This property is like its own city, and guests will want to become residents. Beaches Turks and Caicos

I don’t recall how my 7-year-old son originally learned about Turks and Caicos, but once he’s set on an idea, he rarely relents. “Did you know that Turks and Caicos has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world,” he told me in more of a statement than question. I admitted I’d already visited Grace Bay multiple times and can assure him—and everyone else—that it more than lives up to its reputation. He was instantly jealous and a little angry I hadn’t let him tag along, so I pulled the ultimate dad move: “I’ve been trying to talk your mom into a vacation there, but she prefers the Bahamas.”

Sure, I was in trouble the moment that sentence ended, but I had been dying to get back to Providenciales, so I knew the boy would take care of the rest. In the meantime, I also knew I’d be grilled about resorts—it comes with the career, obviously—but there’s only one choice for a boy who is crazy about pools, thrilling experiences and amenities, and occasional surprise events: Beaches Turks and Caicos.

An overhead view of Beaches Turks and Caicos on Grace Bay Beach.
Yes, the slides and water park are as fun as they look. Beaches Turks and Caicos

Each time I’d previously visited Provo, I asked my hosts about the various resorts, and while they certainly spread the praise equally, they all agreed that Beaches Turks and Caicos was the best choice for families. “There’s so much to do and you never have to leave,” one local told me. Another added, “They always have something going on and the beach is never crowded, so everything is right there.” Of course, they also agreed that everyone should still leave and explore, especially for my personal favorites, like a round at Royal Turks and Caicos and dinner at Le Bouchon Du Village.

But the kids are ultimately the best critics, so here are the aspects my son loved the most—all of which put the biggest smile on my face.

Wide Open Spaces

An aerial view of Beaches Turks and Caicos
Where to stay? What to do? These are great dilemmas to face. Beaches Turks and Caicos

Let’s start with the most important factor: accommodations. Beaches Turks and Caicos is set up like a city, with different neighborhoods and styles to choose from, including the Key West, Caribbean and Seaside, Italian, and French Villages. It’s like a tropical Epcot you can sleep at. On one hand, I was enthralled with the various designs and concepts, but I was also a little bummed that we couldn’t stay in all of them. Still, the typical dad in me was thrilled to say things like, “Let’s hang a left at Key West and go two pools beyond France” and “If you’ve reached Italy, you’ve gone too far!”

Our Key West Three Bedroom Gardenview Butler Villa was basically a vacation apartment and more than we needed in terms of space, but that’s kind of the thing here. Everything feels like a bonus. From the living room to the patio deck and the dining options to the nightlife, it’s an all-exclusive experience on steroids.

Making Familiar Friends

A child meets Elmo at Beaches Turks and Caicos
Kids can spend their days with resort staff learning all about the island while also meeting their favorite Sesame Street characters. Beaches Turks and Caicos

When we set up a bedtime book-reading with Cookie Monster, my wife and I were a little worried our son had already outgrown his favorite Sesame Street character. (Not to mention his poor Elmo doll has collected two years of dust in the closet.) Fortunately, he’s as much a nostalgic soul as I am, and when that giant blue belly and those big eyeballs appeared at our villa door, he basically lost his mind as if he was four all over again.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Oh great, some poor guy in a costume just going through the motions.” Not the case. Cookie Monster and his handler were so incredibly kind and in-tune with my son’s reaction and even his age, so their jokes delighted him and the character’s dancing antics had him laughing so hard I thought he was going to barf up the cheese and crackers he didn’t know I saw him take from the complimentary platter.

Not that we needed extra snacks, of course…

Food, Glorious, Food!

Giuseppe’s Italian restaurant at Beaches Turks and Caicos
Even an ordinary dinner at Giuseppe’s felt like a big party with the other families mingling and strolling through the courtyard. Beaches Turks and Caicos

With 20 dining options to choose from, this is a kingdom of indulgence. Just thinking about how much we ate during our four-day visit has me sweating again. My opinion matters very little, however, because every parent knows that the greatest vacation challenge is appeasing the wildly changing appetites of the world’s pickiest eaters. And I can’t even imagine what that’s like for families with two or more kids, which is why Beaches Turks and Caicos is currently my number one recommendation when friends call.

It’s not just the number of options, though, as much as the variety. Italian, Mediterranean, British, French, Caribbean, American—when your child has that mac and cheese mindset or is just a cheeseburger machine, a parent can stress over the thought of not being able to incorporate foreign cuisine into the daily grind. (Hell, my son thinks Mexican food begins and ends with a quesadilla.)

The cuisine at Café de Paris will hardly remind anyone of a bistro two blocks from the Eifel Tower, but it’s still very good and, best of all, my son thinks The Cricketers Pub was a legitimate British establishment, so he even asks for fish and chips at home now. (I draw the line at black pudding, though.)

Very Pleasant Surprises

98 Degrees on stage for a performance at Beaches Turks and Caicos.
You don’t have to like boy bands to appreciate the medley of 90s pop hits they performed for well over an hour. Islands

Sandals resorts are well known for spoiling guests with a little extra fun on a moment’s notice. For example, the Blue Man Group was brought in to headline the opening party at Sandals Royal Curacao last year, but those famous silent dudes also spent time running around the property for their legendary hijinks. So, I wasn’t necessarily surprised when the Beaches Turks and Caicos staff alerted us at check-in that we’d picked a very “hot” weekend to stay.

That’s because 98 Degrees had just arrived for a one-night-only show, and you don’t have to be a fan of cheesy boy band pop to appreciate the opportunity to witness this rare reunion. Although, it was a little difficult to explain to a seven-year-old how cool these men who all look like dad’s friends used to be, but the enthusiasm of the women in the crowd helped me deliver my point. Also, he just loved being at a concert, so it was yet another win.

So Much More than the Beach

Grace Bay Beach at Beaches Turks and Caicos
Yes, the beach is as beautiful as everyone says, but there’s way more to do here. Beaches Turks and Caicos

The thing about Provo is any vacation begins and ends with Grace Bay Beach. Family, romance, adventure—pick a theme and this destination does it with aplomb, because the sand makes such a phenomenal setting and backdrop. Beaches Turks and Caicos is not only a gateway to that majestic natural landmark, but it is also a theme park (the water slides are awesome), an entertainment venue, and even an educational experience (geography, anyone?).

Most of all, it’s a starting point for a lifetime of amazing memories. What does Sandals do better than any resort chain in the world? It turns guests into repeat visitors by offering them consistent, creative quality and comfort in some of the Caribbean’s most beautiful settings. Children don’t get to have that fun, but Beaches Turks and Caicos is one of the few exceptions.

