this island from than the pair of Sonesta Resorts properties. Sonesta Resort

Sint Maarten
At only 37 square miles, this isn’t the largest island in the Caribbean. But it is certainly one of the most beautiful. Bronwyn Knight

Few places in the Caribbean are as captivating and inspirational as the elevated deck and winding paths on St. Maarten’s Sentry Hill. The main attraction here is the steepest zipline in the region—possibly the entire world, according to its operators—but you can spend hours, probably even an entire afternoon, wandering from corner to corner and enjoying arguably the most incredible views any island has to offer.

What makes the sights so special here is how clearly you can see St. Maarten’s neighbors. Anguilla, St. Barth, Saba, and St. Eustatius all appear so close that you’ll think you can swim to them, but what I took away from my first time on this hill was the importance of this one particular island. Not just because it serves as a gateway to other islands—its legendary airport on Maho Beach is a crucial hub—but because it is their centerpiece.

Each destination offers something spectacular, sure—St. Barth certainly has its own legacy and reputation that puts in the upper echelon for luxury travelers. But St. Maarten simply does it all, including bounce back stronger than ever from natural disasters and acts of God. Having recently visited and fallen head-over-heels in love with the Dutch side of this unique two-nation island (J’aime aussi le côté Français), it’s time to put the spotlight on the things that make St. Maarten so special and especially the things this island does so well.

The People

Ruby Bute and Denicio Wyatte
Ruby Bute (left) is St. Maarten’s most famous artist, and this is an island loaded with creativity. Denicio Wyatte leads tours of the Spaceless Gardens, which works within the community to teach sustainability. Bronwyn Knight

We talk so much about beaches, resorts, luxurious amenities, food, views, etc. that we often overlook the glue that binds them all together: the people. St. Maarten is known as “The Friendly Island,” and you won’t be there an hour before you know why. From the moment I sat down for a post-flight lunch at The Captain’s Rib Shack, I could tell this is an island that takes hospitality seriously, and if I didn’t eventually beg them to stop recommending food, someone would have to roll me up Sentry Hill.

Typically, wherever I travel, I believe I’ll meet one person who exemplifies the soul of that island; however, here I met three people. First, there is Ruby Bute. I don’t know if I can do this incredible artist justice with my words but having the opportunity to visit her studio and talk to her about her life, talent, and passions, as well as the inspiration she’s had on St. Maarten’s burgeoning art scene, showed me that there is limitless promise to her home.

The others are Denicio Wyatte and Sunil Vaswani, who both represent different aspects of St. Maarten’s future. The former is the incredibly charming and downright brilliant director of the Spaceless Gardens, a small but plentiful farm that serves not only as a source of fresh ingredients for local chefs, but also education for the community—especially the children—on the importance of sustainable agriculture and how it can make their island better and stronger.

Vaswani, on the other hand, has sacrificed a lot to fulfill his dream of showing St. Maarten’s promise to the rest of the world. In early 2019, he opened the Caribbean Brewing Company in Point Blanche, and in 2021 his Dutch Blonde Ale became the island’s first-ever to win silver at the London Beer Competition, immediately propelling it to the best craft beer in the entire Caribbean. This enthusiastic entrepreneur has since opened the Dutch Blonde Beach Bar, where guests can enjoy the brewery’s five beers and great food with beachside food, and his latest source of pride is the region’s first and only escape room (at which I currently hold the record time).

Next up? A speakeasy with craft cocktails. All because he thinks St. Maarten can and should be the biggest playground in the Caribbean. If anything, it’s destined to be one of the most talked about.

The Food

Sexy Beef
Ask a local for a lunch recommendation and it will most likely be Sexy Beef, home to mouth-watering satay dishes. Islands/Bronwyn Knight

There is A LOT to be said of St. Maarten’s culinary scene, and this will hardly be the only time I write about it. To say that a person could gain a lot of weight here would be an understatement, because I wanted to stop and try every lolo (kind of like a food truck) that I spotted, and I wouldn’t have been able to try half of them if I’d stayed a week.

One lolo that everyone talks about to an almost religious degree is Sexy Beef, which is not, as I initially thought, a butcher shop by day and gentlemen’s club by night. Instead, named after the owner’s affectionate nickname given by her boyfriend, it is the spot where I tried steak, chicken, and pork satays—and also sipped one of the best margaritas I have had anywhere in the Caribbean—and now there are nights when I am staring out the window, thinking about the world, and wondering why I can’t have meat drenched in peanut sauce every day for the rest of my life.

Other lolos lack the name appeal of Sexy Beef but still share the same devotion to simple food done very well. For example, there’s a truck on Longwall Road, across from a car dealership, that serves delicious beef and chicken patties. The name? No clue. I’m not even sure it had one, but I haven’t stopped thinking about my special “Patty Place.”

This isn’t to say there aren’t five-star, high-end, romantic meals to enjoy as well. Book a reservation at Sale e Pepe and prepare to be treated on your first visit like you’re returning for the tenth time. Chef Davide, like a lot of the talented people I met, was lured to St. Maarten for work more than two decades ago, and a combination of success and love convinced him to stay and bring the flavors of Sicily to Simpson Bay. There’s a lot of great Italian food in the Caribbean, but I’ve never seen a menu as extensive as his. It’s truly indicative of this island’s devotion to the “something for everyone” philosophy.

The Sights

Sentry Hill
The observation decks at the top of Sentry Hill are marked with signs that tell visitors a little bit about the islands they can see, and even on cloudy days the visibility is amazing. Just don’t blink on the zipline, or you might miss the best views. Islands

The journey to the top of Sentry Hill begins with an important visit to the Emilio Wilson Museum, where guests will learn about the life of Trace Wilson and her descendant for whom this fascinating property was named. Learning about any island’s history will make you appreciate it so much more, but here it is enhanced by the opportunity to take the Soualiga Sky Explorer to the top—after a quick, thrilling ride on the schooner—and look at this majestic destination with and compared to her surroundings.

This is hardly the only spot for awe-inspiring moments in St. Maarten, though. For example, guests who stay at Divi Little Bay can take a quick hike to Fort Amsterdam to imagine the cannons roaring, and most island tours will stop at Bell’s Lookout Point on Cole Bay Hill to appreciate the views from beneath the flag. Don’t even discount the idea of a long stroll through Philipsburg, checking out the shops and admiring the charm of the old Dutch architecture. (For the most Instagram-friendly shots, pop through the lobby of the Holland House, where the hotel’s stylish design makes the awesome stretch of sand even more stunning.)

Some of the best views also come from the water. Book a catamaran tour with Pyratz Gourmet Sailing and other Caribbean boat rides might be ruined forever. The young French couple that operates this company plays magnificent host to small groups, serving delicious snacks, cocktails, and meals that are made onboard, while showing everyone some of the most beautiful locations around the island. Just try not to get too jealous of any massive yachts anchored near La Samanna on the French side.

horses
The sunset champagne ride at Seaside Nature Park is great for both romance and learning a little more about St. Maarten in an intimate setting. Bronwyn Knight

But if you want a strong blend of people, serenity, adventure, and natural beauty, book a trail and beach horseback ride with Lucky Stables at Seaside Nature Park. Better yet, make it the two-hour champagne sunset ride and bask in the glory of what residents call the best sunset in the Caribbean, all while learning about St. Maarten from one of the charismatic trainers. (And if you end up riding the mare named Magic, make sure she’s nowhere near Lucky, because those two will just do whatever the heck they want.)

