There’s rarely a tropical destination I have visited that doesn’t make me think, “Yeah, I could live here,” but it wasn’t until the first time I visited Mayakoba that I really meant it. Set in arguably the most beautiful area of Mexico’s Riviera Maya, this 600-acre oasis is, first and foremost, an ideal vacation choice, as each of the four spectacular resorts offers an essential travel element, from family-focused amenities to the most romantic sunsets you’ll ever witness from a private plunge pool. And don’t even get me started on the food.

Where would a dreamer live in Mayakoba, though? Well, the luckiest among us can purchase the last remaining three-bedroom luxury penthouse at Fairmont Residences Mayakoba and hope to step out onto the balcony and nod at Leonardo Di Caprio as he lounges nearby. But the clock is presumably ticking, so let’s look at what has made these units so incredibly desirable.

Listed at $2.2 million, Penthouse 12B boasts 3,200-sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor space, which means it is basically a resort within a resort community. With three bedrooms and an open floor plan, this is an exceptional choice for families that vacation several times a year or perhaps a party host with an open door, welcoming friends and loved ones for years to come.

Anyone who has visited Fairmont Residences Mayakoba knows that this property puts an emphasis on subtle luxury, as the interior design and décor plays off local culture and regional natural beauty, all while fostering a sense of serenity that we seek on sabbatical. The earthy tones flow throughout this penthouse, inspiring tranquility while also making guests wonder, “How did they come up with something this spectacular?”

The cherry on top is a private swimming pool that will provide exceptional solitude after a day spent exploring the region or playing a round or two at the iconic El Camaleón golf course. And while Penthouse 12B comes equipped with high-end appliances and a kitchen that’ll make Gordon Ramsay grin, Mayakoba offers 30 restaurants that will cover just about any occasion.

After all, a property like this will make anyone want to celebrate every day.

Orlando-based Holiday Inn Club Vacations has purchased four beachfront resorts located in Mexico, expanding its offerings outside the United States for the first time.

The four family-friendly resorts are:

The Royal Sands: Located in Cancun, the 17-acre resort has 340 two-bedroom villas, three pools and a children’s pool, four restaurants, three bars, a fitness center, spa, supervised kids club, activity center, a lagoon-side marina for sailboats and kayaks, a resort store, coffee shop and an on-site travel agency, along with beach access.

The Royal Cancun: Located on Cancun’s north shore with views out over the bay and Isla Mujeres, the 7-plus-acre resort has 201 two-bedroom villas and two pools, two full-service restaurants and two bars. It also has a fitness center, tennis courts, activity center and supervised kids club along with a travel agency, convenience store and gift shop.

The Royal Haciendas: Located in the Riviera Maya, five minutes to the north of Playa del Carmen, the 23-plus acre resort has 252 two-bedroom villas with whirlpool tubs on the private balconies and features four pools, four full-service restaurants and five bars. It also has a spa, fitness center, beauty salon, dive center, travel agency, activity center, supervised kids club, children’s pool with an aqua play area, four large whirlpool tubs on the pool deck, tennis courts and a convenience store. The resort is within walking distance of a golf course.

Grand Residences by Royal Resorts: Also located to the south of Cancun in the tranquil waterfront village of Puerto Morelos, Grand Residences by Royal Resorts offers 62 villas with two, three or four bedrooms. The spacious, elegantly furnished units have tropical hardwood furniture, state-of-the-art appliances and amenities, private terraces, spa bathrooms and jacuzzies. Some larger units even have private plunge pools and gardens. The resort features four pools, two restaurants, a beach grill and bar, pool bar, a lobby bar café, fitness center, spa, daily activities, a supervised kids club, tennis courts and a gourmet food market.

Holiday Inn Club Vacations expects it will take about a year to fully integrate the resorts, and during this process, the resorts will continue to operate normally.

Holiday Inn Club Vacations is a vacation ownership company and partner of IHG Hotels & Resorts. Once complete, IHG Hotels & Resorts customers will be able to book these properties through IHG and enjoy the benefits of IHG’s loyalty program – IHG One Rewards – including the ability to earn and redeem points for hotel stays. These properties will join IHG’s global network of 18 brands and more than 6,000 hotels globally.

“We couldn’t be more excited about this news and what it means for Holiday Inn Club Vacations, and most importantly, the families that travel with us,” said John Staten, President and Chief Executive Officer, Holiday Inn Club Vacations. “With four incredible resorts located throughout one of the fastest growing family travel destinations in the world – the scenic Mexican Caribbean – the acquisition brings an entirely new, all-inclusive experience to our owners, Club members and guests.”