And for family fun in paradise, it’s nothing short of exceptional.

It’s not uncommon for friends and family to reach out and ask for an amazing vacation setting. However, my response often comes with a warning: I’m not going to merely settle for amazing; instead, I am going to offer concepts that redefine that word. After all, why choose a vacation experience that thousands of other families are either planning at the same time or have already done? Instead, go bigger than big and choose a resort and destination that will make every family’s collective jaw drop.

For example, let’s head to Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa and check out the unbelievable Overwater Reef Residence. Now, we’ve seen some spectacular overwater bungalows over the years, but those that exist in the Maldives are legendary for raising the bar time and time again. Still relatively new, this option is the latest to change the game, and we just cannot help appreciating the thoroughly impeccable design job.

As many as eight guests can stay in this masterpiece, as it boasts a master with oversized king, another master king bedroom, and one twin bedroom, which is undoubtedly where the happiest kids in the world will sleep after a long day of adventure. Each accommodation has its own ensuite bathroom, while the beautifully subtle décor will have everyone wishing they could call this place home forever.

The centerpiece is obviously the private 16-meter infinity pool and terrace that offers sunken loungers, as parents can kick back and relax while the younger guests explore the house lagoon reef in guided snorkeling sessions or even embark on a journey to several locations around this vibrant atoll.

Even the most extravagant villas are still mostly defined by the intimate aspects and the personal touches that are conceived to ensure the family vacation of a lifetime. The Overwater Reef Residence offers a full kitchen and spaces for indoor and outdoor dining, as well as an outdoor BBQ area for anyone who understandably doesn’t want to be inside at any point during this journey.

The Ocean Pool on Grace Bay Beach at Wymara Resort and Villas in Turks and Caicos.
The Ocean Pool is guaranteed to become a hot spot for influencers. Wymara Resort and Villas

Forget death and taxes—if one thing is certain in this world, it’s that Caribbean resorts will never stop trying to develop the most creative, extravagant pools we’ve ever seen. This is especially true on the island of Providenciales in Turks and Caicos, where Grace Bay Beach is so magnificent and alluring that the resorts that are blessed to have it as a backdrop must come up with concepts that will make guests want to remain on-property. In fairness, they all do it very well.

But what if the resort’s pool uses the beach to its advantage and offers guests the best of both worlds? The brilliant minds at Wymara Resort and Villas answered that question with a slam dunk and three exclamation points when the property recently unveiled its spectacular Ocean Pool, which is the first of its kind in this region.

Owner Bruce Maclaren was inspired to create this unique amenity after spending many years in Australia, where ocean pools have long been a popular attraction. The resort began construction last October by moving more than 1,500 tons of rock, and the result is a 3,900-sq. ft. pool with shallow and deep ends (the depth depends on the tides), as well as a stunning 4,880-sq. ft. timber deck complete with a bar and enough lounge chairs for an intimate, Instagrammable day.

The Beach Club is an idyllic setting for any family getaways or milestone celebrations. Wymara Resort and Villas

“While ocean pools aren’t just an Aussie thing, they do inspire a kind of fervor there that borders on the fanatical,” Maclaren explained. “They’re probably more in the public eye now than ever. Maybe it’s Instagram—they’re so seductive to photograph. But having experienced the benefits of ocean pools and the communities that evolve around them, I thought, well, maybe we can do this here.”

And done this they have. Although, it’s hardly the best thing this Wymara property has to offer. In a destination known for exceptional villas, this resort raises the bar with both luxury and quality of service. Families will especially love the Amuse Villa, which boasts four bedrooms and myriad exclusive services and amenities, including a private infinity pool that overlooks the ocean. However, younger travelers will experience love at first sight when they see the phenomenal multi-story waterslide.

Wymara Resort and Villas in Turks and Caicos is currently offering guests a free fourth night when they book a three-night stay between now and October 31. However, some would argue four nights is hardly enough time to enjoy the best of this resort and Provo.

Set on 5.5 acres along the western stretch of Grace Bay Beach, this will undoubtedly be a popular choice when doors finally open. Andaz Turks and Caicos

To say that Andaz Turks and Caicos is a highly anticipated resort is a bit of an understatement. Since I first had the opportunity to view the plans and renderings, as well as the lot where it will soon exist, it was clear that this resort concept was going to put the rest of the destination’s offerings on notice. And that’s not exactly an easy thing to do when the other hotels and resorts on Providenciales alone are collectively among the best in the Caribbean.

Set on the western end of Grace Bay Beach—one of the most beautiful stretches of sand you’ll ever see—it’s safe to say the views alone will be worth the effort to get here. But the 59-key resort, which will also boast 74 residential units, promises to be as breathtaking inside as everything is outside, and eventual guests can now mark the calendar for a late 2025 opening.

Now that this project is “shovel-ready,” this will be the first Hyatt Hotels property in the destination, and it’s safe to assume that it will instantly be one of the most popular in the entire portfolio. Judging by the success of financing and sales, travelers will be eager to spend as much time testing the resort’s four dining options and indoor fitness and wellness facility as they will swimming around the nearby Smith’s Reef.

At this stage, though, it’s all about building energy, positivity, and reasonable expectations. That shouldn’t be difficult.

There’s not a bad view on this island, but the terrace might eventually offer the best. Andaz Turks and Caicos

“Having lived and worked on the island for 26 years, I can say this is one of the most exciting developments in decades,” said John Zammit, a real estate developer and longtime resident who serves on the property’s board of directors. “It is a complete game changer, offering a new take on contemporary luxury lifestyle accommodations and residences, while offering the upscale amenities and guest services that the Andaz brand is so well known for.”

Resorts in Turks and Caicos are notorious putting luxury above all else and redefining comfort, so the addition of the Andaz brand is about as fitting as it gets.

The Altos de Chavón amphitheater has hosted Elton John, Gloria Estefan, and Jennifer Lopez, among others, and Michael Bublé will soon join the party. Casa de Campo Resort and Villas

Casa de Campo is the kind of place that is loaded with pleasant surprises. From the stunning views and challenging holes of the celebrated Teeth of the Dog golf course to the luxurious new spoils of the Premier Club, this spectacular resort community offers guests so many activities and adventures, and one of my favorite elements is the marvelous Altos de Chavón.

This charming replica of a 16th century Mediterranean village is home to several dining options that make it, first and foremost, the perfect stop after a round or two on the Dye Fore courses. Chilango Taqueria alone is a must-visit for anyone seeking the best mezcal cocktails on the entire island. And even if you’re simply stopping in to admire the architecture, the amphitheater’s ancient vibes will make you feel as if you’ve traveled back in time to watch history’s greatest plays or a brilliant philosopher explain the meaning of the universe.