Oh, and the best sight of all? The airplanes landing over Maho Beach. Visitors will obviously want to get down to the sand to experience this legendary setting, but the best way to watch is from a table at the Sunset Beach Bar. Grab a cheeseburger and a marg and have the phones rolling to catch each aircraft as it lands, because it never fails to blow your Instagram followers away.

The Accommodations

Divi Little Bay’s beach
Divi Little Bay’s beach is about as good at it gets for travelers looking to unwind. Islands

The hardest part of any trip is deciding where to stay, and on St. Maarten it’s all about preferences. The all-inclusive crowd, particularly fun foodies, will be pleased with Divi Little Bay Beach Resort’s location, first and foremost, but also everything we’ve come to expect from this brand. Grab a Guavaberry Punch from Gizmo’s and find a chair on the beach for spending a morning and/or afternoon with your toes in the sand before a night of seaside karaoke and dancing.

Kids will be in heaven at Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, the island’s largest all-inclusive option, as it boasts the exciting Aqua Park, where little Caribbean travelers can tire themselves out at the Beach House Kids Club and on water slides. Adults can escape to Casino Royale and the Serenity Spa before everyone meets up again for dinner at one of the many excellent dining options.

Les Jardin de Bellevue
The infinity pool is the cherry on top at Les Jardin de Bellevue, one of the rental properties managed by Jennifer’s Vacation Villas. Bronwyn Knight

For longer stays with bigger groups, or anyone seeking extra privacy, a rental house will make guests feel like they practically live there. Jennifer’s Vacation Villas, for example, offers a wide variety of options, from one-bedroom beach apartments to the palatial and extraordinary Les Jardin de Bellevue, which, with up to eight bedrooms, is so big it feels like a resort. For the ultimate family celebration, choose the five-bedroom Caribbean Blue beach villa and then see if you can ever leave the infinity pool. Little challenges like that make for even better vacations.

The Future

Maho Beach
Maho Beach has long been St. Maarten’s most notable draw, but there is so much beyond this legendary sand. Bronwyn Knight

The story of how St. Maarten and St. Martin came to settle on a border is a fun one, even if some people doubt the authenticity of every detail (hey, you try walking 18 miles with nothing to drink but gin and see how much ground you cover). What it tells us, though, is that not much has changed in more than 350 years—this is still an island that operates on cooperation over competition.

When it was devastated by Hurricanes Irma, Jose, and Maria within a span of two weeks in 2017, the island suffered more than $3 billion in damages and losses. Missteps and mistakes in recovery, as well as finger-pointing and “drama” within the government, led to confusion and despair. Some places would have never recovered, at least not to where they were prior to the storms. But St. Maarten isn’t “some place.” Residents took it upon themselves to help each other, to prepare and deliver food, and round up tools and workers to make crucial repairs to roofs, to make homes livable and reopen stores and businesses again.

In that effort and camaraderie, many people saw an opportunity to raise St. Maarten even higher. Why settle for being a charming island where travelers stop before connecting to St. Barth or Anguilla? Why not be their destination in the first place? Since that unfathomable hurricane season, the resorts are back, more amenity-packed than ever, the tours and excursions are in full swing, and the people have an energy that can only be described as infectious.

Now is the time for people to fall in love with St. Maarten, because tomorrow she’s going to be something far more spectacular than anyone ever imagined.

St. Maarten
St. Maarten is an emerging destination and a big part of the allure is the amazing food. Bronwyn Knight

In case you haven’t heard, St. Maarten has some pretty amazing food. In fact, there are so many great restaurants, bars, and lolos that it’s practically impossible to dine at every “must-visit” spot in one vacation, unless you’re prepared to ruin all that beach bod work in a matter of days (although, it might be worth it). This year alone, I have recommended St. Maarten to friends and family more than any other destination because, as I tell everyone, “You just have to try Sexy Beef.”

People on every island will insist they have the best food, but St. Maarten’s claim to be the “Culinary Capital of the Caribbean” exists with unlimited and unflinching confidence. And if experts of gastronomy (gastronomers?) aren’t convinced, they’ll have the best chance yet to eat as much food as humanly possible when the Dutch side’s culinary month, known as St. Maarten Flavors, kicks off on November 1.
All month long, 15 restaurants (and counting) will showcase their specialties with prix fix menus, so visitors just might be able to fit the best of the best into one week on the island. Fit into their swimsuits after? That’s another question. Among the participating establishments are Aziana, Bold Buddha, Bovin Steakhouse, Emilio’s, Infinity, Jax Steakhouse, La Patrona, Pure Ocean, SALT, Topper’s, Three Amigos, and Veranda Market & Bistro. Also included are two of my personal favorites: Ocean Lounge at Holland House and the Dutch Blonde Beach Bar.

Holland House
We’re not sure what we love more about Holland House: the views or the food. Bronwyn Knight

“The SHTA is thrilled to promote the many outstanding culinary experiences prepared by our high-end restaurants as well as our unique streetside lolos and food trucks,” explained Wyb Meijer, Executive Director of the St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association. “Our culinary offerings are as widely represented as our population, with so many unbelievable Flavors competing for our next meal. St. Maarten Flavors will allow you to indulge in the best that St. Maarten has to offer at affordable pricing, giving you a perfect reason to dine out and try new places with family and friends.”

What will make this especially inclusive is the set price point, as it will allow all travelers to have a chance to dine at places they may have otherwise missed in any other month. And with the island’s immense cultural diversity, guests can expect to discover myriad new tastes as well.

In fairness to the French side, St. Martin will also be showcasing its own immense culinary creativity and talent throughout November. Fete de la Cuisine will take place from November 4-12 and Festival Gastronomie will immediately follow it, running from November 13-30.

Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach
Your friends could do much worse than heading to Cabo for draft day next year. Quivira Los Cabos

We keep hearing (and writing) that “travel is back,” and the popular themes are wellness, workations, and especially long overdue, rescheduled destination weddings. For some people, the reason never matters, but others occasionally need a little nudge like, “It’s National Margarita Day, so don’t you deserve a few days at the JW Marriott Cancun’s lobby bar?” If anything, it helps us treat every vacation like a holiday.

This came up earlier this summer in a conversation with 11 old friends as we debated dates for our fantasy football draft. As we enter year 21 of our league, I pointed out that we hadn’t had a real, in-person draft party in quite some time, so wouldn’t it be fun if we picked a cool destination so we can all catch up?

Turns out that’s a little tougher than we’d have thought. After all, most of us have families and careers, so it’s difficult to plan these kinds of trips for just a one- or two-day escape. “So, let’s make a thing of it,” I insisted. Eyebrows were raised and more questions followed. “Let’s pick a resort in the Caribbean so spouses or entire families can come, fun can be had, and vacation days can be used. Let’s put the party back in draft party!”

Well, it’s still a work in progress. This year’s draft was yet another Zoom call, but if I could head somewhere tropical to waste the 10th overall pick on Alvin Kamara, these are the resorts I’d highly recommend.

Sandals Royal Curaçao

Sandals Royal Curaçao
There’s plenty of ground to cover here, which means guests will always work up an appetite while exploring. Sandals Royal Curaçao

The freshest resort in my mind, the newest property on Curaçao is a great choice for all the best reasons. For starters, the all-inclusive Sandals Royal Curaçao feels like it was designed to entertain groups (adults-only, sorry kids), with dining options and amenities that encourage variety and ensure the word boredom has no meaning.