Banyan Tree Mayakoba resort in Mexico is a popular luxury choice that offers seclusion and incredible amenities.
This resort is very well-known for its extravagance and luxury, but guests will also love what’s happening outside the villas and suites. Banyan Tree Mayakoba

It has just started misting on an overcast early morning at El Camaleón Golf Club, and it feels like the sky’s wringing itself out after torrential rainstorms the night before. I’m 208 yards from the green after my drive on Hole 13, and the Titleist 3-wood in my borrowed bag seems like a solid choice given my lie, so I push aside our cart’s rain curtains to grab it and step up to the ball. I’m playing with a translucent turquoise one that’s exuding colorful Mexico vibes and shows up beautifully against the carpet-like green fairways.

Taking care to complete a controlled, full shoulder turn, I watch my ball sail toward the green, stopping about 8 feet from the cup—and clapping ensues. The sound of celebration is coming from a young boy, crossing the adjacent bridge over the mangroves on his bike, who’d paused to watch what had turned out to be one of proudest shots ever. Smiling and giving him a small wave, I think to myself that this is one of those golf memories that will stick in my mind forever, as he hops back on two wheels and pedals off.

He was probably en route back to Banyan Tree Mayakoba, one of four luxury resorts (also including Rosewood, Fairmont and Andaz-branded properties) that make up the Mayakoba development near Playa del Carmen in Mexico. It’s named for the Mayan word that translates to “village over the water,” which describes it perfectly. Woven into the center of it all is El Camaleón, the Greg Norman-designed jewel that blends seamlessly into the surrounding jungle-like ecosystem.

It was the first PGA TOUR golf course in Latin America when it opened in 2006 and has hosted the annual World Wide Technology Championship every fall since 2007. Beginning in 2023, it will also host Mexico’s first LIV Golf tournament. While it’s open to the public, guests of any Mayakoba resort get priority tee times and discounted green fees.

The OHL Mayakoba Classic is one of several events hosted at the Greg Norman-designed El Camaleon golf course.
PGA stars undoubtedly love the appeal of playing in paradise, but they’re also certain to enjoy the player-friendly appeal of this course. El Camaleón

El Camaleón’s impressive Koba Club House, which overlooks the 18th hole, feels nearly like a spa, impressing with a signature scent and sleek, modern interiors from your first step inside. There’s plenty of comfortable seating for lacing up your golf shoes, a complimentary grab-and-go snack table, a full bar and a restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows upstairs—offering an expansive breakfast and lunch menu of local cuisine, from chilaquiles to enchiladas—and even a billiards table so you can practice your shot after your round. Tread downstairs to find the pro shop, which offers a nice selection of apparel and gear, as well as high-quality rental clubs. You’ll want to reserve a tee time ahead of your arrival, as the starter and his staff are (appreciatively) strict about keeping everything moving on schedule.

While many beautiful golf courses feel like they could be plunked down in any pretty corner of the world, El Camaleón provides a strong sense of place. Mayakoba is a sanctuary for more than 200 species of exotic birds, as well as many unique animals (we were lucky enough to spot two monkeys upon our arrival) that are right at home at El Camaleón. After a few holes, you get used to the blaring calls from chachalacas, scuttles of prehistoric-looking iguanas and sly scurrying of coatis, bushy-tailed native mammals similar to racoons.

El Camaleon's iconic landmark is a cenote sand trap in the middle of the fairway on hole 7.
The author showing all golfers where not to hit their Titleist ProV 1 balls. Kelsey Ogletree

On No. 7, tee off quickly so you can spend a few extra minutes checking out the fascinating cenote right in the center of the fairway. It appears it could reach down to the center of the earth (trust me: If you hit inside here, there’s no retrieving your ball), and the sound of constant water dripping softly inside is so soothing, it again reminds me of a spa. It’s easy to get caught up in watching and listening to the wildlife and taking in the scenery as you play, just the right amount of distraction to get you out of your own head to play good golf.