That is, until one of today’s biggest stars takes the stage for the concert of the year.

On September 30, Michael Bublé will make his debut in the Dominican Republic as a special addition to his 2023 Higher Tour. Fans will undoubtedly flock to the 5,000-seat venue for this once in a lifetime performance that slotted perfectly between his Puerto Rico show and a run of dates in Mexico. Bublé joins prestigious company, as the amphitheater’s 40-year run began with Frank Sinatra and has included legends like Elton John, Jennifer Lopez, Gloria Estefan, Andrea Bocelli, and Sting, among many others.

General ticket sales launched on June 28, so if anyone was somehow on the fence about visiting this spectacular golf haven in the fall, this should seal the deal. And if that’s still not enough, the brand new Spa at Casa de Campo is the cherry on top. Believe me, I’ve seen it all with my own eyes and can’t wait to get back.

Even on the Busiest Days, Time Stands Still at the Ritz-Carlton, Reynolds Lake Oconee https://www.islands.com/resorts/ritz-carlton-reynolds-lake-oconee-family-vacation/ Thu, 03 Aug 2023 16:02:15 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=47435 Appreciating Georgia’s favorite family vacation playground through the eyes of a child will make the experience even better.

Sometimes the perfect oasis is miles from the ocean. The Ritz-Carlton, Reynolds Lake Oconee

The first time we arrived at The Ritz-Carlton, Reynolds Lake Oconee, my wife and I instantly declared it our favorite Ritz property in the continental U.S. Clichés be damned, there’s just something different about the look and aura of this property, almost as if it transports guests to another era without sacrificing the creative, spoiling luxuries that travelers have come to covet from this brand. It’s hard to sum it all up with one quick, clever phrase, but here’s what really matters: our son absolutely loves it.

So much so that he’s never stopped talking about that first visit. This is surprising because the average child’s attention span changes to the next thing before I finish this sentence. Just when I think I’ve learned enough about Minecraft to engage with his favorite game, he informs me that it’s all about Pokemon now, and I’m sure that by next week all my Charizard research will be worthless because he’ll be into Yu-Gi-Oh.

A child shows off the fish he caught at Reynolds Lake Oconee in Georgia.
He was just as happy to put the fish back in the water and wave goodbye. Ashley Burns

It turns out, though, that no imaginary cartoon character can hold a candle to a simple little bass. Two years after that first visit, my son still occasionally shows me his favorite vacation souvenir: a photograph (yes, we still print them) of him triumphantly standing with a fish barely bigger than his own foot. And every time he hands that picture to me, I know what he’s trying to say: “Let’s go back.”

Fortunately, this time, we all agreed. As alluring as our favorite Caribbean resorts may be, sometimes you just need a massive lake, some fishing rods, and an infinity pool. And some fabulous new amenities don’t hurt.

Pump Your Brakes, Parents

The kids’ pool at The Ritz-Carlton, Reynolds Lake Oconee.
Kids will absolutely love the family pool, but parents will be surprised at how spacious the seating is. The Ritz-Carlton, Reynolds Lake Oconee

What I love the most about The Ritz-Carlton, Reynolds Lake Oconee, is that you don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn to force the kids to get dressed for the pool and lake, cram breakfast into your mouths without enjoying a single bite, and then race the other families to claim any chairs, let alone the best ones in the house. Pace of play isn’t just for the amazing golf courses here, as everyone is so laid back that there’s no reason to rush.

When my son wanted to bounce on the giant inflatables in the lake, there were always open chairs waiting for us on the sand. If my wife and her sister wanted to escape to the adults-only pool for some of the best cocktails in the Peach State, they didn’t have to search for hours to find new chairs. But the biggest relief was the seating availability at the family pool, which was added shortly after our last visit.

We assumed this would be the busiest spot on the resort property, with families hoarding as many loungers as they could by placing every towel, hat, toy, and Croc across them. We were gloriously wrong. Seating is ample at all times of day, and while kids are splashing in their own pool, parents can enjoy a variety of fun snacks and drinks at the Splash Shack, another terrific addition.

Those Summer Camp Vibes

The fire pit seating area at The Ritz-Carlton, Reynolds Lake Oconee, in Georgia.
There’s nothing like mingling with other families over s’mores after a long day of lake fun. The Ritz-Carlton, Reynolds Lake Oconee

Watching the kids run wild here reminded me of the vintage ‘80s summer camp vibes from my childhood, aside from today’s children enjoying far more superior and thrilling lake toys. Keeping a cautious dad’s eye on them as they bounced on the pair of massive inflatable trampolines and slide headfirst into the water from the floating platform, I was honestly a little jealous of how good they had it made. And that’s before we gathered at the campfire for s’mores and watched all the younger guests reunite to plan the next day’s adventures.

Now, I realize the phrase “run wild” might give the wrong impression. This isn’t an Orlando theme park hotel, nor is it the bargain Cancun all-inclusive or the deck of a crowded cruise ship. Here, the kids can play for hours and cause nary a distraction, while adults—both parents and childless romantics alike—can have their fun as well. I don’t know how this Ritz pulls that off so well, but it’s truly splendid.

The Ritz Kids club at The Ritz-Carlton, Reynolds Lake Oconee, in Georgia.
Between the outdoor adventure and the myriad games and activities in the clubhouse, parents might be jealous of all the fun their children will have here. The Ritz-Carlton, Reynolds Lake Oconee

But if we’re focusing solely on the children, there’s no better item to add to the agenda than an afternoon at Ritz Kids. This is a blanket statement for Ritz-Carlton properties worldwide; however, there’s so much adventure and nature to appreciate at Reynolds Lake Oconee that its’ thrilling for both the children and parents to know that the informative, entertaining staff members are providing an educational element in addition to letting the smaller guests win at air hockey.

It’ll be a long time before I forget how much fun my son had on his Ritz Kids retreat, because he’s still talking about it a month later. Especially the fishing. It turns out that when dad struggles to pull the hook from a fish’s mouth but the “camp counselor” (his words) can do it with the flick of a wrist, it means you’ve been surpassed in the pecking order. The criticism is worth it, though, when it means he has a lifelong memory and maybe even a new hobby to build on for many trips to come.