Want to go big and have a draft that will possibly go viral but certainly be unforgettable? Book multiple Awa Seaside Butler Bungalows and make your selections in one of the private pools as the waves crash nearby. Or grab a few of the tables at the food truck pavilion so everyone can enjoy a variety of food options and the must-have mango margaritas while you laugh at that one guy who always picks the injured player.

And perhaps best of all, Old Quarry’s first hole tee box is just steps from those trucks, so everyone can grab a rental set and keep the fun going on one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful (and challenging) courses.

(Bonus idea: Draft off-site at Bklyn, a bar inspired by New York City’s rap and hip hop culture that also serves some awesome cocktails and snacks—just don’t be loud or you’ll miss the great music.)

W Punta de Mita

E-wow
This eclectic suite definitely puts the wow in E-wow. W Punta de Mita

We all know that villas are immensely popular right now because they allow families and small groups to feel like they’re staying in a home away from home. (Also, they’re typically just flat out cool.) Now, if we’re talking about 10-14 adults, chances are it’s going to be tough to find something that large at a resort. Instead, I’d suggest finding the coolest villa from which to draft, and perhaps allowing the league champion to stay there. (That will probably earn some boos.)

A perfect example is the Extreme Wow (or E-wow) Oceanfront Oasis Suite at W Punta de Mita. This two-bedroom suite is one of the coolest accommodations in this popular Mexican destination, with a plunge pool and jacuzzi, as well as large windows that open to make this feel like a wide-open palace. It is truly fit for royalty… or at least a trophy holder.

Sonesta Maho Beach Resort

Sonesta Maho Beach Resort
This resort is the place to be for travelers of all ages who never want the fun to end. Sonesta Maho Beach Resort, Casino & Spa

When friends ask me for Caribbean travel recommendations right now, my first pick is St. Maarten. Often overlooked as “that place you land” when visiting her neighboring islands, this Dutch slice of paradise has overcome serious adversity in recent years and deserves a spotlight for its emerging creativity. And with its size, style, and family-friendly atmosphere, Sonesta Maho Beach Resort makes for an ideal base camp, especially if kids are coming.

That’s because the Aqua Park, with its three slides, is simply awesome, but adults will also be thrilled with the resort’s massive Oasis pool, which will be the best place to relax the brain before all those difficult decisions are made. The draft, however, would take place off property at the Dutch Blonde Beach Bar, home of the Caribbean’s best beer

Leagues that draw draft order on the night of the event could even use this bar’s escape rooms, with the fastest times earning the earliest picks.

The Buccaneer

Aerial view of The Buccaneer golf course.
Between its incredible views and generous fairways, this is a course any golfer can appreciate. The Buccaneer

Perhaps most recognizable to fans of The Bachelor, this resort is a St. Croix institution. Arriving here feels like you’re checking in to a really fun summer camp, as the spacious property includes a variety of outdoor amenities and activities that will make any group entirely pleased with the choice.

What makes The Buccaneer Beach and Golf Resort (now a part of the Trademark Collection by Wyndham) so enticing is easy—the beaches. Want to relax and catch some rays? Grotto Beach. Want to grab a snorkel or kayak and explore the water? Mermaid Beach. Want nothing but seclusion? That’s Whistle Beach, which is also home to the thing that makes this resort such a good choice: The Beach House. This six-bedroom accommodation is as cool as it gets in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the pool is simply begging to be a draft party location.

After the last pick is made, everyone can tee off from the 18-hole course that boasts magnificent ocean views, and also has some very forgiving holes that will make players of all experience levels feel great about their games.

Aruba Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino

Aruba Marriott Resort
Location is everything and this resort is right in the heart of Aruba’s best activities. Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino

Those of us who have played fantasy football for a long time tend to think about it a lot. Like, sometimes more than anything else. That’s why it wasn’t that unusual that as I enjoyed the incredible Atardi beach dining experience at Aruba Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino, I found myself thinking, “Man, this would be quite a draft spot.” To be fair, though, that goes for a lot of spots on this property, which is why it’s such a good choice.

But, again, if this is the destination, I’m tempted to take the draft festivities off-property, because once you’ve had the Passion-Rita and Long Island-Rita at The West Deck, you’re going to want to live there. That’s not to say the food and drink aren’t terrific at Aruba Marriott—definitely among the best on the island—but it’s fun to explore and find those special places.

Plus, once the shuttle arrives back at the resort, the entire crew can hit the casino for some post-draft gaming.

Marriott Cancun Resort

Marriott Cancun
The food at this beach shack is outstanding, but the mezcal cocktails will keep guests coming back for more. Marriott Cancun

I know a lot of people just want to keep things simple and head to a sports bar for wings and beers while they roast their buddies who chose Kamara over Saquon Barkley and Davante Adams, but you can still do that in a resort setting. Case in point: Marriott Cancun Resort’s Champions Sports Bar, which has TVs in the bar and dining area—ideal for those players who need hints from sports shows while everyone enjoys wings and burgers.

And the bonus is that you’re in Mexico, at one of the most entertaining resorts, so when you’re not drafting, the whole league can eat some of the best quesadillas and guacamole I’ve ever had at the SacBé Beach Shack, or everyone can meet up the final evening for a truly informative and delicious mezcal tasting.

(Yet another bonus is that this hotel is connected to the JW Marriott Cancun, which is home to the lobby bar with 150 margaritas. Even the guy who always finishes in last place can’t complain about that.)

Quivira Los Cabos

A rocky cliffside next to the Quivira Golf Club.
The views here will make everyone forget about their worst draft picks. Quivira Golf Club

If your league mates are bringing families and/or golf clubs, you’ll want to head to the Pacific coast of Mexico and a resort community that is getting better and more exciting by the day. Not only is Quivira Los Cabos home to a course that recently landed on the World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses—it should be top 10, in my opinion—but it boasts an ideal range of accommodations and phenomenal dining options.

Couples who leave the kids at home will want to book rooms at the adults-only Pueblo Bonito Pacifica, which looks like a luxurious sandcastle built on one of the most beautiful beaches in the region. Step it up and stay at the Towers at Pacifica, where adults are spoiled with 24-hour butler service—the only drawback is the constant noise of other couples celebrating the fact that they’re in paradise with no kids.

That’s not to say this isn’t a place for children. Quite the opposite, as families will love the space and amenities offered at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach. And if you’re in that villa mindset, Pueblo Bonito Montecristo Estates offers three-bedroom units with private infinity pools. There’s not a bad choice to be made here.

As far as drafting, I have two ideas: head to The After at Quivira, a truly fulfilling sports bar setting, or stay outside and enjoy the Cabo evening while grabbing snacks and treats at La Choya Wandering Kitchen. Then celebrate a decent draft with a round at the epic Quivira Golf Club, for which Jack Nicklaus truly outdid himself.

Reynolds Lake Oconee

clay shooting
Groups can even have private lessons from the property’s coaches. Reynolds Lake Oconee

All this talk about golf makes me think of only one U.S. resort community: Reynolds Lake Oconee. With five courses that guests can play (the sixth is private), it’s already one of the best getaway choices for families and small groups, but there’s an entirely different amenity here that would make for the best fantasy draft setting imaginable. Of course, I mean the Sandy Creek Sporting Grounds, which offers a variety of exciting outdoor activities, including archery, fishing, and an off-road course with awesome Land Rovers.