Hole 15 at El Camaleón golf course is one of the most beautiful on any course in the world.
Hole 15 at El Camaleón is one that golfers of all skill levels rave about—it’s certainly a sand trap of dreams. El Camaleón

Though many holes on the course are laden with fairway and greenside sand traps or border Mayakoba’s canals lined with thickets of mangroves, it’s relatively easy to score well at El Camaleón, which is just over 7,000 yards, if you can keep the ball in play. Though we appreciated our cart outfitted with GPS, the course is mostly flat and would be easy to walk on a day that’s not hot and humid. A round goes by quickly and is delightfully fun, especially hole No. 15, a short par-3 that borders the beach. I can taste the salt on my lips as I grab my ball from the cup (par!), which has me nearly ready for a celebratory cocktail.

Hole 11 at the El Camaleón golf course is another example of the amazing natural beauty here.
While the course’s natural beauty will have golfers’ jaws dropping, they shouldn’t worry too much about struggling to reach the greens. El Camaleón

After you finish out the final hole, a straight par-5 that ends right in front of the clubhouse, staff are quick to greet you with extra waters, club washing services and — my favorite — refreshing popsicles in flavors like coconut and lime. It’s a perfect segue to the 19th hole, which turns out to be a little outdoor beach bar called Deck 19 that’s serving an enticing selection of Mexican beers, snacks and of course, plenty of tequila.

An aerial view of the beach at Banyan Tree Mayakoba resort in Mexico.
This is undoubtedly one of the best destinations for golfers of all skill levels. Banyan Tree Mayakoba

While it would be easy to while away the afternoon here, it would also be a shame not to maximize time at one of Banyan Tree Mayakoba’s 34 new beachfront pool suites, unveiled in April 2021 as part of a $50 million expansion. After a quick 10-minute transport via golf cart from the course, we’re back at our home away from home. Staying—luxuriating, really—here means the most difficult decision you’ll make all day is whether to kick back in your private pool or stroll a short distance down the sand to loungers where you can order from the gorgeous new Sands Beach Club (highly recommend the Tajin-rimmed spicy margarita and pico-topped guacamole with tlayudas).

Guests also have the option to book one of seven over-the-water villas on property, which offer yet another exquisite way to stay. No matter which accommodation you book at Banyan Tree, the pillowy beds will provide a dreamy night’s rest, preparing you for another morning of teeing it up. Golf, beach, repeat: It’s the kind of day anyone could get used to.

gladden private island resort in belize
Seclusion takes on an entirely new meaning at this stunning Belize destination. Gladden Private Island

Have you ever wanted an entire island all to yourself? (Yes, please.)

It’s the reason why private-island resorts are so appealing, but then you run into other guests throughout your stay. One place you can always have to yourself—literally—is Gladden Private Island, an ultra-exclusive resort accommodating a maximum of four guests. And you certainly won’t be roughing it: the island has all the bells and whistles of a luxury resort, including a dedicated staff.

The project was spearheaded by Chris Krolow, CEO of Private Islands Inc. and executive producer and host of HGTV’s Island Hunters, and his business partner David Keener, CEO of Vision Properties. We caught up with Krolow to ask what makes Gladden stand out above the rest.

Gladden Private Island terrace and pool
Guests can kick back at poolside and wonder how they ever enjoyed a vacation anywhere else. Gladden Private Island

Q. What made you decide to open a private-island resort?
A: I’ve been selling islands for 20 years as my main job and I’ve been all over the world hosting Island Hunters on HGTV, so I’ve been very immersed in the business for a long time. I own a few private islands around the world but none were the right fit for the concept I had in mind. With Gladden, the stars aligned. I found the perfect islands to build on, and David [Keener], who I worked with on another island project that was very successful, was able to secure all the permits we needed quickly and handle the construction side.

Gladden Private Island
Only four people can stay at Gladden, which makes it ideal for romance or small family getaways. Gladden Private Island

Q: How did you choose these two islands for the resort?
A: When I saw these islands 20 miles northeast of Placencia right on the reef, I knew they were perfect. They had been on the market for a while and no one wanted them because they were so remote. They’re also too small for someone to build a large resort. But for this concept, they’re just right.

Master bedroom at Gladden Private Island
The master bedroom will make any guest feel like royalty. Gladden Private Island

Q: What makes Gladden Private Island unique?
A: Gladden is the culmination of all the good things I’ve seen, and solves all the problems I’ve seen. Ultra-private islands are awesome: the location is amazing, but they’re hard to rent out because they don’t have any level of service.

On the flipside, you’ve got all these amazing private-island resorts with impeccable service. Some of them have villas and are very exclusive, but it’s almost the anti-private island. Even if it’s a small resort and you’re only there with a few other couples, what if you don’t want to see those couples?