Something New for the Picky Eaters

The patio seating area at Gaby’s by the Lake at The Ritz-Carlton, Reynolds Lake Oconee, in Georgia.
Longtime guests know that Gaby’s is great for all ages, but new dining options only make the experience better. The Ritz-Carlton, Reynolds Lake Oconee

One thing that always gets travelers worked up when it comes to their favorite resorts is a new restaurant. So, when we arrived at The Ritz-Carlton, Reynolds Lake Oconee, there was already a ton of buzz for the most recent addition to the property’s dining options: Amore Del Lago. A good Italian joint is always an ideal choice on vacation, especially when the culinary team goes above and beyond in making phenomenal butter noodles and sauceless pizza for a 7-year-old whose palate hasn’t quite yet evolved.

Guests were raving about Amore Del Lago throughout our visit, so much so that we had to be flexible with our dinner times because securing a reservation—at least on short notice—was difficult. Fortunately, there are still other terrific dining options here, including Gaby’s by the Lake, which is already about as perfect as can be, and the Linger Longer Steakhouse as an ideal choice for large family meals or simply celebrating a great round on Great Waters with a mouth-watering filet.

Not long after my visit, a friend took his family to Reynolds Lake Oconee and seemed somewhat unimpressed by what he thought was a lack of variety in the dining options. The key, I’ll tell him and anyone else with ears, is to spread it out and visit places like The National Tavern, which has a pecan old fashioned that pairs well with the best pork chops I’ve ever devoured, and the Great Waters Waterview Pub, where the fish tacos are practically a religion.

And Don’t Forget the Golf

The view from the green on Hole 18 at The Oconee in Reynolds Lake Oconee, Georgia.
Even the most basic golfers will feel like they’re playing like a pro on these beautiful courses. Ashley Burns

It wasn’t until we’d reached the Florida-Georgia border on our drive home that my son caught site of “Excalibur,” my magical new TaylorMade Stealth 2 driver that was custom assembled for me at The Kingdom. To this point, he’d shown hardly any interest in golf, as his set of junior clubs, delivered by Santa in 2020, still has bubble wrap on the irons. But kids do and say the darndest things, and he suddenly declared: “I think I’d like to learn golf.”

You and me both, kid.

When I visited Reynolds Lake Oconee the first time, I was very intimidated by The Kingdom, as I was under the foolish belief that if I took a lesson here, the experts would rip my game to shreds and make me feel worse than I did shooting 106 on The Oconee. But every golfer I know who has visited and taken lessons has told me that this is as much the place for a scratch golfer to manage imperfections as it is for an average shlub to begin anew.

This was confirmed when I spent time with Sean Cain, whose simple methods instantly reshaped my short game and helped me shave at least 10 strokes off my round the next day. I was so impressed with the patience of these instructors that I’d send my son to them in a heartbeat if he really wants to learn this maddening yet wonderful sport.

And just as the Ritz Kids program blended adventure with education, Little Rippers (ages 4-7) and Rippers (8-10) will enjoy an experience that merges golf with fitness to help them get accustomed to the physical movements us older golfers have been desperately trying to master for years, if not decades. Perhaps best of all is that parents can save money on sending multiple junior golfers to The Kingdom.

They’ll receive the lesson of a lifetime and parents will enjoy a little extra quiet time at the adults-only pool. It’s a win-win at a place that knows how to make guests of all ages feel victorious.

The privacy and seclusion offered here makes it one of the most desirable resorts in these islands. Amanyara

Everything about Amanyara encourages escaping. The 10-minute drive from the main road down a bumpy, unpaved path hints at its remote location on the island’s northwest coast, far from the resorts strung along Grace Bay. Freestanding villas flanked by foliage with paths leading to private beaches and jagged outcrops speak to the level of privacy; stringing a rope barrier across the path leading to your front door lets staff know you want to be left to your own devices.

Some accommodations are self-contained, with private pools, the option of a private chef and butler, and bedrooms designed for your nanny—or your bodyguard. But if I had to select the one feature that makes this upscale tropical escape a paragon of perfection, it’s not the fact that you can hole up and be left completely alone—it’s the water.

An aerial view of the beach at Amanyara in Turks and Caicos.
There’s no such thing as a bad beach in this destination, but some are certainly more amazing than others. Amanyara

In my Instagram story, I referred to the water as looking like “Turks-quoise”, and there’s no other fitting way to describe its uniqueness. The color on this island—and on the pristine stretch of beach occupied by the Amanyara—is like none other I’ve seen, except maybe Bora Bora. It’s a hue that mesmerizingly morphs into various shades of cerulean, teal, aquamarine, and cobalt depending on the water depths, time of day, and the sun’s angle. I couldn’t get enough of it. And it’s definitely capable of stirring any guest to emerge from their cocoon of luxury.

Depending on the time of day or time of year, you might have that half-mile of white sand beach practically to yourself. (When I was there in June, there were rarely more than a few other guests strewn out on lounge chairs.)  The property is located within an 18,000-acre nature reserve, with literally nothing next door except a public beach a decent walk away that’s really only “busy” on weekends. The water is gloriously calm and unbelievably clear, and so salty that it’s literally impossible not to float. Kayaks and SUPs are at your disposal; just as fun is watching schools of fish meander by. The name Amanyara, a mash-up of Sanskrit and the language of the indigenous Arawaks, doesn’t translate to “peaceful place” for nothing.

Beyond the beach, the island’s natural beauty is on full display here. Amanyara

Even more restorative than hugging the coastline on the water is getting out there on a boat. Included as an amenity are snorkeling expeditions within Northwest Point Marine National Park —just a five- or 10-minute boat ride right from the beach. The morning I went, I was the only taker, and my captain graciously offered to accompany me underwater to spot the marine life.  He dove down to coax out spiny lobsters from their hiding spots and we peered at aqua parrotfish and graceful blue and yellow queen angelfish hanging out by the coral reef, as purple lace-like sea fans lazily waved with the current. It was among the best snorkeling I’ve ever done, especially since it was so effortless: no taxi to the harbor or shuttling on and off a boat with dozens of other people.

Eventually, though, I had to retreat to my villa to escape the intense summer sun and wash off all that salt. Not that it was a hardship by any stretch. Amanyara’s pavilions, as they are called, overlook ponds or beaches. Eaves overhang on three sides to provide shade on the terrace, and floor-to-ceiling glass doors let you soak in your natural surroundings. In addition to the watersports and snorkeling, other niceties include daily wellness classes, in-room refreshments like fresh fruit, chocolate, nuts, and candy, a well-stocked coffee and tea station with a Nespresso machine and electric kettle, and a mini-fridge with non-alcoholic beverages. (There is a charge for in-room wine and liquor in the minibar.)

I was given a welcome cocktail upon arrival that I could spike at the bar, and when I checked into my room, there was a bottle of Charles Heidsieck Champagne chilling, which I immediately uncorked, taking a fluteful down my path to check out my semi-private rocky beach at dusk. (Daily insect treatments keep the mosquitos relatively at bay, but there is bug spray in the room if you need it.) A tote bag and flip flops are for your use and a sweet souvenir when you return home.