But the reason I’ve included everyone’s favorite southern vacation destination is the sporting clays—aka “Golf with a Shotgun”—which could make for the best draft pick lottery your league has ever considered. Each team manager could meet at the five-stand, which is a compact clay course, and the best scores dictate the draft order. An especially clever league member might even slip resident shooting champion Jasper Copelan a few bucks to make it a little easier.

As for accommodations, the Ritz-Carlton Reynolds Lake Oconee exists as one of the most luxurious lodges in the country, but families will definitely enjoy the various cottages in the National Club and The Landing, if they’re available.

10 Restaurants Every Foodie Must Visit in St. Maarten https://www.islands.com/caribbean/st-maarten-best-restaurants/ Wed, 11 May 2022 15:53:54 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=44765 The Dutch side of this Caribbean paradise is packed with delicious and creative culinary experiences. But these places top the list for first timers.

There’s so much to explore in St. Maarten, and that includes the culinary scene. Bronwyn Knight

It’s a good thing that airlines are so stingy with snacks these days. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been so bent on eating as soon as I landed at Princess Julianna International Airport on a recent visit to St. Maarten. But when my rumbling stomach shook the car—a slight exaggeration—my host smiled as she told me, “I have just the place for you, and it’s not that far.”

Turns out this was a running theme during my visit. Every Caribbean island has great food, but not all of them have so much good food that every meal has “just the place.” St. Maarten is packed with so many options that we’ll never eat at the same restaurant twice (if we don’t want to), but the problem then, of course, is that having too many options means not having enough time to try them all.

Oh, the perils of tropical travel.

Some people live under the misguided assumption that St. Maarten is simply the place they stop before traveling to one of the neighboring islands. But foodies need to know that this is the place to be. Even when it comes to snacks and treats, guests will love spots like the Amsterdam Cheese Store, the Coffee Lounge in the heart of Philipsburg, and basically any of the lolos (especially Cindy’s Roti, but there’s also a patty place on Longwall Rd. that is great despite not having a name on it). If you need a jumping off point, you will not go wrong with these 10 restaurants.

The Captain’s Rib Shack

rib shack
Warning: The chicken and ribs combo will tempt visitors to nap. Bronwyn Knight/Islands

Deboard the airplane, make your way through the baggage claim, flash a nice smile to the customs agent, and make your way to this BBQ joint right outside the airport. Where do you even start with the menu, though? I chose the ribs because it’s right there in the name of the restaurant, but also because these are no ordinary ribs… they’re Orgasmic Ribs.

I won’t say if they lived up to the name—this is a family site, after all—but I say with confidence that the tray was empty by the time we left. And if you’re not hungry after the long flight, it’s also a great place to grab lunch before heading out on a boat tour.

Sexy Beef

Sexy Beef
Sexy Beef’s mouthwatering satay pairs well with a frosty tropical beverage. Bronwyn Knight

The crown jewel of my St. Maarten culinary experience. From the moment I arrived on this island, I was repeatedly told that I needed to eat at Sexy Beef. Is it a gentleman’s club with a kitchen? Is the food eaten while Barry White’s greatest hits are played? Is the meat wearing lingerie? These are just some of the terrible jokes I made, but it turns out the name has a special meaning: it’s the nickname given to the owner by her boyfriend.

Romance aside, the food at this incredibly popular lolo (this place goes off on weekends) is simple yet spectacular. In fact, I had no choice but to order the steak, chicken, and pork satay, just so I could give myself a crash course in meat soaked in peanut sauce. Not a single bite went to waste, and I washed it all down with what I believe to be the best classic margarita in the Caribbean.

Azul

Sonesta Ocean Point Resort
Location is everything. Sonesta Ocean Point Resort

Normally, it’d be mean to include a restaurant from an all-inclusive resort, because unless you’re staying there, you can’t go. Fortunately, Sonesta Ocean Point Resort knows that Azul is quite frankly one of the coolest restaurants in the Caribbean, so it is bringing back The Azul Experience, which invites non-guests to come enjoy this spectacular Mediterranean-inspired menu while also dropping their jaws over the views from both the rooftop and cliffside seating.

It’s hard to say what is more alluring: the food or the fact that Azul seems like it is dangling over the ocean. But believe me that every selection on the menu will have your dinner guests asking for a bite. That’s why I had to eat my roasted duck leg with my arms around the plate like a shield. Also, the menu changes daily so this is definitely a place to visit multiple times, especially if you’re the kind of person who gets really sad (points to self) when they don’t have the fettuccine with calamari.

The Original Fat Boy Jimmy’s

Jimmy's
Crab or chicken? Both, if you’re smart. The Original Fat Boy Jimmy’s

Avid Caribbean travelers know that there’s just something about a Johnny cake that makes a sandwich better. When I arrived on St. Maarten, I made a passing “joke” about how I would one day embark on a quest to find the best hamburger in the Caribbean, and my hosts immediately told me, “It’s here.” They were referring to the magnificent Jimmy Cake Burger from The Original Fat Boy Jimmy’s, which is a basically a landmark on this island. And if you’re feeling frisky, you get the Full House burger with mac and cheese and cole slaw piled on.

But there’s so much more than burgers and BBQ here. Namely, meals like the Fry Crab and the Curry Goat have the locals raving, so don’t be surprised when there’s a mighty long line at this Philipsburg spot.

Sale e Pepe Marina

seafood
Here, the seafood is so fresh you’ll think it was pulled right from the marina. Bronwyn Knight

I have a weird theory that has been percolating for some time: if a restaurant in the Caribbean has some form of “salt” in the name, it is guaranteed to be good. My hypothesis began when I dined at Salt in Turks and Caicos, and it grew stronger most recently at Sal the Kitchen in Curaçao. Sandwiched in between was a meal I will never forget at Sale e Pepe Marina, a stunningly fantastic spot right on the water.

While the food was amazing—I almost cried as I finished the last bite of my Tagliolini al Tartufo—what surprised me was the size of the menu. It was downright daunting choosing from the long list of pasta dishes, not to mention the separate pages for meat and fish main courses. Save a little room for dessert, too, because the tiramisu might look small, but mamma mia it packs quite the punch.

Dutch Blonde Beach Bar

Dutch pancake
Dutch pancakes just taste so much better. Bronwyn Knight

You’ll come here for the award-winning beer, but you’ll stay for the excellent bar food. The namesake beer ascended to the throne as the best in the Caribbean when it won silver at the 2021 London Spirits Competition, but owner Sunil Vaswani’s establishment is about way more than the drinks.

At Dutch Blonde Beach Bar, guests can enjoy awesome views of the adjacent beach while enjoying another great island burger or the phenomenal fish and shrimp tacos. But when in the Dutch Caribbean, do as the Dutch do and order one of the most delicious pancakes in town. Wash it all down with one of the five outstanding beers and then try your hardest to beat my record for the on-site escape room.

Ocean Lounge Bar and Restaurant

ribeye
This ribeye pairs very well with the Martell Old Fashion. Bronwyn Knight

If you’re not staying at the Holland House Beach Hotel, you’ll at least want to make time to stop in for dinner at the Ocean Lounge. Creativity and freshness collide in this stylish restaurant’s menu, and there isn’t an incorrect choice when it comes to the seafood. But as my friends raved about the Lobster Pasta and Black Sea Bass, I just had to dive into the ribeye with the delicious mushroom sauce. It always feels like a crime not ordering the fresh seafood, but even in a prison cell I’d have a smile from that cut.