Master bathroom at Gladden Private Island
The design and decor used throughout this property have all the feel of luxurious resorts—just none of the other guests. Gladden Private Island

With Gladden, I had the solution: we built a single modern-Mayan-style villa for just one or two couples on the main island and housing for staff on the smaller island. The chef, manager, and concierge are a two-minute boat ride away when signaled and completely out of view the rest of the time. We even installed a “privacy meter” to indicate if you are alone or if a member of staff is visiting the island for any reason. All support structures on the smaller island are hidden from sightlines of the main house, and there are no neighbors to be seen in any direction.

Kitchen at Gladden Private Island
Guests will enjoy meals prepared by a chef, but they can also help themselves to the awesome kitchen. Gladden Private Island

Q: What’s included in the room rate?
A: At resorts, there’s always an upcharge, but we do out very best to make sure everything is included. And because we only accommodate one or two couples, our onsite concierge will reach out ahead of time to find out their preferences. We plan meals and ship in whatever we have to. We discuss privacy level: do you want the staff to be as minimal as possible or do you want someone serving daiquiris by the pool?

We also schedule any activities. If you want to go out for dinner at Hatchet Caye or one of the neighboring islands, we will arrange it. Diving is included, and our managers are PADI-certified instructors. We have a full-time massage therapist on staff, so you can have as many massages as you want.

Outdoor dining under a palapa
There are few better places for outdoor dining than under a palapa. Gladden Private Island

Q: How do you get there?
A: One of the best parts about Gladden is that it compares to Tahiti, the Seychelles, and the Maldives—but it takes half the time to get there from the U.S. and Canada. From Miami, it’s just a two-hour flight to Belize City. I leave Toronto at 9:30 a.m. and I’m on the island by lunch—and no jet lag!

Once guests arrive in Belize City, our concierge takes them from customs to the resort’s helicopter, and then it’s a 35-minute flight to Gladden. Plus, the ride flies over the Barrier Reef, one of the most amazing experiences you could imagine. And then you land on your own island with the staff is waiting with a welcome drink and a snack. After you’ve had some time to absorb everything, they come back, give you a tour and show you how things work.

rooftop terrace at gladden private island
The rooftop terrace offers 360-degree views of the surrounding water and reef. Gladden Private Island

And you’re not just tucked into some destination where you’re in the middle of nowhere. The snorkeling around Gladden is amazing. Boats don’t really go out as far as the island, and the fish don’t really know what people are, so they’re not scared and will come right to you. Other parts of Belize don’t offer that kind of experience. Plus the island is a five-minute boat ride from the Gladden Spit, where the whale sharks congregate, and 45 minutes from Placencia.

Gladden Private Island
Gladden was conceived as a short-distance alternative to epic destinations like Seychelles, the Maldives, and Bali. Gladden Private Island

Q: What will guests love most about staying on Gladden?
A: When the staff leaves the island, you’ll feel like the only people on the planet. Usually when you have that feeling, you’re camping somewhere really remote—there’s no air conditioning, Wi-Fi (that really works), or flat-screen Apple TVs.

At the end of every evening, you’re on your own. It’s such a feeling, when you see the staff light go off, the sun is going down, you’ve just had a meal prepared for you, martinis are waiting—you’re just being completely pampered. It’s pretty incredible.

Goldwynn Resort and Residences
Nassau will have a new hotspot come February 2023. Goldwynn Resort and Residences

On an island dominated by iconic resorts and beloved brand names, it will soon be the newest offering from Small Luxury Hotels that generates the biggest buzz. Introducing an element of boutique luxury to beautiful Cable Beach, Goldwynn Resort and Residences recently announced that it has begun accepting reservations for February 2023, and this property will undoubtedly be difficult to book very soon after the doors open.

The design of this low-rise resort set against Goodman’s Bay is a nostalgic nod to earlier years of tropical travel, with the mid-century modern architecture invoking a more laidback atmosphere. Guests might even feel like they’ll spot Sean Connery’s James Bond strolling through the lobby at any moment. However, everything else is still at the forefront of modern luxury, from the 81 tech-forward studios and extravagant suites to the majestic, heated infinity pool.

Every castle has a royal chamber and here it is the appropriately named three-bedroom Goldwynn Suite, which offers nearly 2,000-sq. ft. of excess and spoils, including three balconies, two terraces, and views for days. Every accommodation in this resort boasts local artwork and décor elements that celebrate the island’s rich natural beauty.