The Ocean Pavilion offers subtle décor that pairs nicely with the surrounding natural beauty. Amanyara

Layouts and other amenities depend on the room category. My 700-sq. ft. Ocean Pavilion was outfitted with a four-poster king-size bed with sheer curtains, a living area, and en suite bathroom with a freestanding tub, spacious rain shower, twin vanities, and a Japanese toilet with an automatic heated seat and bidet and dryer features. Thoughtful pampering-focused treats were left on my bed nightly including Aman-branded gold algae eye masks, handmade soap, and bath bombs. My wooden sun deck had two lounge chairs and an umbrella, and there were two bikes parked outside for my use. (It was a tad hot during my visit, so I opted to call the front desk to request a buggy ride to get to and from the restaurants, beach, and spa.)

Since Amanyara is so isolated, you’ll most likely enjoy all your meals on property. Most guests take advantage of the Season of Discovery package, which is all-inclusive of all meals including a two-course lunch and three-course dinner. The Restaurant, as it’s simply called, serves breakfast and dinner, with a view of either the ocean or shallow water features adjacent to the lobby and bar. The latter look especially dramatic after dark, when the lights reflect on the water, and on some evenings there’s live music.

You can start your day with a variety of pastries and egg dishes, options from the wellness menu like coconut chia pudding or an açai bowl, or savory fare like shakshuka or cheese and charcuterie. I was delighted to learn that the current dinner menu skews Asian, with curries, sushi, and noodle dishes, and throughout the course of my stay I sampled a lot of it. Memorable dishes include gyoza stuffed with pork, ginger, and cabbage, silky black cod sliders, green Thai curry with eggplant, and A4 Japanese Wagyu sirloin served with bok choy and shiitake mushrooms, which literally melted in my mouth like butter. Desserts also have an Eastern slant, like a coconut cream-topped spongy, green chiffon cake with the herbaceous, vanilla-coconut flavor of pandan leaf.

From private, romantic dining for two to a pizza making class, the culinary options are divinely creative. Amanyara

The Beach Club is Amanyara’s other dining concept, with a Mediterranean menu for lunch, snacks, and casual dinners, taken at tables on tiered decks with ocean views. I found this to be quite a delightful spot to escape the sun for lunch, but if you prefer, staff will bring food to your lounge chair or daybed at the beach or infinity pool. Start with an Aperol, Hugo, Amalfi, or Campari spritz and a trio of spreads, served with freshly baked oregano bread. Crispy fritto misto arrives with fried zucchini and lemon aioli, clams are steamed with white wine, tomatoes and garlic, and tender, fresh conch ceviche is topped with gremolata and tomato salsa.

There’s also a wood-fired oven for pizzas and freshly made pasta, and a catch of the day that can be grilled, pan-seared or fried. (A seriously overcooked piece of grouper one day was the kitchen’s only misstep, and staff immediately swooped in to rectify the situation.) If you’re feeling peckish in the afternoon, complimentary afternoon tea is served at the bar, with an iced tea infusion and savory and sweet bites like mochi and tofu.

Guests can mingle and enjoy refreshing cocktails at the Beach Club’s bar. Amanyara

Sundowners are a big deal here. Guests flock to a table al fresco next to the infinity pool, or one of the open-air built-in nooks with lounge pillows, to sip a craft cocktail from a menu that balances booze-forward libations with refreshing ones as the sun sets. The herbal, savory Gin Ticker combines fennel-infused gin, Chartreuse, lemon, celery bitters, and saline; and Aztec Summer shakes jalapeno Tequila and mezcal with Lillet Blanc, cucumber, lime, and agave. The resort also regularly welcomes guest bartenders; during my stay, Valentino Longo, beverage consultant and winner of the 2020 North America Most Imaginative Bartender Competition, was serving original sips including a mango and rum riff on a New York Sour.

At the spa, all-in-one freestanding treatment pavilions include a full bathroom and changing area. Treatments are inspired by the Aman brand’s three product lines—Grounding, Purifying and Nourishing—with four treatments for each formulation, Massage, Body Scrub and Wrap, Face Ritual, and the Journey. My 90-minute massage from in-house therapist Jick was exactly what my stiff neck and shoulders needed. A spa pool and relaxation area extend the bliss.

A pair of loungers on the beach at Amanyara in Turks and Caicos.
The wellness options range from spectacular spa experiences to simply spending hours watching the stunning waves roll in. Amanyara

In addition to treatments, Amanyara’s wellness programming includes mindfulness and stress management, one-day wellness immersions, and longer retreats. One afternoon, I met with visiting specialist and current wellness manager Toby Maguire, who used a device on me called an AcuGraph, basically a simplified version of Chinese medicine that can chart deficiencies in various organs and systems. The results can be used to curate a customized holistic plan with nutritional and fitness guidance during and after your visit. Afterwards, he guided me on one of the mindfulness walks offered weekly, which wound through the vegetation and ended with a seated guided meditation on the sand.

Staff told me that four nights here is the sweet spot for a stay, the perfect amount of time to generate restorative vibes and take advantage of the property’s amenities without running out of things to do. As my car service turned onto that dirt road to begin the half-hour journey back to the airport in Providenciales, I thought about how even a three-night sojourn in this blue-filtered escape definitely instilled a sense of lingering peace.

8 Things We Love About the New Goldwynn Resort in Nassau https://www.islands.com/resorts/nassau-bahamas-goldwynn-resort-vacation/ Mon, 03 Jul 2023 16:15:06 +0000 https://www.islands.com/?p=47388 Classic Bahamian meets nouveau Caribbean at this dazzling boutique property.

The exterior of the Goldwynn Resort in Nassau, Bahamas.
Don’t be fooled by size—small properties can pack a huge punch. Goldwynn Resort

Situated on the former site of the Gold Blossom Estate, a 1930s-era British colonial property, the oceanfront Goldwynn Resort definitely has the feel of old Nassau—with modern touches. Since the resort opened its doors on February 1, staff has welcomed guests drawn to this accessible paradise just off the Florida coastline. While not an adults-only property, it also doesn’t have a kids’ club or lots of activities, the Goldwynn is organically evolving to draw in anybody who’s looking for a laid-back beach vacay.

The short hop has always made the Bahamas a draw for East Coasters, but a new nonstop once-weekly Saturday flight on JetBlue from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Nassau’s Sir Lynden Pindling Airport (NAS) starting this fall will also open the tropical playground to a wider swath of beach lovers. No matter your origin, here are eight reasons to love this shiny new gem on Cable Beach.