Oenophiles will especially love the award-winning wine cellar and extensive list, while tequila enthusiasts will be in heaven as they start with the Mango Patrón Margarita and finish strong with the Tajín Margarita. And should you heed my advice and order that killer steak, it pairs oh so well with the Martell Old Fashion.

Emilio’s

Emilio’s Sunday brunch
Guests come from all over the island to enjoy the celebrated Sunday brunch here. Emilio’s

If you’re visiting St. Maarten, the observation decks and zip lines at Rainforest Adventure Park are mandatory. Even if you only take the chair lift to the top to appreciate the views of the neighboring islands, it needs to be done. But what’s on the ground here is equally important, as visitors can check out the Emilio Wilson Museum to learn about the incredible man and the property’s history.

Located in the plantation’s old boiler house, Emilio’s obviously also pays tribute to the estate’s late owner, but it’s also where travelers will enjoy some of the best meals on either side of the island and probably well beyond. The tapas dishes are vast and ideal for groups that love to share—don’t be surprised if people get greedy with the charred garlic octopus, though—while the main courses, like the rosemary rack of lamb and snapper en papilotte, serve as centerpieces for that final romantic evening or a family vacation no one will soon forget.

Pyratz Gourmet Sailing

Pyratz gourmet catamaran cruise in St Maarten
Spend time on the stunning water while enjoying delicious culinary treats. Pyratz

I’m cheating here just a little, but I can’t ignore the exceptional food and drinks prepared and served by the immensely polite and charming crew that operates this catamaran excursion. Guests especially rave about Captain Max’s specialty: fresh grilled lobster. How fresh? I’m talking, look down in the water, snatch that lobster, and soon enough—voila! One of the best seafood dishes you’ll ever have on water or land.

And if you’re lucky enough to have Alisson as the first mate, she makes a phenomenal gin cocktail that will make everyone feel like royalty as they raise a toast to the other boats anchored in spots like Long Bay and Tintamarre.

Sunset Beach Bar

Maho Beach
Of course the food looks good, but this place is all about the view. Bronwyn Knight

If your trip begins at the Rib Shack not far from the airport’s exit, then it should end at one of the most iconic places on the island. Sunset Beach Bar sits right next to Maho Beach, where visitors gather in droves to stand beneath the airplanes as they descend upon the runway. It’s inarguably one of the top spots in the world for selfies, but if you don’t want to get sand all over your feet before departure, a seat at the restaurant is just as good.

In fact, I think it’s better, because this joint advertises “the best burgers on the island,” and the Sunset Signature—bacon, avocado, onion crisps, pico de gallo, sriracha aioli, and American cheese—is absolutely fantastic. Just the thing any traveler needs before a three-hour flight home, but you’ll probably want to leave a little room for the pretzels, too.

Mango Mai Tai
Everyone loves to “discover” a creative cocktail like the Mango Mai Tai at Sandals Royal Bahamian. Sandals Royal Bahamian

If the last two years have shown us anything, it’s that a lot of travelers are going to be in for huge surprises when they return to their favorite Caribbean islands. So many properties and businesses have taken time and poured considerable resources into renovations and expansions, which means there are even more options for incredible vacations across every island.

And when it comes to food and drinks, many of these places don’t get the credit they deserve for their ingenuity in developing unique menus that are jam-packed with concoctions that are as fun to look at as they are to eat and sip. Best of all, local culture, history, and ingredients play a huge role in all of this, so it can be as educational as it is delicious.

Need some help loading your itineraries? Here are nine Caribbean bars that are already the talk of the town. Some we have recently visited, and some, well, we might just be sitting on the bar stool next to you, trying our first treat. Either way, it’s time to be excited.

Mr. B’s Bar, Sandals Royal Bahamian

Guava Bubbles
The benefit of ordering a drink as pretty as the Guava Bubbles is it looks nice in every photo. Sandals Royal Bahamian

Speaking of major renovations, Sandals Royal Bahamian is ready to show off the astounding results of a $55 million makeover, and while it’s not the main draw, the new Mr. B’s Bar is going to mean a lot to this brand’s immensely loyal guests. Mr. B is, of course, the late Gordon “Butch” Stewart, the visionary who turned two run-down Jamaican hotels into an all-inclusive empire built on surpassing a guest’s every expectation.

Adorned with old photos of Stewart, this modern yet unmistakably Caribbean hangout showcases a variety of incredible new cocktails with delightful names, from the Guava Bubbles (above) to the Banana Bread Old Fashioned. But no visit will be complete without Mr. B’s Old Fashioned, which is infused with local coffee bitters. It’s perfect for toasting the man, the myth, and the legend.

And for cocktails with a view, venture outdoors to Sandals Royal Bahamian’s new Bar at Coconut Grove, serving up cocktails as colorful as they are tropical, like the Dragon in the Coconut and Mango Mai Tai (top).

Zala Gastro Lounge, Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort

zala cocktail
Colorful, creative cocktails like the Par’i Mondi make this lobby bar a very popular spot. Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort

To say that Curaçao’s culinary scene is booming would be an understatement—the food here has always been amazing. Between the spectacular Truk’i Pans, the swaggerific restaurants popping up throughout downtown Willemstad, and even the iguana soup at Immanuel Place, a visitor could spend weeks enjoying the best meals without repeating venues. So, it says a lot that Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort’s Zala Gastro Lounge is viewed by visitors and locals as a place to be.

If the purpose for swinging by is simply to enjoy a few cocktails before hitting the town, people will be thrilled by the delicious simplicity of the Fresku and Par’i Mondi cocktails—and they’ll also love the showmanship that comes with ordering a Smokey Jack or Den Numbia. But don’t sleep on the food. This an island that needs to be visited with a healthy appetite, because the Pollo Mechada Arepitas and Crispy Brussel Sprouts are the kinds of bar snacks that’ll change a person’s expectations of appetizers forever.

Bklyn, Curaçao

Brooklyn Rumble
No sleep til Brooklyn and don’t sleep on this Bklyn, where guests can sip a Brooklyn Rumble while admiring the stellar wall art. Islands

Downtown Willemstad’s restaurant scene deserves its own feature story (and will have it very soon) because the efforts and creations of the island’s brightest young minds cannot be overstated, especially as they persevered through multiple lockdowns. One shining example is the uber-hip Bkyln, for which the owner draws inspiration from New York City’s hip-hop and rap culture in everything from the cocktails to the wallpaper (designed by Mike D of the Beastie Boys and available on Flavor Paper).

Every cocktail on this menu should be tried, but for visitors who love the culture vibes, the obvious choices are the Brooklyn Rumble and especially the Lil’ Kim. Don’t let the name of the latter fool you—just like the pint-sized rapper, this cocktail packs a mean punch. And it pairs oh-so-well with the magnificent bao buns and pan ku patu.

Shellona, St. Barth

skirt steak
Beware the Captain Barbosa cocktail, as this bourbon and cucumber delight is deceptively refreshing. Islands

There isn’t an amenity, experience, or square inch of Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf that disappoints, and that certainly includes Fouquet’s, the on-site restaurant and bar, which is one of the best places for a cocktail on an island that constantly redefines extravagance. If it’s not the view or the amazing food, it’s the edible perfume that is sprayed on top of the drink for an extra special flavor enhancer.