As for dining options, the signature restaurant OIA will offer a fusion of Asian and Mediterranean (MediterrAsian, if you will) cuisines that pair nicely with the resort’s incredible views, in case I haven’t mentioned those enough. Guests can also head outside to Amara, located on the infinity pool deck, for light snacks and delicious cocktails. And, for those seeking an element of seclusion, private dining is available in the poolside cabanas, which will be the ultimate aspiring influencer setting from the moment the resort says, “Now open.”

Then again, that will also be the same for just about every other square inch on this property.

It’s unbelievable how Moskito Island’s estates just keep getting better. Moskito Island

After nearly a decade of building buzz, Sir Richard Branson’s newest private Caribbean escape, Moskito Island, finally debuted three new estates last year. The Branson, Point, and Oasis concepts were praised for their stunning designs, as each accommodation was as unique from the others as it was luxurious. Spacious suites and multi-level, open-air rooms highlight these architectural marvels, and it was easy to wonder how anything would top them.

And then came The Village. One year later, Moskito Island has debuted its fourth estate, and no one—not even the namesake owner of the Branson Estate—would blame you if you declared this the best one yet. The nine-bedroom retreat sits on the western tip of this British Virgin Islands destination, and guests will be able to look out from their stylish, comfortable suites and admire the views of neighboring Virgin Gorda.

Guests will rave about the views for the rest of their lives. Moskito Island

Set on 3.5 acres, the 18,100-sq. ft. Village is a resort of its own, offering nine rooms that are matched in their splendor by the surrounding terraces and patios. Even in a large group, guests will easily find seclusion by spreading out into the living spaces for rest, relaxation, and even a movie night. Of course, every group has its leader and here that honor begets the two-story Master Suite, which was designed as a circular loop, so there is no such thing as a bad view.

The experience includes meals prepared by Moskito Island’s team of private chefs. Moskito Island

The Village is also an entertainer’s dream vacation spot. In addition to the sound-proof home movie theater, visitors will enjoy how the main house’s bar sits above the estate, acting as a playground centerpiece for families and large groups who want to cap off a stay with one epic celebration. Music and lighting are synced throughout to keep the good vibes flowing, which is essential after a long day of literally sliding from the infinity pool to another pool on the lower level, but the drawback there is having to climb the stairs to get back to the sunken bar for another round.

moskito island village aerial
The layout of The Village makes each room feel like a resort within a resort. Moskito Island

As many as 18 guests can experience the vacation of a lifetime at The Village, but between the vast array of amenities and onsite recreational options, as well as the incredible meals that will be created by the team of private chefs, there’s no way one visit will ever include every aspect of excellence offered in this estate.

Living in the third-coldest state in the U.S., Minnesotans, we presume, would be thrilled to escape the winter weather for any tropical destination. For the most impatient, freezing travelers, the options for direct flights are limited, but the places they can reach with no stops are still among our favorite Caribbean spots.

Minneapolis−Saint Paul International Airport offers direct access to the following destinations—just don’t forget to pack a jacket for when you return.

Cancun

Delta offers direct service from Minneapolis to Cancun International Airport, as does Sun Country Airlines, which will have travelers’ fingers and toes much warmer in just over four hours.

Cozumel

Sun Country Airlines also offers direct service to Cozumel, a much more laidback setting than Cancun. The flight to Cozumel International Airport last approximately four hours.

Puerto Rico

Old San Juan is calling and Delta and Sun Country Airlines are answering with the only direct flights out of MSP. The flight time is approximately five hours.

Cayman Islands

Sun Country Airlines undoubtedly made a lot of Minnesotans happy in 2018 when the company announced nonstop service to Grand Cayman’s GCM airport. When available, the flight is very affordable and lasts approximately four hours and 20 minutes.

Turks and Caicos

In 2018, Sun Country Airlines also announced new direct service to Turks and Caicos, which absolutely spoils Minnesotans since many flights to Providenciales from other major U.S. cities require connections through Miami, Atlanta, or Charlotte. These very affordable flights will have passengers at Providenciales International Airport in just under five hours.

As any avid travelers know, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is one of the biggest and busiest in the world. At any given time it might even be the busiest, which always makes for great people-watching, so long as you’re not sprinting to your connecting flight. And while we don’t love the long lines and crowded gates (sit down until your boarding group is called!), the silver lining here is always variety.

Because ATL is Delta‘s southwestern hub, it is also considered to be a gateway to the Caribbean, which means it offers more direct flights than almost any city in the United States. And, if your city has few or no nonstop options, there’s a good chance you’ll pass through ATL to get to your special paradise. The hardest choice is deciding which island to visit, so take your time and consider each destination since they’re all worthy of your vacation hours.