The resort is in a private yet prime location

The view from the infinity pool at the Goldwynn Resort in Nassau, Bahamas.
Approximately 15 minutes from the airport, guests won’t have to wait long to lounge. Goldwynn Resort

Some beachfront areas are so overbuilt with hotels and high rises that they feel cramped and crowded. But the Goldwynn, located on Goodman Bay, is flanked by just a few private homes and small inns on one end, and a hotel complex with the Baha Mar, Rosewood, and SLS Baha Mar resorts at the other end. The resort is also adjacent to the bay’s namesake park, with lots of trees and green space. It all translates to a serene vibe with minimal foot traffic or noise.

If you’re a beach person, you’ll be right in your element

The pool and beach at the Goldwynn Resort in Nassau, Bahamas.
Pool or beach? It’s very easy to change minds here. Goldwynn Resort

The sand here is powdery and pristine, with few rocks or shells and none of the seaweed that constantly washes ashore and plagues other destinations. The color of the water is a mosaic of light turquoise and deep cerulean, since the developers decided to preserve the limestone and plant life rather than blast it away (making it easier to spot fish and turtles with your snorkeling gear).

Thanks to a reef located offshore, the water stays placid and wave-free, so it’s easy to navigate one of the free kayaks or SUPs at the watersports center for guests’ use. For a less active experience, lay back on one of the round tethered floats that dot the water; the centers are mesh, so you can stay cool, and half submerged while lounging.

But you might choose to while away the day by the pool

From your beach-facing balcony, you’ll notice that the freshwater infinity pool is shaped like an eye; from the poolscape, you’ll see that the resort’s floor-to-ceiling windows reflect the ever-changing hue of the water as the sun hits it throughout the day. There are ample pool chairs, an ice water dispenser, and a pool bar. You can also rent one of the six cabanas, which include butler service; though truth be told, they could use a bit of a tweak, as their surrounding striped sunshades don’t allow for enough airflow, so if you crave privacy you might sweat.

The soundtrack is somehow always what you’re in the mood to hear, from disco and soul, to 80s to ambient lounge vibes. And the beach is just a few steps away, so you can pop down for a walk, swim, or lounge, then sink back into your shady poolside lounger.

You’ll find Bahamian influences throughout the property

A beachside cabana at the Goldwynn Resort in Nassau, Bahamas.
The resort’s design and décor, from the beachside cabanas to the rooms, celebrates the regional beauty. Goldwynn Resort

The photos of bathers in retro suits and swim caps on the hotel’s home page are a hint to the throwback feel and local touches you’ll encounter at Goldwynn. Just off the lobby is a collage of photos dating back to the mid-1900s and earlier. Throughout the hotel, you’ll find works by local artists, including a massive relief sculpture with pink flamingos—The Bahamas’ national bird—over the coffee bar at Atria.

High on the adjacent wall, a series of shells, flowers, and sea life is imagined in varying shades of blue to mimic the varying color of the sea. Rooms and floors are also decorated with pieces from Bahamian artists—and no two are alike. Next to Rhizophora Spa are plaques with dozens of native slang terms like “All Kerpunkle Up,” which is how you might be feeling after throwing back too many Bahama Mamas.

Speaking of the spa, it’s named for the indigenous mangrove trees called rhizophora that protect the Bahamas from storms and erosion and keep the ecosystem healthy. And the team partnered with the Nassau-based Titan Hospitality Group for its dining concepts, owned by Bahamians of Greek descent.

There’s not a bad room

The view from the balcony of an Edge Suite at the Goldwynn Resort in Nassau, Bahamas.
The Edge Suite’s private balcony offers one of the best seats on the island. Goldwynn Resort

Every one of the 81 energy-efficient studios and suites has refined interiors with muted shades of sand and teal, and balconies that face the ocean or the golf course. (The Goldwynn is the only resort in Nassau with golf course-facing accommodations.) Sprawling balconies in the larger one-, two- and three-bedroom suites are accessible from the living room and bedroom(s); oceanfront Edge suites are corner-facing and offer the best views of the water. (Remember to bring bug spray if you plan on hanging outside, as the mosquitos are rabid in the early morning and at dusk, especially after a rain shower.)

All accommodations have either a kitchenette or a full kitchen with high-end stainless steel appliances and a separate ionized and filtered tap for drinking water (guests are gifted with reusable water bottles). Kitchens can be stocked with groceries before arrival, and the resort can arrange for an ensuite private chef. Bathrooms have rain showers, dual sinks, and full-size products (two suites have bathtubs), and all rooms have king-sized beds with luxury linens.

The food is fabulous

The lobster roll at Amara at the Goldwynn Resort in Nassau, Bahamas.

Like many other properties in Nassau, the restaurant concepts are spendy—but the food is definitely one of the highlights. OIA is the signature restaurant, open for breakfast and dinner, with Mediterranean and Asian fusion and incredible sunset views. Standout starters include grilled shishitos in an umami-rich preparation that tosses them in miso gorgonzola, bonito flakes, shoyu, sesame seeds, and honey, and heirloom tomato and burrata salad smoked tableside and served with Thai basil air.

On the raw bar menu are well-executed surprises like a cracked conch roll and chilled local stone crab claws. Sweet soy-shellacked sea bass arrives with a “mosaic” of braised leek slices, and tender grilled lamb chops arrive atop yuzu tzatziki espuma. For lunch, you can either grab a table by the water at Amara, or have your food delivered right to your lounge chair on the pool deck. The lobster roll is drizzled with brown butter with just a slather of Japanese mayo, and the crispy grouper gyro is wrapped in pita bread made in the property’s Basement Bakery. Atria is an all-day grab-and-go spot for coffees, freshly pressed juices and smoothies, pastries, and power bowls.

While the culinary options are plentiful, since there is only one option for each meal, you might want to venture off-property and switch things up if you are staying for more than a few nights. The aforementioned resort complex is literally a 10-minute walk up the beach (or 15 minutes if you don’t want to get your feet sandy.)

One swank spot for an off-property dinner is Cafe Boulud at the Rosewood Baha Mar. Like chef Daniel Boulud’s other concepts, this one is heavy on dishes from his native France—but the most interesting ones also have a touch of Bahamian influence. Thin slices of snapper and conch crudo come with crunchy watermelon cubes, Fresno pepper slices and tapioca pearls that mimic caviar, and cassava dumplings are an unexpected accompaniment to scallop and prawn Caribbean curry. Food-friendly Loire Valley wines pair with everything, and the Caribbean Sour shakes cinnamon-infused rum with lemon juice and orange vanilla syrup.