But the other spot that must be visited is a short walk down the hill, right beside the intimate Shell Beach. In fact, Shellona is named for its ideal location, and it is also where hotel guests can stop in for arguably the most creative cocktails on St. Barth. Bold flavors highlight the signature selections on this awesome menu, and each drink pairs oh so well with everything from the mini mahi mahi tacos to the mouth-watering chimichurri steak.

Dutch Blonde Beach Bar, St. Maarten

Dutch Blonde
Enjoy a round of the Caribbean’s best beer while enjoying a beach breeze or trying to solve the clues to bring about a mobster’s demise. Islands

Cocktails aren’t for everyone, and sometimes a weary traveler just wants a delicious beer with views for days. In that case, Dutch Blonde Beach Bar is not only located on stunning Great Bay Beach in Philipsburg, but it also serves the best beer in the Caribbean. Dutch Blonde Ale earned that distinction when it was awarded a silver medal at the 2021 London Beer Competition, besting all other entries from this tropical region. But if you need our expert opinion: it is absolutely delicious.

The food is also fantastic, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg here. Owner and founder Sunil Vaswani is one of the island’s most enthusiastic and optimistic creators, so he doesn’t just want to serve great beer—he wants to provide experiences. Right now, that includes St. Maarten’s first and only escape room (at which I hold the record time) that will soon expand with new themes, and it’ll eventually be joined by a speakeasy. Big things are happening here.

Caribar, Caribe Hilton Puerto Rico

caribar
The birthplace of the piña colada should be on every cocktail lover’s travel wish list. Caribe Hilton

Almost 70 years ago, a bartender named Ramón “Monchito” Marrero messed with some cocktail ingredients and inadvertently became a hospitality G.O.A.T. His new welcome beverage for the Caribe Hilton was non-alcoholic, but it was the foundation of what would become one of the most beloved cocktails ever made: the piña colada. Naturally, the history of the drink alone makes the hotel’s Caribar one of the island’s must-visit establishments.

Obviously, there are other drinks to enjoy here, but anyone who loves to experience local culture and history will appreciate the chance to taste the evolution of the piña colada. And it’s not just at this hotel. The great location means it’s just minutes from some of Old San Juan’s best bars and restaurants, where bright young minds are also serving up new twists on the classic cocktail.

Monkey Business, Resorts World Bimini

cocktails and seafood
Cold cocktails and fresh seafood is everyone’s favorite form of monkeying around. Resorts World Bimini

Between establishments like Stuart’s (a go-to for conch and lobster) and Edith’s Pizza (where lobster is an amazing pie topping), Bimini is one of the more underrated spots for Bahamian cuisine. That makes Resorts World Bimini an ideal base for exploring and appreciating the regional perks, but don’t forget to enjoy one of the best spots at this sprawling property: the Monkey Business rooftop bar.

Of course, it’s impossible to skip when it’s located right next to the rooftop infinity pool, which boasts phenomenal panoramic views of Bimini Bay. This is best done while enjoying the bar’s signature cocktail, the rum-and-fruit-juice Shark Tooth, and a big plate of loaded jerk chicken fries.

Tiki and Co., Bonaire

tiki and co
Step inside for a lesson in local culture and incredibly creative cocktails. Elliott Howell

Fun fact: Bonaire isn’t just for cruise ships and divers. Like its neighbor Curaçao, Bonaire is also experiencing a culinary renaissance, and the coolest spot on the island might just be Tiki and Co. The tropical glassware alone makes it worth the visit, as travelers don’t find too many opportunities to drink from skulls of various sizes and artistic stylings.

Sir Eddy Trenidad returned home to Bonaire to open this bar and make it a cultural institution, teaching guests about his island as they enjoy epic cocktails like the Pandan Banana Colada, Stairway to Ku, and Oaxacan ‘n Talking. And if all goes to plan, his bar will crack the list of the 100 best in the world, proving to everyone that Bonaire is the real deal.

Sky Bar, Sandals Royal Barbados

sky bar
Guests won’t want to leave the infinity pool for long, but it’s worth it. Sandals Royal Barbados

One more round for Mr. B! Not only does this new Sky Bar at Sandals Royal Barbados offer the best views of the St. Lawrence Gap, but it is also a fantastic place to enjoy Sandals’ new 40th anniversary cocktail list. A new twist on a classic drink is nothing mind blowing, but everyone will love having the chance to sip the old and new, side by side, to see just how far we’ve come in terms of creativity.

Whether you’re looking to escape for a relaxing week with friends or much-needed fun in the sun with your family, a spacious private villa is an ideal way to connect with those you love as you enjoy the Caribbean. Better yet, what if that villa offered access to resort amenities, such as on-site restaurants, spas and watersports?

Resort-based villas throughout the Caribbean range from pocketbook-friendly to five-star luxurious and feature amenities many independent, stand-alone villas do not. Here are a dozen top resort-based villa accommodations on eight popular islands.

ACOYA Curacao Resort, Villas and Spa

Some also have a private pool.

Villa guests are welcome to enjoy amenities at the resort (which also offers 148 apartments), including an expansive pool, a five-star dive center and the property’s al fresco restaurant, Brass Boer, whose owner, Jonnie Boer, is a renowned Michelin-starred chef.

Coral Beach Club, St. Maarten

The villas’ backyards are steps from white-sand Oyster Beach and it’s just a 10-minute drive to the capital, Phillipsburg, where duty-free shopping and eclectic dining await. The villas all have private pools, full-size kitchens (both indoor and outdoor) and complete access to the neighboring Oyster Bay Beach Resort’s amenities, which include an infinity pool, spa, fitness center, restaurant and bar.

Villas at Simpson Bay Resort, St. Maarten

Round Hill Hotel and Villas, Jamaica

Round Hill Hotel and Villas
These villas have been occupied by some extremely famous people, so why not follow in their footsteps? Round Hill Hotel and Villas

Welcoming Jamaica-loving sun-seekers since 1953, 110-acre Round Hill Resort and Villas in Montego Bay is known for its 26 private villas, most located on a lushly landscaped hillside overlooking the sea and each featuring its own Caribbean-style design with a blend of retro-romantic and modern elements. Some come with storied histories (JFK and Jackie stayed in Villa 10, Noel Coward and Errol Flynn in Villa 3, and designer Ralph Lauren, who decorated the resort’s 36 Pineapple House guestrooms, currently owns a villa here).

They range from two to six bedrooms (the exclusive Estate Villa can accommodate up to 14 guests), and feature private pools, spectacular views and dedicated staff. Villa guests can enjoy their privacy or the entire atmospheric resort, with amenities that include two restaurants, bars, a spa and infinity pool.

Private Pool Villas at Cap Juluca, A Belmond Hotel, Anguilla

Set on one of the most photogenic white-sand beaches in the Caribbean, Cap Juluca, A Belmond Hotel, has long lured travelers seeking an escape that combines five-star service and amenities with ultimate privacy. The property’s distinctive white Moorish-style architecture is amplified in its villa accommodations, which range from 1,700 to 5,500 square feet and from Beachfront Plunge Pool Two-Bedroom Casitas to Beachfront Three- or Five-Bedroom Pool Villas—all featuring distinctive interior design, spacious indoor-outdoor bathrooms, private kitchens, direct beach access and a 24-hour villa host.