Aruba

Delta flies nonstop to Aruba’s Queen Beatrix International Airport at just under four hours. be sure to grab some Hot Delight papaya hot sauce before your return flight.

Bahamas

For fishing, great food, and water sports galore, few destinations do it as well as the Bahamas. Zach Stovall

Atlanta to Atlantis? It’s one of the quickest and easiest direct flights you’ll find, at just under two hours on Delta. In fact, if you close your eyes, you might even be able to hear the slot machine bells ringing through out the massive lobby at Atlantis Paradise Island. It’s better to hear them in person, though.

Cancun

This popular Mexican destination can be reached nonstop with multiple airlines. Delta is one, of course, but Frontier and Aeromexico also offer direct service from ATL, all at approximately two and a half hours.

Cayman Islands

A Grand time awaits in the Cayman Islands, especially at the famed Seven Mile Beach, which is widely regarded as one of the best in the Caribbean. Delta will have eager travelers at Owen Roberts International Airport on Grand Cayman in approximately two and a half hours.

Dominican Republic

Golden beaches, amazing golf, and luxurious resorts with fabulous amenities all await in Punta Cana and surrounding cities. Delta gets from ATL to Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) in just over three hours. Be sure to schedule transportation to the resort ahead of your arrival.

Puerto Rico

Great food and a festive atmosphere await in San Juan, where visitors can learn about the history of this beautiful city, from the buildings and culture to the places that claim to be the birthplace of the piña colada. Delta arrives at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in approximately three hours and 20 minutes.

U.S. Virgin Islands

a beach in St Croix
St. Thomas often steals the thunder in the USVI, but travelers will certainly enjoy every minute on St. Croix.

The U.S. Virgin Islands has the advantage of allowing American travelers to leave their passports behind (also a huge bonus when you forget that whole six-month renewal dilemma), so the only stress here is choosing which island to visit. St. Thomas is the most popular because of its big, beautiful resorts, but don’t sleep on St. Croix when it comes to delicious food, amazing people, and fun nightlife. Delta arrives at both Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX) in St. Croix and Cyril E. King Airport in St. Thomas in approximately three hours and 40 minutes.

St. Lucia

Considered by many travelers to be the Caribbean’s version of Hawaii, at least in terms of diverse natural beauty and romance, St. Lucia is home to resorts that are popular choices for honeymoons and anniversaries. Several airlines will get you there, but only Delta does it direct, landing at Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) in four and a half hours.

St. Maarten

St. Maarten’s beaches are just one of the many reasons the Dutch side of this island is generating buzz. Shutterstock

Just as Atlanta is a gateway to the Caribbean, St. Maarten is sort of like a gateway within a gateway, since you have to land at Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) before traveling to neighboring islands like St. Barth and Anguilla, among others. But it’s also a wonderful place to visit, offering immense diversity unlike any other Caribbean island, which is why it is known as The Culinary Capital of the Caribbean. Delta will have travelers there is approximately four hours.

Jamaica

Montego Bay has long been a favorite choice for families looking for all-ages fun and couples seeking tropical romance—it is the ultimate “does it all” destination. Delta and Frontier make it incredibly easy to get there, as a flight to Sangster International Airport (MBJ) takes less than three hours.

A quick flight on American will have Kansas Citians lounging on their favorite Cancun beaches. Shutterstock

The good news for people living in and around Kansas City is that Kansas City International Airport offers plenty of direct flights to cities all over the continental United States. Looking to spend a weekend enjoying the best of Austin’s celebrated culinary scene? There’s a flight for that. Ready to take the crew to Las Vegas for a weekend of debauchery that, of course, stays there? There’s a flight for that. Kids been begging to get down to Orlando for a few days of theme park hopping? A flight from KCI can have you there in under a few hours.

Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the Caribbean. Kansas Citians with their passports in hand have only one option for a direct flight to fun in the sun: Cancun, Mexico. That’s obviously not a bad thing, as this beloved vacation destination offers everything for every type of traveler, from amazing food and drinks to off-the-beaten-path adventure and an electric nightlife scene.

At just over three hours, American Airlines service from KCI to Cancun International Airport (CUN) is as good as it gets for Midwestern beach bums. However, if you prefer to leave the passports at home, KCI also has direct flights to the Sunshine State’s best cities, including Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Myers, and Miami.