The bars will keep you jonesing for a tasty libation

Bar Paul at the Goldwynn Resort in Nassau, Bahamas.
Bar Paul is a stylish spot to kick back and enjoy a creative cocktail. Goldwynn Resort

Right next to OIA, Bar Paul shakes and stirs craft sips with classic and modern ingredients and techniques. The Top Tier Negroni shares some DNA with the Martini, with Grey Goose Citron, Riesling, lavender bitters, and Italicus, a fragrant bergamot liqueur. The Bar Paul Exclusive is a Whisky Sour on steroids, with Matsui Totori Japanese Whiskey, cherry liqueur, coconut syrup, lemon, egg white, Port, and orange bitters. Staff at OIA is eager to pair your plates with global pours. And you can also savor a well-made drink from Amara’s menu after a dip.

The namesake sip is a spa in a glass, with Hendricks gin, peach liqueur, lemon, and cucumber, topped with Prosecco, Passion Project gets its mouthwatering tang from passion fruit liqueur and muddled passionfruit, and Pink Skies is in essence a watermelon Margarita with limoncello. And don’t even think about heading back home without trying Sky Juice, the Bahamas’ answer to the Pina Colada, with gin subbed in for rum.

Spa-aaahing here is serious business

Rhizophora Spa is the resort’s newest offering, just having opened June 1, with three treatment rooms (including a couple’s suite), a nail and hair salon, and an outdoor cabana for relaxation. Treatments use local botanicals as well as Biologique Recherche products and those from VOYA, made with hand-harvested seaweed from Ireland.

During several of the body treatments, a mud mask is painted on the body before being wrapped in long strips of that seaweed, lending long-lasting hydration and elasticity before being cocooned; they can be combined with a massage, facial, or both. The spa’s director is a local aesthetician who believes in a holistic approach and is working on wellness options that focus on women’s health issues including menopause, as well as dreams’ effect on the body and mind.

An aerial view of a golf hole at the Great Waters course at Reynolds Lake Oconee in Georgia.
The incredible views from the Great Waters golf course at Reynolds Lake Oconee can only be spoiled by a really bad round of golf. Evan Schiller/Reynolds Lake Oconee

As much as we love having the opportunity to play some of the most beautiful golf courses in the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii, and beyond, the experience can be very intimidating for the average golfer. For example, when I played El Camaleon in Mexico last year, the staff had just begun preparation for the PGA’s upcoming tournament, so the mere aura of the bigger spectacle haunted me as I tried to avoid some of the course’s subtle obstacles.

What I wouldn’t have given for a few pointers from an expert on that hot but beautiful September day.

In fact, it was an especially poor performance at this Mayakoba landmark that inspired me to add golf lessons to my resort itineraries whenever it is available. And it turns out that some of my favorite properties also offer some of the best pro tips I’ve ever learned.

Reynolds Lake Oconee

Anyone who is familiar with The Kingdom knows this is beyond obvious, but until you have actually experienced the expertise from the exceptional staff here you have no idea how helpful it can be. There’s never a wrong time to visit The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee, but anyone who wants to get some pointers and play the incredible courses should be booking immediately, because the Blake Adams Kingdom Experience started as the best possible Father’s Day gift but will now run indefinitely.

This three-day masterclass in fixing your game begins with a club fitting at The Kingdom, and having just completed my first session here, I can say with certainty that this was the single most important thing I have done to get better at golf. (And the second was spending an hour working on my short game with instructor Sean Cain, which shaved at least 12 strokes off my recent round on The Oconee.)

Day 1 concludes with a round of shooting clays with Adams at the Reynolds Lake Oconee Sporting Grounds, and then Day 2 begins with fishing followed by a round of golf with the PGA pro. Finally, Day 3 will feature a morning round to hopefully put it all together before the family heads back home (or stays a few more days—no one will blame you).

PGA National Resort

Hole 3 at The Champion golf course at the PGA National resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
The Champion might be for the pros, but it shouldn’t intimidate casual golfers. PGA National Resort

My biggest fear when heading into my morning lesson with PGA National instructor Brad Robinson was that he would contradict or even undo the things I’d already been working on with my teacher back home. Fortunately, the best instructors are already in tune with this, and the first thing Brad asked was for a detailed list of what had already been addressed. Quite the relief.

For the next hour, instead of messing up my novice brain with a lot of new information, he worked on supplemental methods and exercises, allowing me to combine what my regular coach was teaching me with little things that would inevitably reinforce the routines that will take me from “Most Average Golfer on Earth” to “Not Being the Worthless Fourth on the Scramble Team.”

While I felt terrible about breaking the pool noodle, that session helped build confidence with my irons, which I later learned would be the key to my survival on The Champion. Still featuring professional touches from this year’s Honda Classic, that course was as mean as it could be to a novice like me, but fortunately my Takomo 101s and Brad’s tutelage were able to get me out of a lot of trouble that steamy South Florida afternoon.

Casa de Campo Resort and Villas

An aerial view of the Teeth of the Dog golf course at Casa de Campo Resort and Villas in the Dominican Republic.
The breathtaking views more than make up for the challenging design. Casa de Campo Resort and Villas

If you’re already planning to play the iconic Teeth of the Dog or marvelous Dye Fore courses at Casa de Campo Resort and Villas, you probably have a good idea of what you’re doing out there. Still, even the best of us needs to shed a little rust, and our scores will always benefit from time on the Trackman system. And if you are just a casual golfer enjoying a round or two in paradise, well, even a 50-minute private lesson at the Golf Learning Center is a great way to prepare for these immensely challenging designs.

What’s especially wonderful about this facility is that not only do the experts offer a variety of lessons, but they’re also comparatively affordable to instructions at your local courses. However, I have never met nor played with someone as intelligent and relatable as the pro, Parker La Pointe, who not only offered friendly, easy-to-understand advice throughout our round, but he also played more like a friend than a coach. That goes a long way in increasing the comfort level, because I have played and taken lessons from no-nonsense instructors who are more intimidating than they are helpful.

While I highly recommend the Ultimate School, which features a morning at the learning center and range before lunch and an afternoon round, no golfer can make a bad choice, even if simply opting for 50 minutes in one of the hitting bays. The pointers you’ll pick up here are way better than any souvenir in the pro shop (even though the Johnnie-O selection is astounding).

Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve

An aerial view of a golf course at Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, in Puerto Rico.
Both courses at this fantastic resort offer opportunities to appreciate the surrounding natural beauty. Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve

Perhaps we should have started with the most important question: Just how much golf do you want on your tropical vacation? If you’re planning a huge getaway that involves passports and digital entry forms, the last thing you might want is extra baggage to lug from the carousel to the resort and everywhere in between. But if you want a little bit of everything, leave the passport at home and head to Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, in Puerto Rico, where guests are spoiled with one of the best settings on the island, as well as arguably the best experiences anywhere in the Caribbean.