The resort also has four restaurants, plus private dining options, a spa, tennis courts and watersports.

To be closer to the vivid blue sea, guests can book the unique, four-bedroom Villa Nureyev, constructed in 1970 by the famed Russian dancer with a floating deck surrounded by the ocean. It is located right on the sand near the resort’s Beach Club.

Like guests in the 22 smaller Villa Suites, clustered on a hillside, those staying in both larger villas have access to the property’s award-winning restaurant, stunning infinity pool, private beach club, fitness center and spa.

Altamer’s Blue Diamond Villa, Anguilla

Blue Diamond Villa

Up to 11 guests can sleep in the five-bedroom, seven bath villa and enjoy a beachfront pool and hot tub, an entertainment area, movie theater and private fitness center along with 30 pieces of contemporary art.

Palm Island Resort
When travelers simply want to wake up and put their toes in the sand, this is the place to do it. Palm Island Resort

For that private-island experience that truly feels private, Palm Island Resort has two villas located away from the main resort area, each overlooking the sea on either side of the 135-acre island, and a new two-bedroom villa set to open in the spring. Sea Feathers is set right on the sand and features three bedrooms with airy contemporary décor, while Southern Cross is a two-bedroom villa elevated atop scenic cliffs with an infinity pool and access to a nearby beach.

Both come with a golf cart for easy transport to the resort’s beachfront social heart with its restaurant and watersports. Palm Island, which welcomes guests ages 16 and older, is priced on an all-inclusive basis.

Villas at Four Seasons Resort Nevis

Four Seasons Resort Nevis cabana

Gorgeous golf greens and playful green vervet monkeys are two of the atmospheric perks of a villa stay at the 350-acre, family-friendly Four Seasons Resort Nevis. The property’s family-friendly villas all feature private pools and are most are located on the verdant slopes of Nevis Peak while a few are close to the beach. There are two Plunge Pool Studios, each a one-bedroom cottage nestled amid greenery on the lower slopes, and four Sunset Hill Villas with two-to-five bedrooms, located at higher elevations.

Two Pinney’s Beach Villas feature three and four bedrooms and are a short walk from the beach, while eight Palm Grove Villas have two to six bedrooms and are set around the golf course. Four Seasons Resort Nevis also has four showpiece Estate Homes, ranging from 2,905 to 7,025 square feet—the largest sleeps 10 adults and eight children.

Azzurra Castle at Mount Cinnamon Hotel and Beach Club, Grenada

Mount Cinnamon Hotel
One of the largest accommodations anywhere in the Caribbean, calling this anything but a castle would be misleading. Mount Cinnamon Hotel and Beach Club

And now for something entirely different. Azzurra Castle at Mount Cinnamon Hotel and Beach Club is easily one of the most unique and charming accommodations you’ll find anywhere in the Caribbean. As spacious as it is colorful, it will have guests spending hours after check-in, taking pictures of every nook and cranny, as each room is more fascinating and creative than the next.

At more than 25,000 square feet, guests can get lost in this castle. Up to a dozen friends or family members can stay in the six bedrooms, and they’ll enjoy incredible meals from the on-site cook in two dining areas before retiring to the cinema room for movie night or the small beach for fun under the stars.

Villa Diane, Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf, St. Barth

Floating breakfast
Floating breakfast in the infinity pool is just one of many spoils here. Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf

This newer and extremely popular hotel already sits above Gustavia like a miniature kingdom, and that would make Villa Diane the magnificent castle. This property is already extremely proud of its insanely great views of the island and her surrounding waters, but until a guest has ascended the winding stairs to the top floor’s stylish, spacious living area, no one can truly understand just how picture perfect an experience can be in this unparalleled accommodation.

With five rooms—three of which are suites—this is an ideal situation for the destination wedding of a couple’s dreams. As many as 12 guests will sleep and relax comfortably, with the sprawling patios begging everyone to enjoy the St. Barth sun until it sets, which is another beautiful perk. A hidden kitchen is where one of the resort’s talented chefs will create amazing meals, all while the party lounges in the cherry on top infinity pool.

Saba
Don’t be fooled by Saba’s size. Big things always come in little packages. Saba Tourist Bureau

From the moment our puddle-jumper departs St. Maarten 14 minutes early—a feat almost unheard of when you’re traveling in the Caribbean—it should have been obvious that my visit to Saba would be a decidedly different kind of island idyll.

On the 13-minute afternoon flight, we soar over calm cobalt seas punctuated with the white sails of boats. As the sun descends it transforms the water’s surface into what looks like a rippling sheet of molten silver, and I’m transfixed by the scene. Then, moments later, rising straight above the surface like a lush, mist-cloaked Everest, Saba comes into view and steals my attention. Most people have never heard of this five-square-mile municipality of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (pop: 1,900). But my 16 fellow passengers have. And after the white-knuckle landing at Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport on what is, at 1,200 feet long, the world’s shortest commercial runway, they unanimously applaud.

Saba airport
The visit begins with an exciting landing at the world’s shortest commercial runway. Saba Tourist Bureau

The first plane touched down on the island in 1959, preceded only a dozen years earlier by the first car. Before then, Sabans hoofed it or rode mules up the steep trails that crisscross the vertiginous island, the tip of a now-dormant underwater volcano born about 400,000 years ago. Locals love to tell the story of what’s now known as the Road That Could Not Be Built, which winds upward from the harbor through Saba’s capital, The Bottom, and, finally, to the airport on the northeastern side of the island.

Back in 1938, it would take Joseph “Lambee” Hassell 20 years to build it, a feat visiting Dutch engineers swore, because of the island’s topography, was impossible. Undeterred, Lambee took a correspondence course in engineering, rallied a crew of local men to help, and two decades later the impossible road had become reality, built entirely by hand.

Ladder Bay
Prior to the construction of the road, the stone steps of Ladder Bay were the only way of bringing supplies to the people of Saba. Saba Tourist Bureau

But my nail-biting arrival by air is only the first of many things about the island—which calls itself the Unspoiled Queen—that make it a Caribbean anomaly. At the tiny airport, there’s no bustling transportation desk or scrum of taxi drivers touting for fares. Instead, I’m met by a welcoming woman named Lollipop (“Because I’m so sweet”), who expertly navigates the winding narrow road to Convent Cottage, the two-bedroom I’ll be staying at in Windwardside, one of Saba’s four villages. By the time we get there I’ve learned that Lollipop has two adult children who live abroad; that she used to work in the island’s home for the elderly; owns seven taxis; and also runs a restaurant (Lollipop’s, of course) in The Bottom.

Cove Bay
Not far from the airport is one of Saba’s most heralded snorkeling spots, Cove Bay. Saba Tourist Bureau

It’s this guileless warmth that draws visitors (about 9,000 a year, pre-pandemic) to the island. Tourism officials aim to increase that number in coming years, but they’re challenged by the fact that between its two small hotels, villas, and cottages, there are currently only 124 rooms available on Saba for overnight guests. So, for now, unless you’ve booked well in advance, the best way to experience the island for yourself is on a day trip from St. Maarten, a 90-minute ferry ride away.