While the kids are having a blast on The Watermill’s awesome slides, the golfer(s) can head to the Tournament Players Club, where the East Course boasts phenomenal ocean views and the Sugarcane Course’s larger fairways will make novices feel like they’re at the top of their games. But don’t mistake forgiving designs for a pass on lessons, because the team here can deliver one of the best souvenirs from paradise: confidence.

Have multiple golfers in the crew? The semi-private lessons are great for duos that want to knock the rust off before playing 36 holes. Otherwise, a one-hour lesson is a terrific choice for the casual golfer who wants to focus on a specific element of the game, while those of us who need to get better at the whole shebang can work with the experts to develop 5- or 10-hour personalized plans. Finally, travelers who want the whole trip to be all about the game can enroll in the two-day golf school, with sessions running from 9 am through noon and including video analysis and attention to every little aspect of our games.

Silvies Valley Ranch

Silvies Valley Ranch in Oregon is home to a variety of celebrated golf courses, from challenging 18-hole designs to the world’s first reversible putting course.
The golf is, of course, a huge part of the adventure here. Silvies Valley Ranch

Some golfers can work in a training facility, watch real-time analysis on a Trackman setup, and immediately recognize changes that need to be made. Others take that advice to the course and instantly forget it and then spend 18 holes mumbling profanity and wondering why it never works. For the latter, on-course learning is a great way for us average golfers to see the changes in action, so why not choose a uniquely stunning setting that feels like it’s thousands of miles away from the rest of the world?

Silvies Valley Ranch offers way more than golf, as it the ultimate outdoor playground for adventure-loving travelers. However, the golf at this celebrated Oregon property is always front and center in the spotlight—mainly because it’s the only place where you can play with a goat as your caddy. No, not Bones Mackay. An actual goat will carry your clubs on McVeigh’s Gauntlet, a delightful (and sometimes frustrating) 7-hole challenge course, and the selfies alone are worth the trip.

As for the lessons, golf pro Dave Lewis and his crew can host individual sessions on the range or group instruction on the courses, and plenty more in between. Again, seeing the advice in action is sometimes the only way some of us can build momentum in this mind-boggling game, so having the chance to do that on courses as beautiful and celebrated as the Craddock and Hankins will make a great vacation downright phenomenal.

Orlando World Center Marriott

An aerial view of the 18th hole on the Hawk’s Landing Golf Club in Orlando, FL.
Walking off the 18th green here is always a satisfying feeling, but especially when you hit it well. Orlando World Center Marriott

When you live in or merely visit “The Golf Capital of the World,” your choices for instruction are seemingly limitless. But very few properties offer golfers the chance to get better and play a beautiful course in between visits to the best theme parks on the planet, and that’s why I always recommend Orlando World Center Marriott as arguably the friendliest Central Florida resort for families.

For starters, the brand-spanking-new waterpark is out of this world, head and shoulders above even the more luxurious resorts. As for the culinary offerings, this is a premium example of a place that has something for everyone, and even the original pool—with its own upgrades and renovations—is one of the coolest spots in all of Orlando for hanging out and enjoying a hot Florida summer day. And then there’s the golf.

Hawk’s Landing Golf Club is a fun, challenging experience for any level of player, but anyone who needs to brush up on fundamentals before teeing off can benefit from a lesson or two at the Orlando Golf Academy. Award-winning instructor Brian O’Neill and his staff excel at helping everyone from beginners to aspiring pros find their comfort zones on the course, which is a big relief to those of us with brains cluttered by years of bad lessons and terrible advice.

There’s nothing quite like experiencing the Eternal City from this luxurious property. Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel

When the 2023 Ryder Cup begins on September 29, golf fans across the world will undoubtedly take one look at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club and decide that Rome needs to be on the travel wish list. Obviously, thanks to The White Lotus and the general awesomeness of the Amalfi Coast, Italy has already been one of the hottest tourism destinations in the world over the last year, but at the very least it is about to become a haven for golfers who crave the most beautiful courses as well.

You don’t need to be a scienziato missilistico, though, to know that golf will only fill a few hours on what should be the itinerary of your dreams. That’s why Marco Simone will need to share the spotlight with a majestic property set in the heart of the Eternal City—especially one that already excels at creating an authentic, educational experience that will make guests feel like they’re in their home away from home.

That property is Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

As the Old Saying Goes

A view of Rome from a deck at Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel, in Italy.
With so much to explore and appreciate, guests likely won’t know from where to begin. Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel

If St. Ambrose had a nickel for every time someone used some form of the phrase, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do,” his descendants would never work a day in their lives. But first-time visitors probably don’t know what it is that Romans actually do, so that’s why this spectacular hotel goes the distance in offering “La Dolce Vita.”

Not only can guests experience Rome from the seats of a classic Italian automobile, but unlike the Clark Griswolds of the world, they’ll have only the best local guides explaining the importance of each sight and landmark while also serving as chauffeur. (If you haven’t seen Nick Kroll’s latest Netflix special, he has a great bit about not being able to drive stick in Italy, and it’ll only reassure your desire to sit back and let an expert do the work.)

Don’t spread out too much, though, because guests will also be joined by a private photographer, who will be capturing epic photos in front of those landmarks so they can come home in a special photo album. That’s way better than keeping it all on a memory card in your Insta360.

Make It an Imperial Affair

Come for the VIP experience and stay in a setting that redefines comfort. Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel

There’s no wrong choice when it comes to booking accommodations here, but guests who want the VIP feeling and the ability to bypass the hustle and bustle of the main lobby should join the Imperial Club. With a private floor and myriad spoils, this exclusive option is highlighted by the Imperial Rome View rooms that offer balconies with arguably the best views in the city. In fact, some might feel like the only things missing are a toga and gold laurel.

But Let’s Not Forget the Golf

What’s great about a course hosting an event as big and important as the Ryder Cup is that Marco Simone has never looked better. The fairways and greens are practically glowing ahead of September’s big showdown, and this will also be the home of the next Italian Open as well. Naturally, it’s going to be tough to get a tee time here during certain stretches.

The good news is the hotel is offering a special golf experience ahead of the huge event, so anyone bringing their clubs to Rome’s most spectacular property will have the chance to see just how well they’d hang with the world’s best. At the very least, they’ll have some spectacular selfies in front of Marco Simone castle and St. Peter’s Dome to share while the pros are handling their business.