The Bottom
The Bottom emerges from the island’s lush jungles, almost as if it’s right out of a movie. Saba Tourist Bureau

Beyond the mountainous terrain, the first thing you’ll notice is the island’s architecture. Almost every home speaks the same traditional vernacular: constructed of wood, painted white with forest green shutters and trim, crowned with a peaked red tin roof edged in scalloped fretwork. Surrounded by gardens ablaze with bougainvillea and Black-Eyed Susans, collectively they look like a Caribbean-ized Shire, and I half expect to see Frodo Baggins emerge through a garden gate.

With no beaches (there’s a tiny black-sand one at Wells Bay, which appears only from June through October), large resorts, casinos, or duty-free shopping, Saba attracts a particular type of traveler, who comes for one or a combination of three things: hiking, diving, and relaxation.

Wells Bay
Like the island itself, the beach at Wells Bay is tiny, but the scenery is certainly remarkable. Saba Tourist Bureau

Hiking is my jam, and on a climb to Mary’s Point (the island’s first European settlement, dating from the 1600s) views of nearby St. Eustatius and St. Kitts are revealed, along with a bit of Saban history, geology, and ecology. My guide, James “Crocodile” Johnson—a 70-year-old who’s been leading hikes since he was 14 and knows the island’s 18 trails better than anyone else—leads the way. He explains that Saba has five ecosystems, ranging from desert to elfin cloud forest. The first settlers, including Mary herself, built their homes high on this craggy mountainside and led a simple, hard-scrabble life that required carrying water up and down the mountain and a constant vigilance for landslides.

I don’t dive, devoting my few days instead to discovering Saba’s “shopportunities,” which are impressive for an island so small. I visit Jo Bean’s Troy Hill glassmaking studio, where she shows me how to make a bead of Venetian glass myself. I visit the atelier of textile artist Els Mommers and fall instantly in love with her pieces, covetable combinations of quilting, painting, and embroidery. I covet the handmade gold, silver, and gemstone baubles at The Jewel Cottage, lusting over a tourmaline ring the cost of which I try—but fail—to justify to myself.

Queen’s Garden resort
With only 10 suites, the Queen’s Hotel, Bar and Kitchen offers the utmost privacy and tranquility. Saba Tourist Bureau

But I don’t have to work at relaxing here; that comes as naturally as breathing. Saba offers so many places for quiet reflection. At the mountainside spa at Queen’s Hotel, Bar and Kitchen. Over morning coffee poolside at the Haiku House villa, as you enjoy the chirps of Bananaquits and the red-roofed splendor of The Bottom below. Or simply on a stroll through the side streets of Windwardside, when in a minute the weather can morph from sunny to misty, and the clouds crowning Mt. Scenery descend to meet you, lending a chill to the air, a sheen to the leaves of tropical plants, and a dreamy scrim to the entire pastoral scene.

By the end of my short visit, it’s patently clear that Saba isn’t for everyone. Of the Caribbean trifecta, it has sun and sea but its missing what, for some, is the crucial S: sand. However, it’s what it lacks that makes Saba so special. And what makes it different, at least to me, makes it all the more desirable.

And with the global pandemic about to enter its third year of anxiety-inducing disruption, finding a soothing, safe place to responsibly escape to for rest, relaxation and rejuvenation feels more necessary than ever.

Dedicated practitioners tailor each participant’s wellness path to their unique goals using activities and treatments that include Pilates, tai chi, Ayurvedic treatments, chanting and Bhutanese healing and osteopathy. Another option is the 5-day Boost Your Immunity Program, which focuses on prevention by identifying opportunities to boost immunity via mental wellbeing, nutrition and fitness.

For travelers in post-infection recovery mode, BodyHoliday also offers a COVID Convalescence Program, a non-medical 5-day program that targets and strengthens the respiratory system to aid recovery and boost general respiratory health. There are several consultations throughout the duration of the program and therapies range from meditation, yoga and Reiki to Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), hypnotherapy and osteopathy.

Couples Retreat at Rendezvous, St. Lucia

Couples seeking time alone to reconnect without family and work-related stresses interfering can head to couples-only boutique resort Rendezvous, located on the white sands of Malabar Beach in St. Lucia, where making up for “stolen time” by rekindling and rejuvenating personal relationships is the property’s focus.

Wellness at the resort comes in all forms—eating well at French-fusion restaurant The Trysting Place (one of three on property), relaxing with a couple’s massage at the Spa in the Water Garden, or enjoying a snorkeling or sailing adventure.

Energetic Re-Mastery at La Samanna, St. Martin

The La Samanna Spa, a hillside oasis at the recently reopened La Samanna: A Belmond Hotel, which is set along secluded Baie Longue Beach on St. Martin, has introduced Energetic Re-Mastery, a program designed to holistically support overall wellbeing by taking a multifaceted approach to wellness.

Led by resident energy healer and 20-year wellness veteren Christine Caruso, each course is tailored to individual needs as she helps clients tap into their potential through mindfulness and healing techniques. Guided sessions include Kundalini meditation to awaken inner energy, Point of Origin meditation to re-engage the divine spark, and the Sacred Stone Activation (an ancient Peruvian tradition of meditative practice).

The La Samanna Spa, set within a Mediterranean-inspired garden, offers open-air treatment rooms featuring a private Zen garden and outdoor shower. In-villa experiences are also available for guests, including sunrise yoga flows, reiki and evening meditation.

Golden Rock Resort
In a region loaded with amazing views, St. Eustatius has always been part of the background. Golden Rock changes that. Golden Rock Resort

Located on St. Eustatius, one of the last untouched islands in the Caribbean, Golden Rock Resort is now open to international travelers. The luxury lifestyle resort celebrates the area’s unspoiled nature and offers travelers a rare chance to experience the Caribbean in its most natural state. The property spans 40 acres of hills and beaches and offers 32 modern guest rooms with panoramic ocean views, with 22 new oceanfront villas coming in early 2022.

The resort is set next to Quill, St. Eustatius’s dormant volcano that has become a renowned hiking spot with the perfect blend of natural beauty and adventure, all while being just a short distance away from the comfort of the resort. The island itself is home to dozens of local species of birds, many fascinating historical monuments, and more diving locations than you could ask for, including the famous St. Eustatius National Marine Park, which has become a favorite for divers around the world looking for untouched reefs, shipwrecks, and more to explore under the surface. And for history buffs, the 18th century St. Eustatius town center is just around the corner from the resort.

Golden Rock guests have at their disposal a range of relaxing spa treatments, a professionally equipped oceanfront gym, a huge swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts, and more. Hikes and diving trips are available on request, and the resort is hard at work to finish its oceanfront infinity pool early next year.

After a long day by the beach or exploring the island, guests can enjoy Breeze, the resort’s upscale seafood restaurant and steakhouse and dine on specialties like Caribbean lobster, king crab, and beef tenderloin with fresh vegetables grown right in the resort’s own garden.

By the pool or the secluded beach, guests will find nothing but peace here. Golden Rock Resort

Golden Rock Resort was also designed to be ecologically sustainable and low impact in order to preserve the natural splendor of the island as it has been for hundreds of years. The entire property is powered via solar panels, ocean water is filtered with reverse osmosis to supply guests and staff with clean drinking water, and dirty water is filtered using a helophyte filter to irrigate the resort’s lush landscaping.

Also known as Statia, the island is located just 33 miles southwest of Sint Maarten. Many international airlines serve the area and short 20-minute charter flights allow guests to reach the island quickly; ferry service will be added in the near future.
